Aug 25, 2008 -- Freezing your credit online is a breeze for most

Experian and TransUnion now allow residents of all 50 states to freeze their credit online. With Experian, it takes about 90 seconds. With TransUnion, 3 minutes. Want to find out how to do it? Follow the bolded links on Clark's guide!

So what's going on with Equifax? Currently, only residents of 4 states -- Georgia, Iowa, New Jersey and Wyoming -- can freeze their credit online. Those are the 4 states that are required by law to allow their residents the online option. But by Nov. 1, Equifax expects to make the online option available to residents of all other states too.

Please note that while a credit freeze can help shut down economic ID theft, it will not help eliminate criminal identity theft. That's where crooks use a fake ID with your information.

In order to tackle criminal identity theft, local law enforcement will have to move to electronic fingerprinting and/or iris reading to make sure a suspect is who he or she claims to be.

Little by little, we are getting the tools we need to stop ID theft. It's only been more than a decade coming! Clark recalls that it all started with a couple named the Foleys in San Diego who founded the ID Theft Resource Center after it happened to them.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Transunion is ridiculous
I have had all 3 frozen for a year, but beware--you can't your credit report unless you left the freezes first. This went fine with Exquifax and Experian, but because Transunion has you log in to GET to the online security freeze lift, it'll automatically tell you it can't get enough info from your credit report (obviously, since there's a freeze!) to allow to proceed to the section to LIFT the freeze. Utter stupidity on their behalf.
  • Thawing credit
Good luck trying to thaw your credit. Transunion was the only credit bureau to actually send me my pin so I could thaw it. Experian allowed me to retrieve it online. Equifax...they are horrible. I thought I froze my credit-they charged me. But I never received my pin. I called to retrieve it and they claim it was never frozen (despite my $3 charge to allegedly freeze it). A natural gas company tried to access my credit to lock-in a new rate but could not and were told my credit was frozen. I have made 3 calls to Equifax, spoke with a live person each and they keep insisting my credit is NOT frozen. I have no idea what to do...I am stuck...I welcome any suggestions...HELP!

  • Easy Unfreeze for Lost Equifax PIN
As others posted below, call 888-298-0045 if you need to unfreeze your Equifax credit report and don't have the PIN. I reached an extremely helpful live person immediately.
  • equifax credit freeze
I have my equifax credit frozen but was unable to find a pin and now I am unable to unfreeze my credit in the future. The telephone number is all automated and will not do anything for me unless I have a pin number. I do not have one. How can I get this number?
  • Freezing Credit
Does freezing credit stop false reports being submitted by mortgage company damaging the credit any further.Had a credit report score of 830 or more and now learned it was at 611 yesterday
  • CREDIT FREEZE
We are using the credit freeze system to block an un-scrupulous property manager we had from obtaining new information about us. She runs “back door” credit checks on people, without their signed consent to or knowledge. She then uses this information to spy on people. This isn’t pre-screening it is “sub” screening to see what people are buying, selling, job changes etc. Its not good business, it’s illegal and she is a criminal. And we will post again, after the investigation going on into her practices brings her down!
  • Don't Freeze Your Credit
My husband and I took Clark's advice and frooze our credit. Many months later we actually sold our home and moved to another. From utilities to purchasing new appliances we were denied credit. We have had to pay numerous deposit on everything to have basic service. We have tried contacting all the credit agencies on numerous occassions and even when they say its been done, it hasn't. We are extremly frustrated and just out right angry. The time, frustration and lack of structure has made this experience a nightmare. If you decide to freeze your credit my suggestion is that you leave your spouse unfrozen. This will atleast give you the opportunity to use it when its needed. Trust me when I say it's easy to freeze and IMPOSSIBLE to unfreeze.
  • Equifax credit freeze - no pin supplied must pay to get pin
SAME problem as reported by others. Equifax online security freeze - I too had the same problem online with equifax. You get a confirmation page with no PIN number listed. Of course your credit card is billed $3. Sent 3 letters, even sent a printed screen snap of the my browser confirmation page. Each time Equifax mailed me my credit report with no letter of explanation or contact info. Spent a good deal of time weeding through the automated phone system as well. Finally just gave in and mailed the $10 check for a "request a new PIN" option. These guys are evil.
  • Experian won't lift credit freeze
I am trying to purchase an Iphone and must have the credit freeze on all 3 credit reports lifted. Transunion and Equifax lifted within 15 minutes of requests and I got a live person quickly on the phone when needed at both credit bureaus. Experian sent me confirmation of the temporary credit freeze lift but has not actually done the lift. We are now into the third day and I've tried for an hour to get a person on the phone. Experian is being extremely difficult. They need to straighten up their act!
  • Ease of completing online credit freeze
I just completed a credit freeze with all three bureaus online, and it was really easy. Transunion and Experian let you pick your own PIN, and Equifax assigns you one at random (it's embedded in the online PDF confirmation letter). Just follow the links that Clark provided, and it should be a piece of cake! Make it a great day!!
  • Unfreezing Credit Freeze Impossible
I have read the comments of other people and see that many people have had problems because they did not receive their PIN number or have lost it. I have the PIN numbers of all 3 of my credit freezes but they don't work. I froze my credit 2 years ago and cannot unfreeze it to obtain a 2nd credit card. Now I can't even get my free annual credit report. I have zero debt including a paid off mortgage and have a high paying IT job but cannot get a credit card. If I were to lose my job this could prevent a future employer from hiring me. It's amazing how many people at the credit card companies have never heard of a credit freeze. They treat me like a criminal. The credit reporting companies do not have any humans working there. What should consumers do?
  • Equifax Freeze Pin Problem
I went online on 11/6/08 to freeze my credit. (Confrimed my credit is frozen) I have the same problem as Kevin did. No Pin number. Was supposed to get the Pin # in the mail via USPS within ten days. Never came.
Anyone else? Solutions? Tried to call, but impossible to get through.
  • credit freez
Is it safe to send all the info. via US postal? such us Driver License., Date of Birth, SS#, and copy of current bill? what happens to all the copy we send in? or is it safer to do it online?
  • Online Equifax Freeze
The URL to freeze online is https://www.freeze.equifax.com. https -- not http. When I froze my account online, I was presented with a dialogue box that asked whether I wanted to display insecure items. If you choose "Yes" then the lock icon at the top of the screen disappears. If you choose "No" then it stays. So choose "No." After going through the process, I received a confirmation screen -- but no PIN. I called Equifax at 888-298-0045 and confirmed that my account was indeed frozen, but that it is their standard procedure to send the PIN via hardcopy U.S. Mail -- not to provide it online. A pain, but not as much of a pain as sending in my request via hardcopy mail. I think Equifax intentionally makes the online version difficult to find so they can sell their overpriced monthly fee services.
  • Credit Freeze - not worth the hassle
Sorry Clark, but your advice is wrong on this one. The credit unions are not technologically set up to handle this yet. Setting up my Credit freeze took some time, but it was not difficult. However, unfreezing your credit is a major hassle. I tried to lift it temporarily and all of the sites said it was lifted but my mortgage broker still couldn't pull my credit reports. As most of you already know, getting a real person to talk to you at a credit bureau is impossible. So, it shows online my credit is unfrozen when it really is not. I have tried in vain to figure out over the phone how to fix this issue. It has been 3 days now with no resolution. I'm now going to pay more $$$ to remove it permanently and see if that works.
  • Security Freeze
I could not even get verified online because, I found out later, my info is wrong. Put in Cheryl in Peril's website and cannot find it. This is a big hassle - I want to do it so I will have a pin/ID number - please help us - It should only cost $3.00 to freeze and $3. to unfreeze (GA House Bill 130) Phone calls are a hastle - no one knows what to do.
  • Equiax
The Equifax pin number is located in the text of the confirmation letter provided after your credit freeze has been processed. It took me several minutes to find it myself...

I did have a problem with Experian. They said my credit request couldn't be processed online and I would need to mail in a letter (which they provided) along with other personal documentation.

    TransUnion was a breeze!
  • Bogus site? Beware.
One of the previous comments recommended the following URL to freeze your Equifax credit:

    https://www.freeze.equifax.com/Freeze/jsp/SFF_PersonalIDInfo.jsp

However, I would be hesitant. There is no padlock to indicate the site is secure, even though it looks like an Equifax site. And the URL starts with "freeze", not Equifax. Doesn't look right.
  • Equiax - No Confirmation or PIN Number
I also didn't receive a PIN or confirmation after signing up with the Equifax freeze. The Equifax site is so unhelpful in regards to contacting them. Thankfully I stumbled across this site to obtain the 888-298-0045 phone number. Be aware that when you call this number you'll need to answer several credit related questions. If you make a mistake or "mis-match" you'll need to fax a copy of your drivers license and social security card so be prepared.
  • Eqiufax
I have been trying to get a credit report from my frozen Equifax account and it has been a nightmare. I have tried every number I could find and have ssent them the info needed via certified mail twice. I finally looked it up on your site and got the 888-298-0045 # and called it and provided them with all the info again and they are sending out a report w/in 48 hours. So as of today 1-14-2009 this is a good way to contact them if your account is frozen. Thanks to all who provided this site with the # to call!!!
  • Equifax online security freeze
Here is the website: https://www.freeze.equifax.com/Freeze/jsp/SFF_PersonalIDInfo.jsp. It's hard website to find. I just put a credit freeze on my credit report in a matter of minutes and I instantly received a pin # in a confirmation PDF file.
  • Equifax online security freeze
I too had the same problem online with equifax. Finally called 866-640-2273 and got a person who gave me the last 4 digits of the pin (big help) and this # for GA 888-298-0045 9-5 M-F
  • Equifax credit freeze
As a NC resident, I just froze my experian and transunion credit on-line quckly and easily. Equifax, however, still has only a (certified) mail option although on an August show note Clark said on-line freezes should be available from Equifax in all states by Nov 1st 2008. Now it's Jan 1st 2009! Any idea when they will get with the program?!
  • Credit Report Freeze
I froze our credit reports per Clark's recommendation. My husband and I have excellent credit.I opened a new check/savings account, the banker obviously checked my credit while I was sitting there, she got very nervous, went for help, they are both starring at the computer screen with strange looks on their faces. I asked if there was a problem. Evidently "credit denied" appeared on the screen. I explained that we had our reports froze and they understood. This also happened with a new furnace installation, and a car repair. What appears on the screen when a business now checks my credit? Not that any of these businesses needed to check my credit. I did not apply for credit from any of them. Does it say anything like "Credit Report on Freeze at request of report owner, please ask owner to unfreeze account". While the protection is much appreciated, something needs to be done to help elliminate undo embarressment. Thank you, Susan
  • Another Freeze Warning
I had no trouble with Experian and Transunion setting the freeze and getting a Pin Online. However, Equifax's online application went bonkers and I never got a pin number or at least some step was missed. Now I have a frozen credit account but no PIN. Since there is no telephone number to contact them I did write them a letter as their website indicates. So far it has been a month and a half and no response. Who governs these clowns anyway!
  • Freeze Warning
It is true, freezing your credit is fast and easy. But beware, UNfreezing your credit requires you to type in your PIN number. The PIN number is sent to you in the mail, and if you have unknowingly discarded, accidentally misfiled or misplaced this important piece of paper, Experian and Equifax offers no person-to-person contact numbers. Both will require you to compile and send documentation through the US Mail. Crippling if credit is needed in a hurry. DO NOT LOSE YOUR PIN NUMBER.
  • Credit freeze
I had no problems placing credit freezes online with Experian & Transunion. Equifax has been a nuisance. Of course, I had to send them letters requesting credit freezes on our accounts as we're in California. Then, they apparently placed the freezes but never bothering sending us out confirmations or PINs. I called in after a couple of months and was thoroughly grilled on the phone to prove my identity (having to provide information re: current account balances on a few credit cards). A few weeks after my phone call, I received a PIN. My husband called in, and a month after his call, still doesn't have a PIN. He's going to have to call them a second time for the grilling (they won't let me call for him). Equifax really doesn't have their act together.
  • Credit Freeze Removal
Generally I think that placing a credit freeze on credit reports is a good idea. That part can prove relatively easy. It is the removal of the credit freeze that can be a nightmare. It can take several days. I am in the processing of changing gas marketers and I lost out on one deal because I needed a 10-digit pin that only Equifax had. It took them a few days to send it to me. I think looked into another gas marketer who uses another credit reporting agency and I am now waiting for them to send me another 10-digit pin so that the gas marketer can access my credit report and I can get a good natural gas rate. I almost regret ever putting the freeze on my credit report, but my ID has been compromised. I think that the credit reporting agencies should allow us to create our own PIN# when we initially put the freeze on.
  • Credit Freeze-Georgia
Just went online and froze w/ all 3 agencies...went perfect! TU was free, the other 2 charged me $3.00 each. Thanks for the info Clark!
  • TransUnion Security freeze
I just painlessly added a security freeze to my TransUnion account on-line. It did not cost anything, as indicated in the following comment on the website:
    Online:
At this time, you may process your Security Freeze request online, free of charge.
  • Temp remove freeze
We recently bought a home and trying to get a loan was a real REAL pain. It was a nightmare trying to remove the freeze temporarily so my loan officer could get my credit scores - ended up costing me and my husband $80, and ALOT of time.
  • Freezing your credit online
As a GA resident,I CALLED each of them around 10 am the morning after the law went into effect on 1 Aug for FREE freezes for all in GA over 65 years old.
No problem with Transunion or Experian but had to ask for a supervisor at Equifax after initially getting the idiot treatment and a DENIAL of any FREE freezes for anyone. I explained the GA law to the supervisor and again was told no free freezes regardless of your age. I asked her for her name and badge number ( I already had the first person's name) and and her location and again gently explained the free for 65 year old law and read her the letter I had received from some office in Atlanta during early Jul explaining the law change again. I told her if she didn't act on my request as required by the new GA law, that I would file a law suit within 24 hours against Equifax, the first employee, and her personally and ask the court for Class Action status against Equifax. She asked me to hold and returned in about 5 or 6 minutes and said she had confirmed the GA law change and had put a FREE freeze on my credit and gave me a pin number and instructions on how to clear the freeze and how to restore it and said a letter would be sent within 5 business days explaining all. I did in fact get similar letters from all three agencies. .
  • freeze
do you have to freeze all 3?
  • credit report
Had no trouble this time getting Trans Union and Experian (three month ago were terrible) credit reports- this time Equifax was terrible about pin and try to sell me something - now have to call them. These credit companies should have to pay us to use our information.
  • Credit Freeze Pin Number
Hey Clark! I am writing to give you a little insight into something i am noticing with the credit freeze pin number. I am a mortgage broker (not one of the evil ones...) and when sending a loan into underwriting i noticed an option for when a person freezes their credit. I called and asked the customer-no service dept (i am their customer after all) and the fella didnt have a clue what i was talking about. I asked him to get me to someone who did...after a sigh, haha, he put me on hold for 10 minutes...
Long story short, he ended up telling me tthat if a customer didnt give me the pin number so that i could enter it in, then there was nothing they could do to help my client.
Now, i know better than that, but the point is there are people in my industry who do not and will be gathering up pin numbers for mortgage loans, thereby defeating the whole purpose of the freezing process to begin with.
Anyway, i thought i would mention this and can definitely provide you with the 800 number to investigate this yourself. I thought it was interesting.

    Thanks!
  • Credit Freeze
Had no problems with Experion or Equifax but transunion kept kicking me out saying they could not verify
  • Credit freeze update
Finally was successful in placing online freeze with Transunion this morning.
  • Credit freeze
I'm a GA resident also and am having the same problem with TransUnion online as Jim below. Over and over I get message that they can't verify my state.
  • Trans Union games
Trans Union requires I list all my accounts to establish identity to freeze my accounts. They are harrassing people with these tactics and delaying the freezing of reports.
  • Transunion
for weeks now TU hasnt allowed me to freeze my credit online, I live in GA and it keeps telling me they can't verify
  • Credit Freeze
I live in Ohio but was able to set a freeze via TransUnion for free and thru Experian for $5. Equifax would allow a temporary online freeze for $5 for non-temporary for free via regular mail. This does not exactly match the details in Clark's guide.
  • EXPERIAN credit freeze
As the Stone sang: "You don't always get what you want..." I filed [and paid for] a freeze online last week. Today I got what I assumed to be the password to unfreeze, BUT the letter inside the envelope told me they were removing me from the lists they sell for 5 years, with instruction on how to remove y name permanently, something I'd done years ago. Nothing said about the freeze. Be cautious, "TRUST BUT VERIFY".
  • Credit Freeze
Had to call Equifax to get PIN after placing freeze. No problems with Experian. Transunion - keep getting message that online freeze temporarily not available.
  • Be careful what you wish for
    Clark Howard said:
"In order to tackle criminal identity theft, local law enforcement will have to move to electronic fingerprinting and/or iris reading to make sure a suspect is who he or she claims to be."

Actually a digital watermark on a state issued ID would work as well and still protect our 4th ammendment
  • Great Figures Equifax would be the last
I just froze my report with Experian and Transunion was a piece of cake. Can't wait until Nov for Equifax.
  • Credit Freeze
Equifax stated only for five yrs. Transunion sent a three page letter trying to talk me out of doing it and buying there $11.95mo credit monitoring plan. Experian no problem.
