Aug 22, 2008 -- California's ban on home-schooling overturned

Several months ago, Clark got very upset when California outlawed homeschooling. Thankfully, however, that decision has been overturned on appeal. As goes the Golden State, so goes the nation, right?

Some 2 million children are home-schooled in our country. The first cousin of Clark's wife -- a former teacher named Courtney -- home-schools her 5 children!

Interestingly, the California court initially ruled that only former teachers would be allowed to home-school. Yet a restriction like that ignores those of us who have the ability to educate one-on-one.

Long ago, Clark worked for a group called Literacy Action that taught non-reading adults how to read. They did it with volunteers who offered one-on-one tutoring to help adults achieve functional literacy. That's where Clark learned the power of one individual working with another.

Parents should have the right to work one-on-one with their children too. Some folks in public education think home-schooled kids are just a bunch of truants. But Clark believes that to be the exception rather than the rule.

To remain competitive internationally, we need to use every tool available to us in the educational world -- be it vouchers, charter schools or school choice.

Clark is particularly excited about what's going on in Finland. In their public schools, teachers are like independent entrepreneurs; there is no centralized curriculum. No "Soviet style" monopoly education like we have here in the United States.

The result of Finland's vision? They have the highest level of education achievement in the world, while spending a relatively paltry sum per child.

Think this discussion doesn't affect you because you don't have kids? Huge amount of your taxes are still spent to support schools that are failures.

  • First hand homeschoolers
As a homeschooling family, we can attest to the fact that our children are well educated. I would put them up against any public school kid. We voluntarily test our children (using the same standardized test the PS use) and our kids are always in the 90th percentile. Additionally we are able to offer classes that PS kids wouldn't even dream of taking- Latin, chemistry, The American Constitution, Astromomy, Algebra, Biology, Poetry, etc. Everyone wants to point a finger at homeschoolers for the few fringe knuckleheads that abuse the system and bring everyone down. Most people that homeschool are doing it for one reason- giving our children the best education we can offer them. The failing PS systems have only one option to fix it- throw more money at it. When are all of the union card carrying liberals going to wake up and realize that the kids who are not getting a decent education now will be the ones paying their Social Security and caring for them in the rest homes later in life? We as Americans are failing our children so the unions (NEA) can ensure themselves a job dispite what is really good for the kids. If everyone were less selfish and woke up and truly saw how they are failing their children, always going out seeking to get them more "stuff" instead of arming them for their future, then everyone would seek to homeschool. How often are the winners of the National Spelling Bee, National Geography Bee, etc homeschooled children? Many times they are. Considering that oly 1-2% of kids are HS, that's a great testament to how good homeschooling works.
  • Home Schooling
Right on Clark! While home schooling is not for everyone, it is ideal for many families. For those who want home schoolers to be tested to see if they're keeping up, who would do the testing? The same people who are failing in our public shcools? I've always believed that traditional schools should use the model being used in Finland. If the Fin's could watch the movie, "The Freedom Writers", they would be shocked at our school system.
  • home schooling
There needs to be better accountabilty for home schoolers. While I have a few friends that have done a wonderful job home schooling, I've had many more who homeschool to have a flexible schedule. Too often, schooling is secondary. I was all for having to have home school teachers possess a teaching degree or in the process of receiving one.
  • schooling: US vs. Finland
Finland is a relatively small country with a homogeneous population - comparison with the US system involves many variables.
  • Home Schooling
I think home schooling can be wonderful depending on the parents. Here in KY there are some families that "home school" but I wonder how much education the children are really getting. I think as long as there is some type of testing that home schooled kids can take to make sure they're keeping up or not falling behind of regular school kids then I'm all for it.
