Aug 18, 2008 -- Google's street view function lets you vet houses, 'hoods

Google has launched an interesting service that could be a real boon to house hunters and celebrity star gazers. Their "street view" function (be sure to click the street view tab) allows you to type in a street address and see high-quality pictures of houses and whole neighborhoods. You can even "walk" or "drive" up a street by using the mouse to scroll around!

Talk about a testimony to Google's immense wealth. They're sending photographers all over the country to take digital photos of every house, and then they're marrying it to the existing Google maps technology.

Not every street is mapped as of yet. Once you type in an address, you know it is mapped if a thumbnail image of the property pops up.

Think about the value of this service in the real estate world: You can get the inside scoop on a house and see real pictures -- not the staged ones you may see at an agent's site.

Remember when people would buy a map of the stars' homes in Los Angeles and spend the day driving around looking at their residences? Now you don't have to go to L.A. to gawk at the homes of the famous and near-famous. You can do it from the comfort of your living room using ZabaSearch.com to determine street addresses and this new Google Maps function to actually see them!

  • Street View can be deceiving......
The street view shot of my house is really terrible. Taken in the dead of winter when everything looks, well, dead. Wish they had come during the spring when my lawn is kickin'! Now I'm trying to sell and some of the listing web sites include the Street View shot. That isn't helping me sell the house. Who do I contact to get a better shot taken and posted (LOL)!
  • Teacher ??????
Are you really a public school teacher? What makes you think they would be interested in seeing your house. You really have to relax maybe you are not in the right profession.Good job google I use it to show my 9 year old the neighborhood I grew up in where my friends lived where I went to school, where I played. Lets get rid of telephone books and 411. Teacher grow up I hope your fears are not taught to your students.
  • Murder by Google?! coconspirators with criminals!
The house I have doesn't be able to be seen from the highway since I've got a gravel drive farther from a main rd. But if was able I would be ALARMED. I sympathize and I find this to be ridiculous. There are many stalkers out and this only helps them!!! Knowing the layout of the land be how to plan to setup someone for becoming target of violence by manner of doing something from the highway that they don't get the chance to do by driving and or seeming suspicious and being stopped and asked what they're up to. They weren't able to before and criminals are becoming worse now. Even captures the vehicles models and the package of neighbors house layout and trees to plan to kill someone. Gives more interest to focus on killing someone. Enables the obsession of someone. So sick. Don't even get me started.
    I am appalled by Google's unprofessional-ism.
  • Google "Street View"
The satellite view has to be about 6-7 years old. The neighborhood is just being developed in that photo and my house is about 6 years old.
  • street view for Santa Rosa CA
    did not work
  • Google Street View
Pretty cool stuff but not very up to date, image seems to be 1 year old +/-.
  • Google "Street View"
When I looked for my address, I was shocked to find my picture in front of my house. I think that a snapshot of the property is a good idea but including personal pictures is an invasion of privacy. What kind of message are they trying to infer about our neighborhood? What can I do about this?
  • ZabaSearch.com
I am very upset as I was interested in this site. I wewnt to your link and check it out and cecided I did not want it. X'd it off and now I cannot get rid of it. I can't even get my home page up - it comes up all the time instead of home page. Tried to email them but no luck. Have rebooted several times and no luck. Please let me know if you know how to get rid of it and warn your other subscribers. Thenks
  • @ Dick: Google is different
    Hi Dick-
Actually, the Google "street view" is different from zillow. Zillow only offers a satellite/overhead view (which Google has also offered for years.) What Clark is describing is the "street view", which gives an actual photo from on the road, not above the road. It allows you to virtually "drive" the street, exactly as you'd see it in real life.
  • Clark - bad info
To all - this capability existed with zillow.com for over a year before Google, as usual, stole the idea - oops - I mean copied the idea.....Google is not necessarily the innovator but the best at copying.....

And to all - I think Zillow was the first
  • Travel Health Insurance
I am going to Beijing to the Paralympics and I am considering trip health insurance. What do you suggest
  • Neighborhood search
Even http://maps.live.com/ shows my address at the wrong house, but it's only one block off.
  • Google "street view"
How is it that there are never any actualy people in the "street views?" For privacy sake, does google have to "delete" them>
  • Googlemaps
I think that this website is a neccessity for anyone who has to drive for business or pleasure.
  • Google Street View
Google has the incorrect house listed for my home address. Everyone on the street is mislabeled! Someone did a sloppy job!
  • Microsoft NOT better
Mike P - I tried the link you posted. Overall clarity is better, but pictures are not nearly as zoomed in as Google. Only gets down to about the block-at-a-time level, and no straight-on views, only aerial.
  • I think Microsoft is better
Go to the neighborhood of your choice using this site:

    http://maps.live.com/

Then click on "Bird's eye" if it's available. Much better than Google.
  • 5302 Canterbury Dr. San Diego, Ca.92116
    Picture please.
  • accuracy of the street view?
I am a real estate agent in the St. Lousi area, and think the street view is a great tool for checking out the neighborhood, and even specific block you are interested in. But the system seems to be pretty inaccurate when it comes to showing specific homes/addresses. It's been up to 3 blocks off, and if you dont' know exactly what the house looks like already, you wouldn't necessarily know that. Great tool for more general searches at this point though, hope they can work out the glitches!
  • Web house search
This is great. Now my ladies can find me. This is better than a map.
  • Google map
They are over three [3] years old.
  • anyone/anytime
I agree with 'unjustified fear'. Its very naive to think that anyone anywhere can not already see where you live? There are so many ways. You would need a cloaking device to prevent this.
  • What about Washington, DC area
Love the new function but the locations for street view are very limiited. Cannot believe that Wash,DC nor the surrounding Va or Md suburbs are not covered...boo hiss on Google. Goodness gracious.
  • Google Street View
There was no "street view tab" when I clicked on the link. Nor was there anything about street views.
  • unjustifed fear
To the school teacher that is worried. If they have your address to look at your house THEY ALREADY KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE.
  • Public domain
For you people who think this is an invasion of privacy - it's no different than someone standing in front of your house (out in the street) and looking at or taking a picture of your house. It's not illegal and the government doens't need to get involved!
  • Home Online
I do not like this function. I think the government should draw the line somewhere with people being able to have access to viewing your home. It is a little crazy to me.
  • Not just in the US
I live in Japan and you can even see "street view" in this country...It's great and I love it!

However, I can appreciate peoples paranaia...One doesn't need a vivid imagination to be able to see the potential negative use of this technology...
  • Not Live
My neighborhood has been on this for well over a year and a half. This is not a live feed but a still picture. In fact the shot of my house shows my Cherokee in the driveway. I sold this vehicle over a year ago.
  • Why so paranoid?
I hate big brother intrusion as much as the next guy, but get real. These are pictures taken from PUBLIC STREETS. To see your house on Google someone would need your address. If they have your address they can drive to your house anyway. As far as terrorists go, should we ban the publication of any and all pictures taken from public streets of houses or buildings? This just seems to be the exact type of paranoia that terrorists try and create. All Google is doing is providing a map with pictures. Any images shown the average person can go out and obtain themself.
  • Street/House Vies
I think this is absolutely terrible. Doesn't Google remember we are in a world where terrorists exist? Only military/national security folks should be able to see this kind of stuff. I am completly baffled. Uncle Sam neetds to stop this grave error.
  • No good
Oh great. Thanks Google for making terrorists and stalkers job that much easier.
  • I think it's creepy that people can see my house. However, it's a still photo, not a living camera. I have used it to find a building that I had to go to in downtown Atlanta. I knew what the building and street looked like before I got there. That was great.
  • public access via internet to my house
As a public school teacher, I do NOT like the fact that kids can see and find my house. IT IS DANGEROUS!
  • This has been around for months. I used it back in May while shopping for a house.
