Aug 15, 2008 -- Wealthiest Americans starting to cut back

The Financial Times of London reports that over 80% of the wealthiest Americans have begun looking closely at their budgets and seeing what they can cut out. The business for "mys" -- as in, "my therapist," "my personal trainer," "my personal chef," etc. -- has been taking it very hard.

Likewise, over 80% of the wealthiest also said they passed up buying something right now until it went on sale. Over 50% report not buying a big-ticket item that they were planning to purchase.

So why should you care what the wealthiest Americans do or don't do? Simply put, the ripple effect of their spending is significant. It can actually lead to a further slowdown of the economy.

On the other end of the financial spectrum, Aldi is about to open its 1,000th store in the United States. Aldi typically stocks 1,500 items -- instead of the nearly 40,000 carried by a traditional grocery store. That allows them to keep costs low and pass the savings on to consumers.

It's been said that Aldi is the only retailer that Wal-Mart fears. In fact, Wal-Mart is poised to open a wave of small grocery stores to compete with Aldi. The real winners of this battle will be consumers as the 2 try to undercut each other in price.

  • NYC Hotel prices
Clark commented on his Friday show last week that he had a NYC hotel for under $100 per night in Sept. Can you advise the hotel name or web site where he found it? Many thanks. clarklc@bellsouth.net
  • I don't see the point in over-spending just because you can. It is pointless. We have always shopped at Aldi since they opened their stores in Ga. & Clark announced their coming. So I guess you would say we have not really cut back since we are penny pinchers anyway. We really don't miss out on anything spectacular by being this way. The only upset are gas prices. They stink for sure & it means less money in the bank. In the community >>> near <<< where I live they have the highest income to debt ratio...credit card debt... in any other community in the united states alone! Unbelievable, I am just glad I live 5 miles down the road and don't care for any part of that.
  • Cutting back
I guess I'm classed as one of the wealthiest nowadays due to my income, but we aren't even millionaires. But we've cut back. No more personal trainer. No more massage twice a month. Eating out far less. My cutbacks impact specific, local businesses and entrepreneurs. It feels mean to tell them I'll no longer have a standing appointment. We're subscribed a local CSA farm and patronizing the farmers markets instead of dining out. It's not easy for the trainers and massage therapists to replace regular customers.
