Aug 15, 2008 -- Using residential fake grass to conserve water
Clark is excited by the idea of installing fake grass for the purpose of conserving water. Today's fake grass is a far cry from the AstroTurf of yesteryear. In fact, you can't tell today's fake grass isn't the real deal; manufacturers even weave in some decoy weeds!
In Las Vegas, homeowners are actually paid to dig up their yards and convert them to desertscape. The stunner is that the Las Vegas Strip only uses 3% of the city's water. That's because casino owners are good capitalists and have used every possible water-saving technique in their buildings.
The Los Angeles Times now reports that California is offering a similar deal. Golden State homeowners are being encouraged to convert to landscaping that requires less water. But some local municipalities are fining homeowners when they make the switch. Talk about state and local governments working at cross purposes!
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying
synthetic turf
I work in the synthetic turf business for IntelliTurf here in Atlanta and I can provide countless independent studies where authorities have found no leaching of harmful chemicals including lead. Some of the concerns were with the infill that was being used and we use natural sand. Also, this is not a low budget item but a lawn will pay for itself after 4-5 years when considering watering, chemicals, and mowing. Also, you have to think that you are putting down a product outside that has an 8-10yr lifespan so it must be manufactured and installed to the highest standards.
Fake Grass
A qoute re: the CPSC from Clark Howard's 2/25/2008 entry: "CPSC honcho Nancy Nord instead sees her job as protecting manufacturers who have unsafe products on the market." I suggest you read the whole entry plus all the others re: the CPSC.
Fake Grass
Hi Ted, Great that you are researching. Consider your sources. The CPSC's track record for siding with the desires of industry over the health of the consumers leaves a lot to be desired.
Artificial grass
J,I found the complete opposite regarding artificial grass. "CPSC staff evaluation showed that newer fields had no lead or generally had the lowest lead levels. Although small amounts of lead were detected on the surface of some older fields, none of these tested fields released amounts of lead that would be harmful to children." http://www.cpsc.gov/volstd/proposals/artificialturf.pdf
Fake Grass Is Great!
I think using a fake plant or grass is do-able if done right. We live in an apartment, where we are expected to pay for water with our unit. Fake plants, hide the view into our unit, don't cost us anything after our origonal costs, if they get don't die.
Fake Grass
Be careful before you install fake grass. It releases lead and other toxic chemicals directly on the children and pets that play on it (you've heard of the lead in plastics right). In fact, despite the coniderable expense, States like New Jersey, New York and Connecticut have closed fields with astrotruf. New Jersey State epidemiologist and deputy commissioner Dr. Eddy Bresnitz reiterated the NJDHSS's position that field owners should consider limiting access to synthetic turf fields that contain elevated levels of lead, that field operators should water the turf before and after use to limit dust, and that field users should wash their hands and bathe after playing, and remove clothes inside out and wash them separately.
Las Vegas Strip Water
Most casinos on the strip have their own access to and/or rights to water. Also, casinos south of Sahara Ave. are not in the city of Las Vegas, but rather are within Clark County.
Fake Grass
Would like to have more info on this subject. Interesting.
Fake Grass..Real Money
Clark, have you priced this product per sq. ft.? It is not very middle budget available. Yes, it looks nice but boy is it a budget buster.
fake grass
The problem is that there are many utilitarian purposes that grass provides, such as cooling the air, filtering, erosion control, etc.
fake grass
Great idea. How can I get more info on fake grass.
