Aug 08, 2008 -- Inexpensive laptops for the back-to-school season

Back-to-school sales offer a great opportunity to pick up a computer. These sales typically start on July 5 and continue on through early September.

If your idea of a back-to-school sale involves clothing, pencils, pens, and notebooks...well, today the "notebooks" are more likely to refer to a notebook computer than to the kind you write in!

Promo pricing makes this an especially good time to buy a laptop. The price point is still around $399 as it was last summer, but what you get for that price has improved greatly since last year. In addition, you typically won't have to jump through hoops for a rebate just to get a price of around $399.

Beware that Macs, however, are still just as pricey as ever -- including the very popular MacBook Air.

This year, the choices are more confusing in the PC world. You can either get a full-size 15-inch laptop or a mini-laptop that weighs about 2 pounds with a 9-inch screen.

The mini-laptops should go for between $400 and $600. Asus, Dell, HP, Acer and Everex all make their own versions.

Whatever you do, don't let the salespeople con you into buying an expensive laptop for $1,000 or more -- unless you're looking for a Mac. You can get all the functionality you're likely to want at around $399.

What others are saying

  • Laptops be safe
Backstopp enables organizations and individuals to perform a remote deletion of data files on any lost or stolen PC, Laptop, PDA or Mobile phone utilizing either the GSM (mobile) network, Internet or RFID.
  • Best Cell Phone Service Reply
Im sure you will recieve many different responses to this question heres my opinion. With any cell phone carrier there will be few certain spots where you may not tecieve a signal. This is normal. If you search not biased sites on google for largest network coverage suprisingly Sprint has the most coverage in Square Miles. If you look at thier rates they are also cheaper than any other company. They also have the fastest Data network (yes even faster than the 3G Iphone). The downside, They have been known for years for poor customer service, but if you check out the latest earnings release you will see they are making great improvements in that area.
Everyone has heard horror stories from people who have racked up thousands on a monthly cell phone bill. I actually know someone who takes those calls and negotiates payment plans. They offer $99 for unlimited EVERYTHING. GPS, text, internet, minutes, you name it. I would strongly suggest checking them out. Thanks

  • laptop vs. mini-laptop
what is the difference between $399 for a laptop and $400 for a mini-laptop?
  • Laptop deals to be found!
$499 + tax buys you a 15.4" Dell Dual Core Pentium 1.86GHZ Inspiron 1525 w/ 160G HD, 2G RAM, CD/DVD RD/WR, Window Home Premium etc., at Best Buy (this week its back to $649...keep your eyes out for a few more deals before school starts!
  • Incomplete Report, Clark!!
Clark, when you tell us there are $399 laptops, you must have seen them advertised. Why don't you share with us WHERE we can find these deals you speak of!? Going soft on us?
  • laptops
Would this have enough memory for a student?
  • Laptop
I bought a Dell Vostro 1500 for 599. Very happy with what I got. The support peopleat Dell were great also. We have a desk top Dell Dimension 2100--very happy with that also.
  • Computer Nerds
People that know they need more than a $399 computer -COMPUTER NERDS- (myself being one) should buy a more expensive computer. If you don't know you need it, it will probably be enough for you. Add a gig of ram for 30 bucks and you are good to surf, excel, watch dvd's, and listen to music. A $1500 laptop will lose $399 in value after you open the box.
  • laptop at $399
Remember people: To Clark's audience heavy computing is taking out “red-eye” in a photograph. They mostly surf the web, type a letter to Aunt Milly or put a few numbers into a spreadsheet. For this, a $399 laptop is fine. No one who is a “road warrior” or “power user” is going to buy a $399 laptop, they know better.

THANKS FOR DOING A GOOD JOB
I LISTEN TO YOU ON-LINE HERE IN SAN JOSE CALIFORNIA
  • You get what you pay for???
I saw the comment down the page named "You get what you pay for" Most of the Laptops do come with 120-180 Gig hard drives. Is that not enough??? And they do only come with 1 gig of ram, but you can buy 1 gig for $30 on sale. And if you can work a screwdriver you can install it. So you can easily upgrade to 2 gigs of ram for $60. $399 + $60 = $459, NOT $1000
  • Best Deals
Every Sunday Best Buy has a cheap laptop in their ad around 400-450. The sales people are taught to ask you questions and up sell you to a more expensive laptops, the old bait and switch. Ask for the $399 laptop and dont let them talk you into anything else.
  • $399 laptop is here !!
Micro Center is selling the Acer Aspire one with Intel Atom : 1G RAM, 80GB hard drive, Windows XP. This weighs about 2 lb !!!. Sorry no CD/DVD due to size. I just got 1 a few days ago - so far loving it

  • Macs
Actually, MacBooks can be had for <$1,000 on the Apple refurb site. After you get to the store page the link is on the lower left corner of the page.
  • Laptops-R-Us!!
You're not kidding about laptop prices being all over the place. Just got one (pretty well equipped) last week at B-buy that I thought was a steal at $729.00. Same one this week... $549.00. Good news is that such a short time passed, they credited me the difference. Score pts. for the big box!!
  • you can get a $299 laptop
you can get an ultra portable $299 laptop for doing basic things such as wifi and writing reports (search newegg.com asus eepc brand) etc.. but if you want to do more then spend an extra $200 and get more choices like playing music and games.
  • People I know and Appla
"Trendy, not good for business, higher cost, etc." The few people I know who have gone with Apple over the past few years tell me - without exception - they are happy that they made the move.

After making many friends in India (why get angry?) thanks to Dell and HP, I'm going to pay the difference for a(hopefully) more secure and more reliable computer.

MS Vista and their new Office Suite was the final straw for me. I got some "PC to Apple" books from the library. Doesn't look too difficult. Wish me luck.
  • You get what you pay for - You should know this, Clark!!
Laptops priced below $500 or so barely meet the minimum requirements to run the operating system, and DO NOT have enough computing power to run resource hungry applications. The $399 price just gets you in the door, then you'll have to spent AT LEAST $1000-$1500 to get the hardware you need to run all the latest software.
  • laptop for $399 ?
i've been shopping for a laptop for $399 and have not found any at the usual places(best buy, staples, etc.)where are those deals Clark? phil
  • Apple vs PC
    Nora:

(as noted above, Clark doesn't read this board or answer questions)

Some comments on the Apple versus the PC

Is the Apple worth the money? Not in my opinion. It clearly costs more. What matters is what the computer is needed for. The Apple is good for folks in more creative fields. For those in business or engineering, a PC-based system is much better.

Is the Apple better? Well, as I said above, it depends on what you need it for. Some (like your daughter's dad) will say that the Apple is better. I agree, it is a good computer, but it may not be what she needs, and may not be worth the money. If she doesn't need the Apple, and if you don't have money to burn, I'd suggest a PC-based system like the Dell or an HP.

If the system bought in 2004 is getting slow, it may be one of several things. Perhaps too much stuff downloaded, filling the hard drive, or too many programs downloaded. Or...perhaps she picked up a computer virus.
  • lap top computers
My granddaughter's Dell (2004) is getting slow, etc. It is being checked out as I write this. The man working on it suggests buying an HP if necessary. Says the Apples are very trendy and not worth the money. He also states parts are sometimes difficult to find as are repairers should something go wrong. She is a senior full ride softball player at KU in Lawrence, Ks. Her dad says the Apple far surpasses HP and any other lap top. What is your opinion or can you recommend someone who is very knowledgeable on this matter.
  • $399
I found a $399 computer at dell. It has only 1/2 gig memory. I don't believe I'd want to run XP on that much ram much less Vista. Upgrade to 1gig at least, but still they had one for $499.
