Aug 05, 2008 -- Prepare for increased winter heating costs

This winter heating season is set to be an ugly one for your wallet. Those who use oil to heat their homes will be hardest hit. Oil customers are looking at prices that could be 80% higher than last year! To compound the problem, many folks who use oil are located in the Northeast -- where winters typically last longer.

Now is the time to weatherize your home before the cold comes by weather-stripping doors and windows, insulating your attic, etc. Some people may even want to consider using a wood-burning stove if that's an option.

Natural gas customers, meanwhile, can expect costs to be 15% higher than they were last winter. The good news is that new discoveries of natural gas deposits should lower the price down the road.

There's also been some discussion of liquefied natural gas coming in great supply. The main impediment is the "not in my backyard" mentality. Many Americans don't want more refineries built. But the danger of a NIMBY mentality is that we become prisoners to energy-rich foreign powers.

Clark thinks the ultimate answer lies with alternative energy and conservation.

Isn't it interesting that it looks like lower energy costs will becoming in time for the election? How will that play out? For his money, Clark believes both Obama and McCain are more similar than they are different on energy.

What others are saying

  • Free heat machine
I have 5 acres of wooded land with lots of fallen trees. 3000+ sq foot house
have you heard anything about the free heat machine? Outdoor wood furnaces seem to be a good idea rather than pay over $600 a month for propane heat.
  • wood stoves rule
Wood stoves rule. They had best try and outlaw them either or I'll bite someone's cheeks out. I had prior thought natural gas was the best solution. I understand that gets expensive as well as oil drums. The solution to staying warm obviously be plan to move to rural area stock up on a wood or corn cob burning stove. I would rather have less convenient surroundings and have difficulty at a post office or something with the delivery of stuff as long as there were ordinances to remove someone wood stove or fire pits of where someone spends the majority of their time or a home.

[[Furthermore: Just say no to the elite. Shopping at Walmart only helps slavery. Jesus would not shop there. I am pagan and I would not shop there.]]
  • solar power
Is there a cheaper way to do the solar power thing? Is there a government program other than tax credits? when does it look like the cost will come down? I think the cost to outfit the average home is over 50k.
  • electric heaters
Do you know anything about the electric heaters that Paul Harvey has been advertising?

  • OBAMA- McCAIN
CLARK WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN.OBAMA WANTS ALTERNATIVE THATS IT McCAIN WANT IT ALL.DRILL-NUKE-ALTERNATIVE-CONSERVE.
THAT'S WHAT AMERICA NEEDS TO LOWER PRICE
  • Wood Stove
I use a wood stove (EPA approved for low emissions)to provide most of the heat for my 2,300+ square foot home. There is some effort required (but not that much)to keep the house clean, and you usually have to convince your home owners insurance agent that the unit is properly installed. But all in all, it saves me a bundle and provides much peace of mind as it regards managing my heating costs.
  • McCain =/= Obama on energy
Obama said he would have rather had gas prices go up more gradually than as quick as they did. He also doesn't want to drill for oil on our own turf. That doesn't align with McCain's "do everything" to lower energy costs (drill, nuclear power, conserve, alternative energy).
