Aug 01, 2008 -- Can you haggle in a chain store?

Years ago, Clark recalls getting a unique call from a man who explained how he haggled at Wal-Mart. Haggling at a chain store that's already turbo cheap? It turns out that idea is now in vogue. America's Research Group reports that two-thirds of Americans say they've haggled in a store during the last 90 days. The Los Angeles Times reports that some chain stores have now given floor employees the authority to accept lower prices, especially on electronics. Many retailers also have matching policies where you can show them a competitor's ad and get the lower price. Clark's not sure if he thinks of that as bargaining. Do you have a great haggling story?     I haggled at chain store recently. The online price was cheaper than in store and the manager said it was up to him whether he met price or not. I negotiated and got online price.

    I lived in the Middle East for a time, every thing is negotiable there, my wife would spend ten-fifteen minutes haggling on a quarter. It seems it is based on the idea that someone thinks they are getting a deal, when most merchants simply mark up the sticker price to accommodate haggling.

    Anyway, we have haggled over here a number of time. I bought a camera bad, very nice item but it was way overpriced, I asked the clerk (being polite & stating the item was nice but way overpriced) and we came to a price that was about 50% less than the sticker price well worth it. Cars of course and I was recently buying a houseful of appliances and I forced a tough price match on minimal evidence.

    I successfully carved off $280 off an LG washer listed at $999 and another $280 off the matching dryer also listed at $999 just by telling a major electronics store that I was going to buy those items the next day at a competitor. I had to stick to my guns when they at first offered a smaller discount, but when I said that I would only buy at those prices they matched it. I didn't even have any proof that the competitor was offering those rates.

    Lowes Home Improvment,I talked them in to giving me an electric drill set for the one day price,on a MOnday after the Sat/ one day sale,I had call the stores near me and they said they was out of the set,so I didn't go in on Sat.Mon I was in the store and I ask to speak to the manger,I ask hime if they had got a shipment in on Sunday,He said no,I real nicely showed him the stack of drill set, over 60. and told him what the salesperson told me on Sat. He ask me if I wanted more than one and he sold me it for the sales price and thanked me for shopping with Lowes,which I do all the time,----Also about ext. warranty ,which I had forgotten that I had purchsed,while I was waiting to find a way to get rid of a broken LCD monniter, I ran across the reciept for it,from Office Depot,to my surpise,I had purchased an ext. warranty, I call the number on the reciept,only 2 times,I was told they would send me a gift card from the store for the full price, {it was 2 1/2 yrs old, the warranty was to run out in less than 6 months} $349.00 they didn't refund the taxes.When I recieved a letter from Office Depot, they ask me if I would except the enclosed check instead of the gift card...I still don't buy ext warranties on everything, I use my judgement on what is a good buy.I also shop alot at Office Depot.I belieive we need to suport the companies who treat us right,,,,,Margaret siler

    I wanted to purchase a pagoda for my daughter and family as an early Christmas present. They chose one at Lowes. It was marked down to almost a third off the original price. Since I am in Ky and they live in Arlington, Tn, I was doing all this over the phone. To make a long story short, I asked them if they would give me an extra $25.00 off, and was told they couln't do that because it was already below wholesale. After some thought, the manager then said he could give me 10% off. I took that which was just about 5.00 higher than the 25% I originally asked for. Trust me, Lowes is still making a profit on this pagoda, even though it might be small. I am happy with the savings, and my daughter's family is happy with something they can use now instead of waiting until next spring.

    I have negotiated a Panasonic Plasma TV saving $700 and a Toshiba LCD saving $1000. In both cases they came very close to the internet pricing. Paying a few dollars more for their expert advice was well worth it.

    I have negotiated a dishwasher and a plasma tv at hh gregg. I offered $300 less for the tv and they went for $265 less. It took 2 minutes, well worth $265.
  • Dont want to deal with public change jobs
    Well its not up to clerks to make decisions such as these and if they do by saying no, go over their head to supervisor or management. If clerks dont want to wait on customers change jobs. Thats one problem we have with retail stores no customer service or patience. They think all they have to do is order their depts., stock their shelves, set ads and displays. Well to those people that not all. For we as customers in the end pay your wages.

    I WORKED FOR DILLARDS AND THERE WERE A FEW CUSTOMERS THAT TRIED TO FIND A FLAW IN AN ITEM JUST TO SEE IF IT COULD BE REDUCED I VERY SELDOM ASK MANAGEMENT AND TOLDTHE CUSTOMER NO IT COULDNT BE REDUCED THOSE TYPES OF CUSTOMERS NEED TO SHOP AT FLEA MARKETS AND YARD SALES INSTEAD! good grief! PEOPLE WANTING SOMETHING FOR NOTHING

    When I worked retail, the ones who tried to haggle were usually a pain in the ass who had to win no matter what. Customers who feel entitled are what makes bad attitudes in low paid, stressed out retail employess
  • I don't like haggling
    I don't like haggling. An important strength of the American economy is plain dealing -- you don't have to go through a haggling process or wonder if you got the best deal you could. I'd hate to lose that.

    I've haggled over damaged goods. If the product you are buying from the showroom floor has even a small mark, even chain stores will give you 20-30% off (even if the blemish is negligable)
  • Haggle at Brandsmart
    I was able to haggle my way at BrandSmart. Apparently if you tell them that you saw the (in my case tv) on sale at Brandsmart for a lower price in the past, they look it up on their computer and will offer you their lowest price ever for that item. It saved me over $100 on a Plasma TV.
