Jul 30, 2008 -- Slow economy, soft travel means globe-trotting deals

As the economy slows, there will be bumps along the way in the travel industry -- along with some opportunities. Aloha Airlines, a full-fare airline that served Hawaii and parts of the United States, has gone out of business because it could not survive against a discount airline called go! Fares went down from about $200 one way to $49 one way because of go! We may see more full-fare failures in the industry as the discounters continue to offer appealing rates. One caveat: Those who bought their Aloha tickets with cash or a debit card (and haven't yet used them) lost their money. So be safe and only buy tickets with a credit card.

A new report finds that air travel is really softening in the United States, which means there will be great deals available. Richard Branson's V Australia opened a route between Los Angeles and Down Under and was offering a $777 roundtrip special before it sold out. Meanwhile, the open skies policy will open up new flight routes between America and Europe, which will also mean lower fares. Clark will update you again in the coming weeks on summertime travel deals to the Old World. On the domestic front, the decreasing demand for travel means airlines can't raise fares willy-nilly just because of high oil prices. So watch out for the gotchas, such as baggage-handling fees or high charges for bringing your pet onboard.

I agree with Jeff. I have MUCH difficulty finding the fares that are advertised on the radio. I've even gone to the other sites and still don't find what was mentioned on the radio. Where are the advertised fares coming from?
  • Christa, where was this fare found?? I called US Air - they don't even have service to St Croix. Was is a different carrier? //
Round-trip rates to St. Croix on USAirways are $351 on trips completed by December 10. Start travel on or after September 2. Add $15 per direction for Friday-Sunday travel days. Stay at least any two nights. No blackouts. Purchase by September 12.

This web site is horribly laid out. NOT user friendly and you really need to consider re-working this thing. Whoever built this site needs to be fired. I hate coming here because it's not user friendly and not laid out well at all. I listened to your show everyday. My beef is not with you, but rather your web site....as I was listening I heard Crista/Krista yesterday 8-14-08 and she was talking about deals for flights to Canada....$62-Halifax / $67-Calgary / $102-Vancouver, OK fine where are they? No where to be found on this site I assure you. If one must go to another site (Travelocity, Hotwire..etc), how about a heads up and a little direction as to where to go to purchase these specials. This is why I don't like the site. If you say it on the radio, you should have a link to it so we can access it and not spend 45 minutes to an hour trying to find something that's not listed here.
  • Deals...I doubt it
I bet clark isnt booking any international trips, why would he, when the dollar is at historical lows, airfares at historical highs and the fuel surcharges and taxes to leave the country add up to what a ticket used to cost...european hotels are $150 a night for a fleabag dump even clark wouldnt stay in...the only deals overseas are on cruises which can be booked with increasingly worthless dollars and include room and meals, but don't hold your breath trying to get a deal on airfare to the port
