Jul 28, 2008 -- ING Direct's privacy policy bucks the trend

When was the last time you got a notice in the mail from your bank that began, "We value your privacy…"? These privacy policies are typically printed in mice type and written in legalese. They explain all the harm that the bank will visit on you -- by selling your private information -- as part of their normal course of business. But ING Direct is reversing this trend. Their privacy policy explains in plain English that you'll have to opt in to their information-sharing program if you want them to share your info. Meanwhile, if you tell the average bank not to share your info, they're still allowed to do so with select "marketing partners." Clark thinks ultimately there's more money to be made from being honest to your customers than in taking advantage of them.

Glad to hear ING uses plain english to explain privacy protection policy! Just opened new savings with them. They also seem to offer the best interest rates too!
  • Common Sense
While we may be portrayed as country bumpkins by the "coasties", it is money that makes the world go round. Banks and CC companies have HUGE amount of money into lobbiest' to wine and dine the politicians and give money to their campaign, which is why they get elected. Some citizens get informed about the candidates, but most people get info on the "hot topic" of the campaign from the sound bite on the news or internet. I hate to say "Opt-in" is not a hot topic. Plus it also gives the USPS a reason for existing. I mean how many times do you mail a payment anymore? I would guess 90% of your bills have an automatic payment option. I would also say 95% of the banking institutions offer free online checking so you almost never need to write a check. Nobody mails letters so the only thing you get in the mail is catalogs and "special offers"
Oh well, I am still breathing, my kids are growing and the earth is still spinning. Life is good.
