Jul 17, 2008 -- Clark flips over the Flip

Oprah and Clark are on the same page about something again! First, they liked the same ice cream. Now, they've both gone crazy for a very simple technology -- little portable video cameras that are idiot-proof.

Most video cameras just gather dust in homes across America. They have too many attachments; they're too hard to use; and they're not small enough to be available during spontaneous moments. They're only good for planned events like graduations, weddings and more.

As a self-professed techno-idiot, Clark loves the Flip Ultra -- priced around $90. There's a built-in USB connector that pops out of the side and lets you automatically upload video to YouTube, PhotoBucket or anywhere else. Similar cameras from Creative Video and RCA are available in a comparable price range.

So if you've been missing touching moments on vacations, or with your children, this could be a perfect solution. You can instantly send video across the world from an Internet cafe.

What website do you find the Flip cameras?
  • The Flip can slip into your pocket
I purchased the Flip Mimo which is their smallest version. I am loving this video camera since purchasing about a month ago. My wife and I were considering a larger, more traditional camera but I wanted something with a hard drive or flash 'diskless' memory insteading hassling with tapes. Those types of video cameras tend to cost $300-500. Our friends with the cheapie cameras that use tapes hate them after a while since it is diffult to upload/watch the clips. I have had absolutely not problem watching clips on the TV direct from the Flip or uploading them on my 5 year-old Dell laptop with Windows XP. The built in software lets you cut/paste clips together very easily. Only gripe that I have is that there is no image stabilization on the lens so you do have to be fairly 'still' when recording. A sacrifice I'm willing to deal with for this price.
  • The Flip
I purchased a Flip camera after seeing it on the Rachael Ray show and I love it. I have made many small movies and have had no problem downloading them to my computer. They all load separately and you can choose to combine some of them to make a longer movie. I have emailed them to relatives with no problem. You should try to get someone else in the company to work on the problem. There may be something wrong with your camera.
  • This Flip is a big flop
I purchased a Flip on your advice. It says it will hold up to one hour of video. it will but it won't upload it to the computer. I have 130 clips of 20 seconds or less and it does not treat each clip as a file. it treats all 130 clips as one file and is too big to upload to my computer. I contacted Flip and all they said is you can't upload a file of more than 100 k. that isn't very much. now i have 130 clips of vacation that I can't upload. so to me your flip is a flop. i am going to report this company to the BBB to warn people of this scam of a camera.
