Jul 03, 2008 -- Unemployment compensation extended for 13 weeks

CLARKONOMICS: Several surveys -- including the official one from the feds -- show that payrolls are shrinking. Yet the unemployment rate stayed steady at 5.5 %. How can that be? Some economists think job seekers are discouraged and have stopped looking for work. That's still anecdotal at this point.

Yet the reality is that while things have gotten tougher, it's not a disaster. Many people hear the news about the job market and think things won't improve. But that's not the way capitalism works -- we go through cycles.

Unemployment likely will rise over the next year. But even so, there's always someone hiring. Networking can help you ferret out those offers.

Meanwhile, if you've been unemployed and have exhausted your benefits, Clark has some good news. Pres. Bush signed a law that extends benefits for 13 additional weeks for those who are actively seeking work. For full details, see the text of the new law.

Don't delay or you may forfeit a portion of the benefit. Contact your state's Department of Labor to renew.

  • Filing a New Un-employment claim
Well people with three weeks left to go on mu first extension,I get a letter about filing for regular unemploynent again,So now it is Day 6, and no letter,no money, everythng is due, rent, insurance, can't buy food, maybe they will let me pass on this letter
  • Prepared
I also have received 2 letters. One states that I need to report to the career center. This does not explain what I need to bring when I go. Does anyone have an idea? I have notebooks of calls and rejections. At 52 next step is trying to teach an old dog new tricks.
  • Hire then 'no hours' job remedy
Hi Howard; Amazing that you cleverly formed a lucrative career becoming a master of anti poverty. Clark I hope you can help with a solution. For the second time, I have been hired, with resumes, background and drug test.. Then led on to believe I had a job (only 9 dollars an hour)and would be able to make some affordances, to then suddenly find no available hours. On this last one only hard core refugees just in from the most shaky place are getting sufficient hours of 40 and even as much as 58. At 62 now I am thinking to file a complaint with the Bureau of Labor and Ind(BOLI) on age, sex, racial, and national discrimination. Please help as you find time. Have a Merry Christmas, and thanks, Ulis
  • Unemployment Extension
on 8/25/08 I received two letters from Ga DOL. The first letter showed my meager part time earnings, the other letter seemed to be a determination letter. The meaning of the determination letter is not straight forward at all. Under Monetary Determination it says "POTENTIAL EUC". I contacted the Ga DOL and was told I would now be passed to a claims examiner for review. So I haven't been approved yet. Apparently this would not have happened had I not contacted them. FOLLOW UP!
  • UI Extendion
I also received a letter and applied over a month ago. No determination letter and no check. Calls, emails, faxes, and letters have gone unanswered. It is somewhat reassuring to know that I am not the only one waiting. Why can't the GDOL website be updated with information?
  • UI extension
I received my letter and applied over a month ago but have yet to receive a check.
The Ga DOL told me last week they were waiting on the Feds.
    Has anyone received a check?
  • unemployment extended
I have beeen also told wait on the letter.. Do you think that we can give this note on wait for the letter to the people I owe money to for gas and food and they will take it
  • extended benefits
I called my labor office and was told by my case worker to keep on certify each week on line and I will be getting something in the mail.

As directed I am going online and certify each week and see a comment from the labor department I will be receiving a letter.. No letter yet and no one is returning my calls on when and how much will I receive. I am still keeping track of my weekly contacts where I am looking for employment.

Can you help with more info
  • A cheating web site
There is a web site that offers suggestions and ideas, supposedly, that helps people make money and other financial suggestions. His name is Gary North and he is a liar. And a thief. On or about 4 am on July 1, I advised him via email that I want to cancel my subscription to his site. I got my visa card today and he charged my account. I sent him an email requesting a refund since he knows that I cancelled. This afternoon he writes back to say you subscribed twice. Lucky for your bad memory. He will not show proof that I paid more than once. In any case, he could at least show that he paid ONE of the submissions back. But won't. I strongly suggest people not subscribe to his web site, GaryNorth.com. He lies if he does not want to refund your money, $14.95 per month. Thank you.
  • unemployment extension
I was also told by my Reemployment Specialist to wait on the letter in the mail.
  • extension
I called the Georgia Department of Labor and they were rude and only told me to 'wait on a letter' to be mailed. I asked the friendly government employee if she knew when they were mailed. she said 'we don;t know nothin' about it'.

If anyone has any knowledge about filing for extensions in Georgia, please tell me.
  • Unemployment
I still see a lot of high paying jobs posted on employment sites. Some of the sites listed in About.com's top 10 job sites:

    http://www.realmatch.com
    http://www.indeed.com
    http://www.simplyhired.com

    Get relentless!
  • Some explanation with that opinion?
"That's still anecdotal at this point. "

    Why?
