Jun 19, 2008 -- MagicJack still wowing Clark

Being a cheap guy, Clark is often willing to take a chance on a wide variety of thrifty things -- including dubious tech services that soon fail and go into his company graveyard!

The latest service that Clark's been excited about for some time is MagicJack.com. A scant $40 buys you 1 year of unlimited local/long distance VoIP phone service. An Internet connection is required for the hardware -- a jack that you plug into your computer's USB port to start making calls. Subsequent years of service cost around $20 annually.

Clark is going to Scandinavia in late summer and will use MagicJack with the free Internet connection in his hotel rooms to call back to the United States -- all for nada.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that MagicJack is the fastest growing phone company in the United States. It's supposedly racking up 9,000 new customers everyday. That blows away the traditional cell phone carriers who are probably losing that many customers on a daily basis!

MagicJack's business model is a complete mystery to Clark. He long ago expected them to be in the graveyard, but he hopes they stay around.

One caveat: We do receive customer service complaints about MagicJack on the show. But Clark is enamored with this service that works out to be about $3/month! It's unbelievable.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Magic Jack
I purchased the MJ about two weeks ago. Installation was simple, I canx my local & long distance. Purchased the 5 year plan plus one year svc come out to $10/yr. So far I'm extremely satisfied.
  • Magic Jack
I have purchased 3 of these units. All three have failed after a few months. I have attempted to correct the problems with their functionality. But even with the so called help the units have never been successfully reconnected to the internet. My opinion about this product is "Not worth the money spent". Avoid wasting your money on this product.
  • phone number
I would like to get magic jack but what is the cost.
  • MagicJack Blocks teleconference lines
II have been using Magicjack for about 5 months now. I have BEEN extremely please until they just recently decided to block all outgoing calls to other teleconference service. I will have to go back to a land line due to the number of conference I must attend...poor choice by magic JACK
  • Magic Jack Blocking Numbers
Magic Jack is now blocking their customers from calling certain numbers, primarily conference bridges. So you don't have unlimited calling as they advertise.
  • house grid
I wanted my MJ to work on all extensions in the house. First, I unpluged my telephone line from the pole outside to the box on the side of my house to take me off the Telephone Company Grid. To insure I had enough power from my computer, I use a USB power booster to plug my MJ into, and then run a telephone line from my MJ directly into any phone jack and poof....all extensions in the house work.
  • Magic Jack - Not a free trial!
So your pending charge of $46.90 AND $1 stays on your account for your "Free" 30 day trial. The customer service person used their customer service logic to explain to me that the money would be "released" once the device was returned or after 30 days. What a great free trail....
  • got ruined by "upgrades"
I bought a MagicJack. Paid the $40 it actually is--not sure why they are allowed to falsely advertise it for $19.95/yr on TV all the time. But I digress. It worked GREAT. Then Saturday, it was to be upgraded/updated. BIG MISTAKE.
After third call or fax it would issue a HIGH PITCHED WHINE and I got a message that the application was shutting down because it was out of memory.
Not possible--clean, lean machine with huge hard drive.
    Toyed with it. No luck.
Used customer service. First agent worthless. Tried some other things on own. Called back. Got guy who knew his job. It worked.
Next day, exact same thing repeated.
I don't do downloads, scan computer daily, update antivirus every couple of hours, etc. so I know it's NOT me--everyone should have such a clean computer.
So when it was the same old story: product works, idiot hired to screw it up, management lets idiot screw it up, I took it back.
I am sad, because it WAS amazing before an idiot was allowed to butcher it.
MagicJack: BETA test, baby. Don't hire the kid of someone's "friend." Listen to your customers. Undo errors. Sell the device for the price you advertise.
It's not too late. If you admit your errors and correct them (get rid of that upgrade, fire the moron, and advertise the REAL price) I'd try you again. You WERE that good.
  • Magic Jack : No Caller ID
I've had the magicjack for 3 months now and overall my experience has been good... but I have one complaint. I have my cordless phone base plugged into it and the handsets have a caller ID displays on them. When you receive an incoming call, there is no caller id info displayed on the phone handset. The incoming call info only displays on the display on the computer the magic jack is plugged into. I contacted their tech support and after 10 minutes of beating around the bush, they finally told me "No, Magic Jack will not display Caller Id info on the phone's display." To me this is a dissapointment. There were some other issues too. In Oregon the local calling areas for regular phone service are pretty small compared to other states I've lived in. When I was given the metro area options for my magic jack number, I couldn't pick my local calling area. For me that doesn't matter, but for my next door neighbor to call me on his landline, its long distance for him.

Overall, I still think it's worth it. I went from spending $85 a month for a landline and DSL to $45 a month for naked DSL at twice the speed plus the magic jack.
  • magic jack
We love the magic jack. We use it as our home phone and it travels with us to boot. We have dumped our land lines. Re-upped with MJ for 5 more years at $14/ year. !!!! What a deal. It isn't always toh phone company in connections but 95+% it is. We are saving a bundle. I will be crushed if they go out of business. It is the best deal ever.
  • Magic Jack is Great
I recently switched to Magic Jack and am very happy with it. I had my old land line number ported to my cell phone, so have not trouble keeping in touch. Any problems I have had, such as garbled sound, calls not ringing, etc. have been solved by a reboot of the computer. We also upgraded our DSL speed since some calls were being lost with our former 1MB service. We haven't lost a call since. When we travel, I forward calls to my cell. I'm looking forward to my next trip overseas. I'll carry the MJ and my netbook with me so that I can call back home for free. Many family members are now dumping their landlines to follow my example.
  • Magic Jack is Terrible
I bought it today, installed it, and my DSL kept on going off whenever I made a call. I spent 5 hours online on the chat page with Magic Jack techs. None could help me. One even disconnected me. Terrible product. Terrible service.

Just bought this device at a retail outlet.

Easiest computer related device I have ever installed.

Step 1. Plug it in a USB port. It installs itself.

Step 2. Tell it what area code and first three digits you want. You can pick almost any where. You can have a New York, L.A. , Chicago, etc. phone number if you wish.

Step 3. Tell 911 operators your actual physical location. (if needed and optional)

Step 4. Plug phone into Magic Jack then make and recieve phone calls.

Elapsed time is less than 5 minutes.
  • majic jack
I have had magic jack for 2 years now as my home phone love the service never a problem at all Only draw back at this time not all area codes are open but they are adding them quickly. I give it a 10 on the scale of 1 to 10
  • MagicJack
Love it!! $20.00 a year!! Bye bye to cell phone bill and contracts.
  • My MagicJack Experience
I recently purchased a magicJack at my local office supply store. I have very few complaints about it; my grandmother could install it. However, I was forced to pick a number that was just far enough away that my parent's landline must dial long distance to reach. Not much of a problem in today's cellular age but still should have been entirely avoidable.
  • Magic Jack
Just got this. Easy to install. We fired our landline phone co. 2 years ago. This is a great alternative. Now waiting for cell contracts to expire and going to Net 10. MagicJack sound quality could be better
  • Magic Jack
After reading MANY reader reviews about this product, I came to the conclusion that MJ users either loved it - or hated it ~ and not much in between. So, I decided to try it ... and here is what I experienced:

After taking perhaps 15 minutes to setup, I have been using MJ for the past few days ... and here are the DISADVANTAGES:

    1) You must keep your computer on 24/7 if you wish to have continuous phone service; turn your computer off, and MJ automatically switches to Voicemail.

    2) Don't attempt to download anything from the internet while on the telephone ~ you'll lose your connection.

    3) You must (at this time) change your telephone number to a MJ number in one of MANY area codes (YOU ARE UNABLE TO KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL NUMBER - although I read that MJ expects to allow one to port their number later this year).

    4) In order to work properly, you must have a high speed internet connection.

NOW - here are my findings in my experience with MJ:

For $20 per year (or as little as $12 per year with 5 years prepaid), THIS IS A NO BRAINER ... a few minor inconveniences to save yourself as much as $600 per year. Incidentally, all phone conversations we've had since installing MJ sound EXACTLY like "normal phone calls" ... no breaking up, delays, etc.

Finally, I forgot to add that MJ also includes VM that triggers an e-mail (with a voice file) to you when a message is left; thus, if you use a Berry or other smartphone, you can receive VM notifications whenever/wherever. MJ also includes Call forwarding, Caller ID, etc.

I HEARTILY RECOMMEND THAT YOU AT LEAST TRY IT OUT - 30 DAYS FOR FREE!!
  • Magic Jack Return Nightmare
I ordered the MJ, tried it a few days and returned it via UPS within a week due to it not being able to send or receive faxes or link to other cordless phones in the house. Then the nightmare began!

I returned it via UPS to their corporate office since I wanted proof of the return. 2 months later and several communications via "CHAT" (which is a lot of fun). No refund has been received. The CSR just says no record of the returned item despite the fact I provided the UPS tracking number. I copied and pasted the chats and plan to file a complaint with BBB and Florida Attorney General. So buyer beware.
  • Magic Jack
OK, I use one of these in addition to a VOIP service through Teleblend. I'm a computer geek but a realist as well. Here's my take.

First off, the setup of the Magic Jack is extremely straightforward. Assuming your computer is up to par, that is. Like any new device or software you install on your system, you need to be sure your system meets the minimum requirements for what you are installing. If you have an old 486 system running Windows 95, it's probably not going to work. If you have a system that was built within the last three to five years or so, you'll have no problem.

After reading several of the comments here I think that many of the installation problems stem from incompatible systems or the user's lack of experience with installing hardware devices. Simply put, if the system is relatively new, meets the requirements and you follow the installation instructions correctly, you should be up and running in no time.

  • Magic Jack
Now for the performance of the Magic Jack. I have used standard VOIP phone service for the past three years and love it! Sure, if the power goes out you have no phone. But most of us have cell phones anyway so it isn't a huge issue anymore. The call quality is typically better than to old copper landline and the additional services that are offered for free by the VOIP providers would easily cost more from the old phone company than the total price I now pay. The Magic Jack is very similar to standard VOIP services (like Vonage etc.) except that it connects directly to your computer. This means the computer must be on for you to make and receive calls. Standard VOIP services give you a box that connects into your network and works without a computer. That difference noted, the Magic Jack offers pretty much all of the same features as the standard VOIP providers. Voice mail, 911 service, call forwarding, call blocking etc. It also notifies you via eamil when you have messages. The other cool feature of Magic Jack is that you can take it with you when you travel (assuming you have a broadband network connection where you are). Going on business travel? Plug it into your laptop at the hotel and you have your business phone right there. It can be a very handy feature.

As far as call quality is concerned, I have found it to be comparable to my standard VOIP. I have experienced occasional audio breakup (choppiness) on some calls. However, this is usally due to network load on my system. For example, if I am downloading files on my system and make a call, there is a likelihood that I will experience some quality issues. This isn't the norm, however, and it can be remedied by pausing the downloads or, as some users have done, using the Magic Jack on a dedicated computer. The same type of problems can occur if your broadband internet speed is not high enough. I originally had my VOIP service on a 768k DSL line and it worked well. Now I have a 15Mb line and it always works. You really should have a decent connection speed for any VOIP, including Magic Jack, to work well.

One other issue I do experience on occasion. When my system boots it will not detect my Magic Jack. It doesn't happen often but when it does, I need to disconnect and reconnect the device. Granted, I have a lot of things loading on my system so the most likely culprit is not the Magic Jack but some other driver or device that is causing the problem. I think for most typical users, you will not see this problem.

  • Magic Jack
All in all, I think it is a worthy device in the VOIP market. The pricing is almost unbelievable. There are still some kinks to be worked out but you have to remember that this is a relatively new product. My guess is that if it takes off in a big way the prices will go up as well.

If you like to try new things or are a gadget freak, this is the device for you. If you are skeptical, keep your old phone service for awhile while you try it. At $40-50 for a year of service, it isn't too much of a gamble. Kick it up to five years and you are into the whole deal for a little over a $100 total. That's six bucks and change each month for full phone service! About the same price as one lunch a month. How can you lose?
  • JUNK
It's junk, Terms of Service leave you with no rights and vulnerable, the 5 year add on is deceptive, it adds 4 years to your original first year. I'm wiping the operating systems from my 4 computers and reinstalling each one to eliminate all traces of MJ. Before you buy check out every Google link you can find about MJ. Also look at The Unofficial Magicjack Forum.
  • grade B
I've had MJ for a year now, strictly for Phone, no fax. the Pros are obvious. just wanted to share some Cons:

*sometimes a call just won't go through, dial tone is there, dial and no rings, this can happens 5 times in a row. had to hang up & wait a few (~5-10) minutes. then it worked again

*"no-service" people live up to their namesake

*each jack has a "activation" code. I got 2 MJ. i enabled the 2nd MJ a month later than the 1st, & mistakenly put the code in for the 1st MJ. Viola now my 1st MJ has twice the life and 2nd is still dead. MJ won't fix it. i had to buy 1 more code.

    * must include area code for in- & outbound calls

    * still cant port #s
  • read the fine print
I was happy with the price but not thrilled with the performance. And apparantly not reading the fine print was the deathstroke for me and MJ. Apparantly my daughter made an insane amount of calls out on the device. I thought unlimited mean't unlimited, but apparantly MJ can cut off your service any time they fell you have made too many calls out. I called their customer no-service and they told me to use MJ anymore I would have to pre-pay. I asked them so there's no way you can just work something out? They said no. I said then since the quality was sub-par I would not use there product anymore, the no-service person on the line said "Thats fine, sir." So thats my lousy experience with them. If you or your wife/kids whoever use it a lot keep track of the minutes.
  • Works Great For Me
I bought my MJ recieved it in 2 days plugged it in went through the set-up a child could do this,it was so simple , plugged in my phone it worked great , I had a little static setting up my voicemail so I downloaded the upgrades and it fixed everything I have no complaints , but I was still skeptical I waited a few weeks still awesome , I cancelled my home phone and have never looked back , I wish I would have bought one a long time ago Great Job Magic Jack !!!!
  • Magic Jack
I have had Magic Jack installed for a few days and I am totally amazed at how well it works. It did take a couple sessions with the online chat folks to get it going but the problem was not with Magic Jack...it was the phone I was using. Having dropped my landline I bought the Magic Jack since I needed some way to still send and receive faxes. Today I hooked up my fax machine to test it and it worked perfectly.
  • Magic Jack
Did not work for me but it got me looking for alternatives and I found the OOMA system, 40.00 it ain't but for 250.00 no more monthly phone bills and it actually works as is should. Love it!
  • service
I have spent 35-40 hours maybe more on support. Only once was I refer up the line. They all do the same thing and and the problems become more and more complex, the connection is poor, I have a great connection rate, the support is the worse I have ever use and I go back to the commodore 64.
  • Magic Jack
I had MJ sin the beginning and had no major issue, and I have an old 4 yr laptop, works great all the time even when I am out of town, get email voice from anywhere ( as long as you have a email address ) great deal love it
  • It ain't Magic, Jack
I got the MJ...They claim you just plug it into your computer, plug your phone into MJ and call...Nah.

It took 2 customer service reps one and a half hours to instruct me (via chat) on which "upgrades to download"...one independent of MJ.

Then when I used it the voice was clipped sounding. Like words were being cut off.

When I went to return the form on the web site said I was beyond my 30 days trial when in fact I was only 10 days into it.

I hate Ma Bell...but when I pick up the phone the little sucker works...99% of the time.

    MagicJack ain't Magic, Jack.
  • Magic Jack Phone
I tried the Magic Jack and found that when it downloads it ends up corrupting file pages on my hard drive and now my computer locks up when using aps that require a lot of memory. Are others experiencing this?
  • Magic Jack issues
After reading Clark's endorsement I admit I was ready to purchase, what the heck it offered a money back Guarantee? However I did a bit more research and found quite a few questionable issues with this company.
I'm happy to say I have not fed in the hype and did not purchase this horrible product that has such excessive substantial non-compliance ranking among countless customers.
PEOPLE . . Do your research.
  • Better Bus Bureau rates Magic Jack "F"
Bought one magicjack they immediately deducted $94.80 from my credit card.
Despite the Order conformation e-mail I rec'd that said. . . . "Free Trial Jack will not be billed to your credit card until the **30 Day Free Trial expires."
I said ok well if it does what it is suppose to do it wil be well worth it - otherwise I will just return it.
Only 7 days into receiving this. . . Lousy phone system!!!!
-Need USB2... will not work with USB computer can't sense it.
    -Poor CUSTOMER SERVICE
-I was told I could TRANSFER CURRENT home Number . . not
    -poor phone connectivity
    -clicking
    -static
    -dropped calls
    -NO HISTORY OF CALLS PROVIDED
-Will not work with HOUSE ALARM
-The BBB gives the MagicJack people an "F" for service, failure to refund, etc.

Went to magicJack and proceeded with the RMA Process.
I could not figure out why it would not left me return it until I see the small print . . . . "*At least 2 items are required to generate an RMA"

What a rip off I only ordered one item.!!

With the time I have spent just trying to return this "free trial" . . .STILL no refund still and it's been over 4 months now.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT - Too many problems, big waste of time trouble shooting something that is suppose to be sooo SIMPLE and cheap NOT.
It's just not worth all of the time and aggravation
  • Magic Jack & High Speed Internet
From a antenna on my roof I now get 3 meg downloads & phone frm MJ for $36.00 a month . I ordered service & MJ on 6 Feb 09 , it was installed today 9 Feb 09 & the MJ was in my mail box today!
For nearly $100.00 had i kept Comcast for the same service & I could not get it at all fro Verison (my phone co. ) .

The service is great and cheap!
  • Magic Jack
Just got MJ today. Plugged it in and it was working within 5 minutes. Call quality is equal to our traditional land line. Will post again if quality changes. Great price and much better call quality than I expected.
  • MagicJack
I have had MJ for about 3 weeks. It works great for me. It was very easy to install in minutes and the sound quality is very good. I am saving $550/year now that I have canceled my landline phone service.
  • magicJack
I've had the MagicJack since the beta stages. There are times it is great and times it is crappy. I first bought a year of service with the unit like everyone else and then added a year. Recently, I bought five more years. Based on phone company prices I am really not out a penny if it folds tomorrow. If MJ stays around for the whole time I save a bundle. We even use the international feature and it is cheap and works great. Doesn't gig you like a phone card does. Bottom line is I kinda love the MJ and obviously plan to keep it.
  • Magic Jack
I just read a number of comments on line about Magic Jack and they were very negative. After reading about all the problems and how it works, I have changed my mind about trying the product.
  • Overall, it works great!
I'd never even heard of Magic Jack when my husband suggested we purchase this device from Radio Shack.
We bought it, my husband took less than 5 minutes to hook it up and it's been fine. We are using a computer that it about 6 years old (we both use laptops, so this is a computer, CPU only, that we leave connected all the time) Once I set up the MJ, I removed the monitor and keyboard, due to space issues.
We went to Target and bought an expandable cordless phone system (where you only need one phone back, the other units plug into an AC outlet). I've noticed that if it isn''t used for awhile, there is about a 7-8 second delay until you get dial tone, but after that, it's fine.
My husband and I bought our house 4 1/2 years ago and though our house is wired for telephones, we never had AT&T actually install the "box" outside. We'd just opened a business and moved from another state, so using our cell phones was great for us! We had the need recently to also have a home phone and the MJ has been a God-send! We love it and overall have been pleased.
Sometimes I get an echo, but nothing that makes me want to stop using it!
  • Majic Jack
    Clark,
I listen to you every day and you have helped save me lots of money in the past. However I would rather pay the phone company a monthly bill then deal with the "Customer No Service" at MJ. They lied about theid "free trial" and as a rule I found they DO charge you right away despite saying it "free". Nothing short of false advertising in my opinion. I will never open the box when it arrives. It will be sent right back!
  • Incoming calls
I can make outgoing calls on my MJ but cannot receive incoming calls. I called the chat support and didn't get any help. I told them if they couldn't fix the problem I would cancel. There repsonse was You may do as you please. That is bad service.
  • Magic Jack
I was paying more than $100.00 a month with a cable company, for a home phone including international call. I canceled my phone service and brought the magic jack. It works great and I can buy international minutes or use a calling card; which is saving me about $100/month. MJ might not work in some areas but it works great for me. Hooke'm Horns!
  • Magic Jack
This is great. There is a delay and you must remember to leave your computer on, which I did not know, I am not a computer pro. I am saving about $40/month.
  • Magic Jack
I have had my Magic Jack about 3 weeks now and am thrilled with it. Thank You, Clark. This is going to save me about $34 a month.
  • Majic Jack
Please tell me the best way to send back the Majic Jack and be sure I am not billed.
  • Magic Jack
It works great for me. I wanted phones in four rooms so I bought a cordless phone set with 4 phones. One plugs into Magic Jack and other three connect to that phone wirelessly. Volla!! Also AT&T offers stand alone DSL now for $19.99/Month (no phone service required from them. I pay abouot $22/month for DSL and a home phone (Magic Jack) total, no extra taxes or nothing.
  • magicJack Troubleshooting
This is the least expensive and probably the best telephone service that I have EVER used!

This service ONLY costs $19.95/year and with a 5 year license extension it costs only $12.00/year! That's $1.67/month the 1st year then $1.00/month each year thereafter.

Don't believe any of the BAD PRESS you may hear about the service. I discovered what the "technical" problem was, because it actually happened to me. I was having audio and connection problems until I solved the technical problem of my computer's USB bus drawing over 500 mA, actually 580 mA, with everything plugged into the bus.

My eMachine computer, Model T2882, only has a 250 Watt power supply and that was working at its limits with all the computer cards and USB devices that I had plugged into the machine were demanding current.

The attached links is how I solved the problem for less than $20.00!

  • Magic Jack is good, but with some caveats...
Anyone contemplating (or using) a Magic Jack should familiarize themselves with these two excellent resources:

    Un-official MJ support forum:
    http://www.magicjacksupport.com

    DSLReports MJ forum:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/magicjack

Tons of great information on using MJ.

    Problems I ran into:
    1) Wouldn't work at all on PC#1 - had several extended "live help" sessions and they were unable to resolve. Plugged it into PC#2, worked great, no problems. Went back to PC#1, uninstalled/reinstalled Comodo firewall software, works great now.
    2) Choppy voice on incoming calls. From what I've read, this problem is solved by using a router that supports QOS (Quality Of Service). Best one is a Linksys WRT54GL flashed with Tomato (I know, I know, geek stuff, but some of us are willing/able to deal with it). Upping CPU priority of magicjack.exe process only helped slightly. I'm living with it until I can get a new router.
    3) Delay - there is about a quarter-second delay in both directions, so conversations can be awkward if you tend to speak over people (like I sometimes do). Learning to pace my conversation (which is probably a good thing anyway) and not be in such a hurry helps a lot. I don't know if this problem is universal (I suspect so) or if there's anything that can be done about it (I suspect not).
    4) Echo. I hear my own voice echo back on some calls. Not sure what, if anything, can be done about this. Tried all the stuff I found in the forums to no avail.

Best way to run it, as far as I can tell, is on an HP Thin Client, available on ebay for about $100. That gives the MJ it's own stripped down Windows machine, so your regular PCs aren't bothered. Again, this is geeky stuff, so not everyone may be up to the task.
  • I got 2 Magic Jacks
I read some of the complaints and I think people are just hating on the magic jack because they think it is too good to be true well guess what it works great very easy to setup took me less than a minute and i have a bluetooth uniden phone system hooked up to it im happy to start 2009 off paying less for a change i will be installing magic jacks in all my offices sincerely from the owner of http://www.myecofriendlyshop.com
  • Magicjack
Read all the bad press, but purchased it anyway. About a minute to hook up, and in less than 5 minutes it was installed. Works great. Might get a second line.
  • SIMPLY FANTASTIC!
Got the MJ as a gift and I had no idea about it. So I searched the net, read and saw TOO MANY horrible stories and videos... and being kinda geek myself, I faced the challenge of installing it. I got amazed how easy the installation was, no glitch at all. Hooked my regular landline phone, called my friend in Jersey, and WOW, the voice quality is SUPERIOR! Called some more friends in LA, SF, Chicago, DC, and Vancouver and everything went PERFECTLY! Now I'm wondering about all those "bad press" over the net.

By the way, I'm in the Philippines! Using only a 1.5mbps aDSL connection. Mabuhay!

works excellent for me here in Phoenix.
loads a bit slow.on startup.but worth the wait ...I never had connection or quality issues. and use it on three different computers. a+++++
and no I do not work for MJ
  • Works great for me
I have had MagicJack for about 4 months now. Although occasionally I get a bad connection maybe 1 out of 20 calls it works great. If I get a bad connection - I just call again and 9 out of 10 times it is just fine. I use a corded phone. I reduced my cell phone bill and will never go back to a regular phone company. I had zero issues installing on my 4 year old computer. I also set up international calling - easy easy easy. I just wanted to provide a different viewpoint from all of the negative reviews here. and believe me - I was a skeptic before I tried it.
  • MagicJack
I couldn'd agree more with the poor souls, like myself, that purchased this lousy phone system.
I just read the reviews, some positive, but mostly negative.I regret that I invested in this phone
  • MajicJack
Clark, I listen to you most days as my job keeps me on the road and in my car. I knew oif majicJack long before you mentioned it. This is no fad I just got mine tonight and I am paid up for the next five years. I LOVE IT. Its my opinion that folks that don't lik MJ may have a challenged HS internet connection. MaH BEll go to !@?&%$
  • MAGIC JACK
I JUST INSTALLED MJ USING OUR BEDROOM EXTENSION PHONE BECAUSE THE COMPUTER IS IN THE BR. EASY. THE MAIN HOUSE PHONE IS TOO FAR AWAY TO USE MJ SO I'VE DECIDED FOR NOW TO JUST KEEP IT. I'LL USE THE BR EXT. TO MAKE LONG DISTANCE CALLS AND LEAVE THE REGULAR HOUSE LINE IN TACT FOR 911/MISC. CALLS. MY PHONE CO. WANTS $20/MONTH JUST FOR LONG DIST. SO I FIGURE I CAN'T LOSE WITH MJ. SO FAR IT WORKS FOR ME. LATER ON I MAY DROP THE MAIN PHONE # DEPENDING ON HOW MJ WORKS OUT.
  • magic jack ripoff?
I know Clark recommends Magic Jack, but after reading all of the posted comments, wow - almost a mutiny.
    Just an open-ended question:
I looked at the Magic Jack website - it proudly emblazons its page with PC Magazine Editor's Choice 1/17/08 and the PC Magazine logo. I then exhaustively checked the PC Magazine website - there is no mention of Magic Jack on the PC Magazine website. Could Magic Jack be trying to perpetrate a fraud on us?
    What do y'all think?
  • voicemail issues:
I could not connect to my voicemail in which techsupport could not fix.

    Luckily, I figured it out.
If I call 1 + area code + phone number
I can connect to my voicemail and it works great!
  • fix phone issues with an ac/dc powered 2.0 usb hub
I had every possible issue with my magic jack.
if you have issues like i did:

-computer can't sense the usb magic jack
    -poor phone connectivity
    -clicking
    -static
    -dropped calls

with these issues it was the worst phone I've ever had.

I got an ac/dc powered 2.0 usb hub which fixed all of my problems.
Now magic jack is one of the best phones I have!

    Love it!
  • Didn't work for us/privacy concern
The Magic Jack didn't work for us. We spent several hours on the phone chatting with tech support. They were polite and quickly available; but they were never able to resolve the problem. We tried it on 2 different computers. We're not computer novices: my husband does sys admin for a living & still couldn't make it work with our system. But what most concerned me: I went online and did a search for "magic jack problems" and found several disturbing posts about MJ collecting & selling consumer information. The sites suggest it collects not only info about the phone calls you make but also info about your computer. I don't know whether this is true or not: just reporting what I read online. I can say we found MJ files hidden in our registry after we thought everything was uninstalled. Would love to hear what others/Clark know about this, b/c the whole concept of MJ is great & I was very disappointed it didn't work for us. At the same time, I don't want to throw away my privacy to save a few $$ each year.
  • mine works fine...
Just wanted to chime in about our experience. We keep one older laptop running during the times we want to use the phone. We even use an old pulse dial phone with a direct cord atttached to the device. Works fine...Clearwire is our net connection....so that means we have a phone wherever we want to take our laptop, and our clearwire modem....if it keeps working as it does today.....we'll be just fine....

If you are somewhat technically aware...and are not always calling customer service to help you blow your nose....you'll most likely get along fine....I hope they stay in business...for us..it works....but then we don't keep a phone to always bn tuch with the world....we use it to make calls we need or want to make....
  • Where's Clark
I read the above article/Clark's endorsement and couldn't wait to jump on board the MagicJack wagon. As I read the comments below my chin first hit the desk and then the floor. I admit to being a Rookie/novice here but everybody knows you can trust Clark's recommendations. I'm in shock that with this many negative responses and problems that Clark or his staff hasn't intervened by adding an updated point of view or something.

Does my faith in Clark really just reflect my naivety and foolishness?

  • Tips for those with Magic Jack problems...
The Magic Jack was designed brilliantly and its software continues to get better.

If you are having problems, chances are pretty good your computer is causing it.

    http://www.magic-jack.info/

The above web site has lots of helpful information about the Magic Jack! If you need any troubleshooting help, the answer is probably waiting on you there.

The packaging Magic Jack comes in says "In a few rare instances, your USB port on your computer may not have enough power." This may not be so rare after all and in fact fairly common! Before giving up, try AC-powered USB hub with Magic Jack. If you have other things plugged into your USB slots, the more likely THIS is the primary problem you are having. I've got a mouse, keyboard and a printer that all use USB myself. The more USB stuff you have plugged in, the more likely a USB power drain is what causes issues with your Magic Jack.

I hope this helps many of you here. I know, for some, this will do the trick.

Wal-Mart has a good AC-powered 4-port USB hub for less than $20 that works!

Find out more tips (like MagicBlock 1.2 - free program to prevent MJ popups) at the site I've listed above. Good Luck!
  • magicJack (part two)
I think the magicJack is a GREAT invention! If I could get these audio problems taken care of, it would be great! After all, who doesn't want to tell their regular phone company to take their outrageously high monthly service bills and stick them where the sun doesn't shine?!

I contacted the folks over at magicJack again and I explained to them how unhappy I was with their product. Every time you start a new 'chat' with someone over there, it takes FOREVER! They have to go through every thing in the book with you before finally realizing they cannot help you. Then, they transfer you over to someone who calls themselves a 'supervisor'. After having gone through it all over again with the 'supervisor', they confirmed my information and sent me a new magicJack.

We had both come to the same conclusion that the magicJack must have been faulty from the date it had arrived at my residence.

Guess what! It worked well for the first couple of day, but those same old problems are starting to pop up again!

Do we have to wait until the magicJack people iron out these problems? Will they EVER iron out these problems?! This is driving me absolutely crazy, but I still won't go back to paying those outlandish service bills from the phone company!

    PLEASE HELP!!!
  • magicJack
I purchased the magicJack a few months back. At first, it worked great. I told others, "Hey, we did it! We finally beat those rip-off artists over there at the phone company!" However, to my dismay, around a month after purchasing the product, I noticed that the conversations I was having while using the magicJack started to become broken up and people also told me I sounded 'very far away'. Shortly after that, I noticed that when I was finished dialing a number (including dialing the area code first which is a must when dialing while using the magicJack), it would ask me to "Please dial the area code with the number, even though I had already done so. At other times, when I was finished dialing a number, it would cut off and go right back to a dial tone. As the days and weeks went by, these problems only progressed.

I talked to the magicJack people on that ridiculous 'chat box' for three days and used around seven hours out of my time to try and get the audio problems fixed. (If they had a phone number for these type of technical issues, these audio problems would be much easier to work out. It would enable them to work on the problem with me while listening in on the audio problem. This way, when they fixed the problem, we'd both know right away that the problem was fixed.)

I own a Vtech cordless phone with three handsets. The main is connected in the kitchen and two other cordless handsets for two other rooms in my home. At times, the audio on the kitchen phone will be all 'broken up', yet at the same time, while calling or receiving calls, the other two phones will be crystal clear.

When I 'chatted' with the magicJack people, they advised me to try using a corded phone (like one from 1980) because I may be experiencing interference from something in my home. I tried the corded phone, but still noticed these same problems. They advised me to turn off my firewall and disable my anti virus protection. Even with all these steps taken, the same problems existed.

I have a brand new $2,500.00 Dell computer and a very fast high speed cable connection, but they asked me to run a speed test on it to find out what the results would be on my download and upload speeds. As it turns out, my download speed is very fast, but my upload speed was rather slow. The folks over there at magicJack told me during our 'chat' that the magicJack needs an upload speed of close to 130 bps. Although I do have a slow upload speed, it registers in at over 300 bps so that can't be the problem either.

    HELP!
  • Magic Jack
I purchased Magic Jack about 4 months ago. Thankfully, I read elsewhere about the problem with Magic Jack's double billing some customers who order their product. When it happened to me, I quickly contacted my bank and Magic Jack (you have to type all of your comment to a customer service rep. and wait for them to type a response back...)and resolved the problem. It took me a month to get the system to work correctly, and that was with customer services' help. However, Magic Jack only worked 50% of the time. While the system emailed my voice messages, I would not get always get them the same day. I also do not like the fact that you have to keep your computer on all day. I could not use it for a primary phone. I got rid of AT&T and went to switchtolingo.com for our primary phone. Now my wife can talk to her relatives in Canada and Germany for no extra charge.
  • MajicJack
I've had it for about 4 months. It works well about 75% of the time. I use it as a back up for my wireless, when I run low on minutes. It's a great deal, but I wouldn't use it for a primary phone
  • Magic Jack
I am waiting for my second Magic jack to arrive the first one I sent back today. I spend over a week Chatting with MJ support, 2-4 hrs each day. trying to get it to work. I even took it to a friends house to try on their computer. It worked a little better but still could not get incoming calls. Not much trouble with outgoing calls except for the sound being tinny some of the time. I am hoping that the new one will be better as I really look up to Clark and try to follow his lead. Wish me Luck
  • majic jack
the voice quality is terrible. I can connect only 1 out of 5 times you try to call. However, it works extremely well in overseas calls.
Total rating 3 out of 10
  • magicjack
worst connection i ever had. i am returing the unit.
  • MajicJack
I installed MajicJack but I cannot make or receive calls. It tells me about a code 400. What is that? Can someone help me?
    Thanks!

  • support
Is there a phone number for support. I'd like to have it. :)

I purchased it because I don't have a phone in my spare room, but do have a computer and a very old fax machine. TIP: I purchased the line in a more affluent area then I live in so that I can add the phone number to my business card.
  • Magic Jack
I have purchased one and it arrived the next day. Had a little problem getting it set up ( My Fault) contacted on line support they came right on and talked me thru it. My freind and I ( he lives in Baltimnore) talked for over 3 hours and not 1 problem. He liked it so much that while we were on line he ordered 2 of them. He got his in 2 days and both are up and running fine. This is a fantastic deal and thank you . Like anything new there are a few bugs to work out, and those that complain about customer support being not top of the line ( Remember you are only paying 20.00 a years for unlimited phone service. So what would you prefer, the vonage 29,95 per month with lots of phone serve ( which you are paying for) or the 20.00 per year phone service with minimal support. People this is really not that hard to work, follow the instructions. It says to use a max of 6 ft of cord. So use 6. It says if you are having connection problems try turning off your firewall, it say if the phone doesn't dial out but you can with the soft phone (headset and mike) then try a different phone. THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!!! If you are a complainer about everything that is cheap and is trying to save you money then I suggest that you stay with your local provider or get the tried and true and bugs worked out Vonage, but if you are willing to try something new that is 100 times cheaper, and are willing to work with them during the intailation of a super service then this is the one!!!
  • magicjack
i jsut set up magicjack - found it to disconnect - the solution was simple, i hope - i turned off my firewall - sure hope i didn't mess up
  • Majic Jack
I tried to sign up with them back in January. They responded back that it was 4-weeks shipping to get the unit. I called them 8-weeks later (after searching FOREVER to find a phone number) and was told that they just got my order two days ago (in spite of the fact that I had an e-mail confirmation that it had been taken almost two MONTHS prior). They said that I'd have the unit within a week. I never got it, and I gave up!
  • Clark's wallet
I have read about Clark's wallet and mine weighs me down. Where and how do I get a wallet like clarks. It sounds like It can simplify my carrying things. Is it possible to see a picture of it?
    Thanks, Carole Roberts
  • MagicJack Doesn't Work in Dunwoody
I tried MagicJack, based on Clark's recommendation. The sound quality on the calls was extremely poor and it sounded like we gagged and talking underwater. Customer service does not exist and there is no way to receive a refund. When I went to the Magicjack website and requested a RMA number for a return, the screen reported that there was no record of my purchase, although I entered the purchase number and tracking number. Avoid MagicJack.
  • MagicJack Over-Charged
The email from them confirmed my total was $50.85 but I was charged $90.00 on my bank statement. They refuse to refund the $90 which my bank says they were paid. THIS IS THEFT.
  • Majicjack
I don't think there's a live human being there. At least I haven't reached one!
  • Magic Jack
Just installed my MJ and it is working fine. Usual problem that MJ can't solve is that it needs the PC and cable to work during power outages. The only solution to this is probably to put PC on a backup power system that runs PC only with enuf battery life to get you through the outage. My cell phone is one backup but my call quality here at home is lousy so we are keeping our landline through MCI for now as several of our handsets are powered off the phone lines themselves.

So far the sound quality on MJ is good...many local calls and several long cross country calls went well!! No complaints !!

I suspect that most of the moaning and groaning is those who are not PC savvy like myself. On setup I had to resolve the Firewall issue but I moved slowly and figured it out!

Be of good cheer! If you don't get good reply on refunds then simply turn it over to your credit card provider ASAP...the window on this is getting shorter each month..pretty soon the card providers are going to walk away from that obligation entirely I am told by several.
  • magicJack - problems, but worth it
I've had magicJack for about 4 months. Before I bought it, I checked out their website and contacted their live chat, so I knew I wouldn't have much help from them. Still, for the money, I decided to buy. It wasn't a simple plug & play, but it still only took about 10 minutes to get it running. Quality is an issue, and I seem to have problems trying to get through on certain numbers - my doctor, my friend - I get Arrowsmith every time I try to call him, then it disconnects! I've found it gives me the best results when:
1 - I use the 6 inch cord that came with it
    2 - I do a cold boot (2 min off) twice a day
3 - I rerun the magicJack upgradge every time I reboot
4 - I adjust my sound levels every time I reboot
I'm disabled, on a fixed $637 a month income. I just couldn't afford to pay $10.50 a month for local landline service. magicJack IS NOT problem free, but it not only means I can still have a phone, but it also means I can call my best friend who lives 400 miles away...as well as many businesses that my former landline company wanted to charge me 10 cents a minute to reach.
  • And you expected what?
How soon you forgot about Vonage. When it first came out, the internet was full of such things as: scam; no customer service; can't return; won't work; no refund; no tech support and etc. Vonage is still around.
There are lots of online forums to get helpful hints and other user's support.
    Just Google.
And how much are you NOT paying for landlines and long distance?
  • Magic Jack
bought 2 both work fine on one computer except for having to unplug to re-boot computer but none will complete down loading one second computer,,, and a phone service provider that has no phone to talk with customer no service should say something also
  • Magic Jack NO SERVICE !!
Have had two MJ units for three months. First; found I couldn't turn off my computers unless MJ unplugged - - it's designed that way according to their 'live chat'. Second: The 'local' phone numbers available, cover only a few cities so even though you can make outgoing calls without a direct charge per call, you neighbor must pay 'long distance' rates to call you. One unit stopped working on any computer I have but 'live chat' refused to allow refund without hours of checking my computers. I reached the 'live chat' useing the site address since the online MJ "click here for live help" was an endless loop to MJ home page. Best help is from the "unofficial Magic Jack" web site. Clark should be ashamed for pushing this device when the CUSTOMER NO SERVICE is the definition of the product. My experience and research indicates that when it works - it's fine, but. . . if there is a problem the Better Business B. "F" says it all.
  • Read the website for answers!
All of you with problems returning the MagicJack to get a refund is easy. Just visit the website and click the chat online button to chat with a customer rep. I ordered 2, and only needed 1. I used the chat button, and the friendly chat rep. gave me an RMA Number to send only one back. I was only charged for one MJ once they received it. Remember all of you, you have to get an RMA number or go to the MJ website and click on the return button. It's not hard at all if you just read instead of crying about your problems. Oh, by the way, mine works great!
  • Magic Jack Stocks
Is there anyway to purchase stock in MagicJack, and if so what is the name of the stock?
  • Magic Jack --- RIPOFF
    1. It is a very tempting technology with promise.
    2. It does have technical glitches.
    3. The "no-help" that they provide is really NO HELP ... so none of the glitches could be isolated, fixed or overcome ... we have copy of their on-line conversations.
    4. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT IS THAT THEY MISREPRESENT THEIR 30-DAY FREE TRIAL, CHARGING OUR ACCOUNT IMMEDIATELY WAY BEFORE THE TRIAL PERIOD IS UP.
    5. They got their money, they don't care about your problems.
    6. Unfortunately, I did not do my homework and google this company ... also, I finally Better Business Bureau checked them ... WOW ... if I had done this first, never would have done it. (Basically, I took Clark Howard's otherwise very wise advice and bought it. I do not blame Clark, who I raptly listen to religiously ... I blame me for rushing into it without complete research). My bad.
  • phone number
There is no phone number for Majic Jack customer service, the more I dug the less I found out, it is a giant scam and they get away with it because it works for some people, but you never get your $$ back, you only get a run around. Sorry
  • Magic jack
is there a phone # for Magic customer service
  • MajicJack
Does anyone know if complaining to the BBB does any good? Do you complain to the West Palm BBB or to your local office, the companies business practices are shady at best.
  • Majic Jack
My sympathy to anyone who tried to return this, it did not work in our area, and emails to customer service were ridiculous, you really can't return it, they make it impossible, it is a rip off, and the 30 days start from when it is shipped not when you register or try it, we were on vacation, then told to upgrade, then told sorry you are past 30 days, we made 3 unsatisfactory calls, sounded like you were talking under water, the customer service at Majic Jack is nil, be fore warned it doesn't work everywhere, try at your own risk, becasue once your order, it is yours. Good luck everyone, this is a major rip off!
  • Magic Jack
So far so good! I ordered MagicJack on a Friday and got it on Monday. Plugged it in and started making long distance calls to my "out of area" parents. I've only had a couple of sound problems, but nothing major. I love it!
  • Magic Jack
I use MJ to make long distant calls to my mom. Ocassionally, the connnection is bad and I will hang up and try again. Normally, the second time I don't have problems. I think it's a cheap alternative to regular long distance service with the phone company. If you don't have high speed internet then that might cause problems too. Overall, I'm happy with the product.
  • magicjack
I have an 18 yrs old son leaving for college in the fall I have been thinking about giving him a magic jack is that a good idea? I have read some comments about magicjack that are not to favorable to them however I am a newly divorcee and my son is going into premed and we are trying to minize our expenses we have a cellphone that is very expensive with a one year contract left.
  • Rip Off Report
Magic Jack is the biggest rip off I have ever run across, not to mention the fact that the site uses false advertising to lure in customers. The site claims to have a 30 day risk-free trial ending that day, but changes the date daily so customers think they need to act fast. Don't believe this scam!
My Magic Jack didn't arrive in time to try it and return it before the 30 day trial ended. At the time we purchased, the site said 30 days before your card is charge, but the TOS said you also had 30 days after your card was charged to return it. When we tried loading it and ran across several difficulties, then found it wouldn't work properly, we contacted the site to return it. They had changed their TOS after the date we purchased, and given their site a major makeover. They refused to refund until after I contacted the BBB about their business practices. I sent it back today, so we'll see if the refund really happens.
  • MajicJack
I purchased this device for two reasons, 1) to have a metro Atlanta 404 extension for my home office in the suburbs, and 2) because of the price. I have been extremely unhappy with the sound quality. I am on my second kind of phone system and my husband who has been in IT for over 12 years is constantly making adjustments to the computer to try and improve the sound quality. Even with a "good" connection, there is a "tinny" sound as if either myself or the caller is in a tin can. Most of the time there is extreme static , a terrible echo or both. There's got to be a better alternative, I just have yet to find it.
  • I have had it for almost 2 years now
The equipment wont last you a year. I am on my 3rd box. You need a high speed connection or you will have a terrible reception. Anyway it is cheaper than paying 40 or 50 a month.
  • Magic Jack
I am concerned about the service and technical support on this product. I have tried everything suggested to get this phone working. Nothing seems to work. I have tried to contact them to get help but no phone number and the e-mails do not go thru. I have had my phones for two week and can not figure out how to cancel and return the units if that is my only sulution. Please contact me if you cn help.

The BBB gives the MagicJack people an "F" for service, failure to refund, etc. I'm surprised Clark would recommend this.

I ordered the majic jack after i saw the commercial on tv and to my dissapointment I still have not received it after a month and a half nor have I been able to get a hold of the company as the toll free number is an automated system. • Questions
Can you transfer your present phone number to this?
Will it work on all the phones in your house or only the one attached to your computer?
  • Clark Howard's Infamous Voip Services
The problem is if you pay for a service upfront and the company fails you get stuck paying an annual fee for the phone service and a device you won't be able to use. Clark knows about paying for VoIP services that fail and the customers get stuck paying for a service they can't use. The inventor and private stockholders get rich upfront even if the company fails and not accountable. They have no track record.

Have had it for two weeks. I live on Panama City Beach, FL, and it works fine here. There is an echo at times and sometimes it has babbled words, but overall, it is worth the $40 + $20 for additional years. Nothings perfect, but this is great!
  • Magic Jack
Yes it is cheap. but I Accidently ordered two and trid to cancel one but I couldn't. There was no phone number to call and no where in the home page to get a hold of a person to cancel. I now have two of them and don't need one. I thought I could send it back but there wasn't a return label to do that. I'm not sure what to do.

I bought two of these devises about two months ago. One for the US and the other for when I travel. I am in London at the moment I will be their for sometime. I call back to the US and I am delighted to be paying nothing extra except my initial fee. My wife will call me on my magic jack, It cost her nothing either. I am really enjoying it. I do have to be patient some times in getting it to work, but it has come through all the time.

It does support voice mail and a couple of other nice features. I think if they broaden the support and improve on the voice quality, they will have a real winner. As it currently stands, it can be very frustrating with fading out voices, chopped up conversations and other nuisances.
  • Don't use magic fix.
I did use magic fix. It fix itself right into my speaker drive ( I can hear my computer speaker throught the phone speaker ). had to pay some guy from craigslist to fix it. ( put my speaker back to the correct drive)

I tried the 30 day free offer, and 3 weeks into it I canceled my land-line. I have told friends and coworkers, who in turn have thanked me! My cell is pretty useless where I live because I'm rural, and I have it hooked up to a secondary computer (I have 5 computers on a router with cable) so it has no impact on my primary computer usage. Sound quality is great - both sending and receiving. And today I found out they now have my area code. Yippee! Couldn't be happier! Thanks Clark, for another money saving idea :)
  • magic jack
bought two days back.Used it since then for long distance calls in US & Canada.Worked perfect till now.
I do not know how to start other features emergency phone, voice mail etc.I am pleased with it. My wife called all her friends and talked for hours.
    Thanks Clark for the tip.
  • MagicJack
I bought mine about a month ago. Although it slows my computer down, it works very well most of the time. Sometimes I get an echo and/or studder, but it stops.
    Very Satisfied with this product.

  • Rates to Korea??
I have a friend who has a son stationed in Korea. Apparently Magicjack does not have services there yet. Is there another company that does with cheap rates?
  • MAGIC JACK
TRIED DID"T CARE FOR IT. I CAN DO JUST FINE WITH MY CELL.
ALSO IT SEEMED LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO GET INTO MY COMPUTER, BUT MY FIREWALL BLOCKED THEM.
I'M ALSO HAVING TROUBLE TRYING TO SEND IT BACK, I WISH THEY HAD A LIVE PERSON I COULD TALK TOO!
  • Magic Jack
I love the Magic Jack and I will save over $600 this year! It was easy to setup.
  • Magic Jack
I give up. Have tried 3 different phones and It wo'nt work on any of them. They say it's my phone. The phone works phone everywhere else. If you buy it you will be taking a chance.
  • majicjack
    Hi,

I shut my pc down when we have thunderstorms and tornado warnings/watches. Therefore, the only phone connection that I will have is my cell phone. That's something that majicjack did not take into consideration. Living in tornado alley, there are a lot of storms frequently. Just something to consider before purchasing majicjack.
  • Magicjack
Sounds great bought it last year, and found out that they did not offer Spokane area code. I tried to talk to them and they gave me their website and then tried online chat but found noone would help so as of today I have made 1 call and wasted $40
  • MJ poor quality audio
My MJ has poor audio quality. The sound breaks up and I can't hear. I had similar problems with Vonage. But my father likes his MJ and does not have voice quality issues. Not sure what is causing the difference.
  • Answer to Chris
This will work anywhere in the world, as long as you are connected to broadband internet service. The US/Canada refers to the numbers you can call for free. So, if you're in Sweden, a call back to the US is FREE!
  • Free calls back to US
This is a great way for me to make FREE calls back to the USA when I'm abroad (granted, I do need an internet broadband connection). Call quality is fair, nor great. Well worth it for me.
  • Kindov a deal
Worth the money as a teenager phone. If you can afford Skype or Packet 8 then stay with it. MJ quality is not good and cs is nonexistent.
  • Think about it.
Have any of you morons ever thought that if you have a piece of junk computer that maby the Majic Jack wont work as well as advertised. I've had mine for about a year with zero issues. It is hooked up through a computer with good speed and memory. As far as customer service issues, it's $20 a year get over it.
  • MagicJack
I bought it, I tried it, and I sent it back ! ! It works " occasionally ". Many times it disconnects, echos most of the time, as well as many other problems. I thought at first, hey it's only $40.00, but for the amount of problems that it continues to have, it is not worth it to me. I sent it back and said if some of the problems go away call me up and I will try another one. No response. What does that tell you ? ?
  • You can get DSL without Phone Service
To those of you wondering about the why you'd pay for this when you would need a phone service to get DSL in the first place- the short answer is you Don't need to have the phone service to get DSL in some instances. It's called Naked DSL. You'll have to check with your service provider if they offer it.
  • MagicJack
May work in Atlanta. Not so in Savannah. Can call sometimes to Atlanta, not to 800 #s or to private #s out of town. Receiving companies cannot hear me. Conclusion, works best if you're based to/from Atlanta.
  • cheap phone service
    SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • MagicJack
    Clark,

I had bad customer service with MagicJack and the product did not work well for me. I could not even get to anyone in management. I do not recomend this company nor its product.
  • Magic Jack
i found out about MJ on Clark Howard's web site over a year ago. My husband bought 4 since then. We used it in France, Russia, Peru... Also, we use it for calls within USA and Canada which allows us to have lower minute plan with Congular now :). So far, Magic Jack was great, but sometimes you do get poor connection or computer gives a mistake and can't find MJ on your computer and you have to restart both. Its great for travelling, as long as you have Fast internet connection and as long as MJ communicates well with the computer :)
  • MagicJack
Bought It. Did not work properly. Sent it back before the trial period was up. That's all I can say.
  • MagicJack
Do you know if it can be used on cruise ships? Upon the advice of a friend, I purchased a phone and minutes last year for $39.95 that I was able to use once we were out at sea. I used it to make calls from Spain, Greece and Italy. However, my friend who bought it was unable to use it from his ship. I don't know the technical reason but it has something to do with the type of radar (?) equipment on the ship.
  • majic jack
I have it and the down side is you have to keep your computer running 24/7. this is handy to travel with but for a 24/7 i love packet 8 $200/yr and you don't have to keep your computer on 24/7
  • MagicJack
how can Clark use this product in Scandinavia when it advertises that it is for US and Canada only?
  • Magic Jack
After an initial problem where MJ gave me the number that was already registered, I was able to chat with an online rep, who had me go change my number on the website, and it's been working as good as our normal phone line we have over cable. Using high speed cable for internet source.
  • magic jack
have been using magic jack for about a month. Get better saoun quality than lingo. ready to switch permanently.
    ...enjoy your radio program...thanks
  • Good Product, Dubious Support
I've been using the MagicJack for a week or so with no problems until today. Here is the text of my online support chat:

Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Amber'

Amber: Hello, how may I help you?

Brian Levine: I recently received the MagicJack and installed it with no problem. It has been working fine. Just now, I called my wife at home and she said that she could hear someone talking on the line. It turned oout to be audio from a computer game my son was playing. Is this normal?

Amber: I am sorry to know that you are encountering problems using magicJack. Let me assist you with this.

Amber: Open task manager (control+alt+delete) and click the tab named ‘Processes’. Locate and end the following processes: UTSCSI, NEWNET_SETUP, MAGICJACK, and MAGICJACKLOADER. If one or several of these are not listed, do not worry. Now unplug your magicJack, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.

Brian Levine: What will that do? I'm assuming it will force a reload of the software, but its only been a week since I first installed it. Is this a known issue?

    Amber: No

Amber: Please try the above step

Brian Levine: I'm at work right now so I'll have to do this when I get home. I still don't understand what this will accomplish (I'm a software engineer).

Brian Levine: Are you still there?

    Amber: Yes

Brian Levine: Can you tell me what the above steps will accomplish?

Brian Levine: Frankly, I'm still evaluating the product and your company's support

Brian Levine: Any chance you are going to answer my question?

Chat InformationChat session has been terminated by the site operator.
  • Magic jack - magic junk
After using magicjack flawlessly for 4 days, we began experiencing audio problems. After 6 hrs of customer no service and 9 techs, magicjack equals magicjunk. I was on the 30 day trial and sent it back. I am just waiting to see what shows up on my credit card bill before I contest the charges. For Clark to be so adamant about customer service, how can he continue to recommend a product with virtually no customer service and such questionable business practices. I put them in with the "pay day" lenders when it comes to poor treatment of consumers. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT. If you are lucky enough to have been using it successfully, keep hoping that nothing goes wrong. Don't cancel your landline or cut your cell minutes thinking this is the end all. It's not. Clark, do a segment on this subject. You owe it to your listeners.
  • Magic Jack - Observations
I've been assisting a friend with Magic Jack who ordered it to replace a rarely used business line in their home which was costing over $1200/year to have.
    Disappointments:
#1- The website navigation is absolutely horrible and doesn't make it easy to talk to a real person when the FAQs doesn't answer your questions. You end up bouncing around trying to get to a chat-help or phone number. I ended up getting the phone number off the credit card billing statement.
#2- Customer service on the phone wasn't very good. People need to be screened better for english speaking and comprehension.
#3- It doesn't work with all cell carriers calling in to the Magic Jack number. I tried calling it from my SunCom mobile phone and it wouldn't even ring. It worked fine from a landline and cordless phone. The online tech support said it was an issue they were working on and that there may be problems with other mobile carriers as well.
4- Will it fax? I tried to fax on that line but it didn't work. Hopefully there's a fix in the works. $20/year is better than $30/mo for a dedicated fax line.
    The Thrills:
1-Once it was installed, patched, re-installed, updated and patched again with the assistance of the online tech, it worked fabulous! The savings of replacing the landline # is astounding. From $1200 to #20 a year!
Despite the disappointments I've encountered, it seems to be worth getting if nothing else but to try for the 30 day trial. Haven't had any problems with the quality or function of the jack so far.
  • Magic jack
Since adding my magic jack to my computer my internet explorer does not come up, but my favorites show up on the magic jack menu. How do I get my internet explorer and my favorites back from the magic jack menu?
    Nancy
  • magic jack
Does this work with DSL? I have AT&T for my DSL hookup and my home telephone. So how will this save money? What suggestion do you have?
  • Magic Jack
This thing is unbelievable. My husband has family that lives in Morocco, and he has spent tons of money on phone cards. He sent them a Magic Jack, and now he can dial a local US number, and it rings on their Magic Jack phone in Morocco. They can call him or anywhere else in the US for $20/yr! You can't beat the price.
  • International call?
Can I use this product for international calls?
  • Magic Jack
While I like Magic Jack very much it has one major flaw. If users have Xp Service Pack 3 installed Magic Jack will not work. Since XP Service Pack 3 is required to avoid security issues and will soon be downloaded by all XP computer Magic will eventually be unusable if XP is used.
  • fax machine
can I use a fax machine on this system?
  • MagicJack
NOT A SERIOUS REPLACEMENT FOR PHONE CO OR VONAGE:
Need USB2... WILL NOT WORK WITH USB
    NO CUSTOMER SERVICE
    NO HISTORY OF CALLS PROVIDED
WILL NOT WORK WITH HOUSE ALARM
    CANNOT TRANSFER CURRENT NUMBER
  • Majic Jack?
It's there any other catch from magic jack. It sound to good to be true.
  • magicjack
I have found that if you are not running any other programs when calling, the Magicjack works great. I sent one to my honey in the Phillipines and it works GREAT. Sure beats the heck out of the discount calling cards and tel3advantage. It is saving me $100's a month. Try it. It is petty change compared to the savings.
  • Magicjack
The add said pay nothing for 30 days, but 1 week after ordering majicjack,46.50 was charged to my account. There is no customer service #.Active e-mail informed me they could do nothing.color me scared.
  • MAGIC JACK
I've had my MagicJack for a year now and I'm quite pleaed with it. My friend recently bought one after she turned off her long distance service. It saves a lot of money every month, all year.
  • Magic Jack
This seems very cool, I will be checking it out. As for the people with DSL service, I know ATT is comming out with a naked DSL line in some regions which means you don't have to have a landline to have DSL, I think they are testing it towards the end of the year.
  • Magic Jack
MJ won't work on pc with LINUX operating system, not compatible.
  • magicJack worked great in India
I travelled to India in late April. It worked great calling back home to Raleigh, NC. I also called my parents in Illinois and another family member in Indiana. I like good deals and this is truly one of the best deals I have seen for a great product. Phone companies lookout! BTW, you can get DSL internet from AT&T without keeping a phone line if you do not want to get cable internet.
  • Internet connection
To me it seems the down fall of these services is that you need internet service. Now follow me, If your internet comes from your phone line then you need to keep it active and to do so in most areas you need phone service. So keeping a phoneline and paying for it and the connection seems redundent, unless you go thru cable. But, cable internet services are pricey and depending on how much you use long distence it might seem a unvalue to do so. Show me I'm wrong and we'll talk
  • phone service
get on the website my3cents.com and read about the vonage cancel fees,a company like this will scam you.anytime something sounds to good to be true it usually is.besides if I have to have internet service to begin with and this requires a phone service then why would anyone have 2 phone providers DUH! HUH!
  • Magicjack
MJ has it's own network that is how they can do it so cheap. See; http://telephonyonline.com/voip/news/magicjack-attacks-0502/
  • MagicJack
I have it for about a month now. The call quality fluctuating a lot and some time I have to call again to get it better. It occurred to me once right when I had an important call and that was really annoying. But you really can't beat the price. And I like the call forwarding feature. Basically I setup the to receive calls on either my cell or landline--I use magicjack only for outbound calls.
I think what they offers for the 5-year plan turns out to be about $100 for 5 years. that translate to $20/year. I am however concerned about the longevity to their hardware for that long time though and they don't seems to offer free replacement of that. Well, let's see.
  • Magic Jack
I've had a Magic Jack for 4 months now. I use it for long distance calls only and it's great. I do have a problem using a cordless phone; So, I dial from the computer. At $40/yr it's worth the hassle.
  • MagicJack
I've had my jack since August 07. They just got aroung to having my SC area code. I don't think the call quality is anywhere near my cell phone. I just got off the phone with my buddy, and the first thing he asked me, after he picked up the phone was if I was talking to him through a Coke can...... So for me, it's hit or miss with the call quality. Still, we're very happy for the price.
  • MagicJack
The price is certainly reasonable and their service people do try to help. It doesn't seem to work as well with Vista even with their update and it tends to echo or skip when there is another program running at the same time. I think if they are selling 9000 a day, sooner or later they will work out the bugs with Vista. The other problem could be related to the ISP or memory. I am not ready to toss it yet.
  • Magic jack
I had my jack for almost a year now, works very well, a few things people should know before, like you have to have your pc on to make calls, a 2GB is faster loading it than a 1GB, you can have incoming calls forward to your cell or landline. I find the quality of the call is better than a cell phone, there is no number to call for assistance, there is a FAQ. As for that you can't beat 20 bucks a year, for what you get. I like it.
  • magicJack
I checked it out today, June 19, 2008, and they had an offer for 5 years of service for an additional 59.95 TOTAL. Which means that for around $100.00, you get 6 years of service...is this really true? We're trying the 30 day trial...after that it's 39.95 plus state tax (Fl tax was 2.95) for one year. We'll see! Crazy if this is real.
  • Loving it
I live in NC and they had no numbers in my area but I just have my Grand Central # forwarded to it. AWESOME for $40 for 2 years. I have had it since oct 2007. Call quality is not quite as good as Vonage but is acceptable.
