Jun 18, 2008 -- Clark continues to be impressed by Mint.com

Clark's now been using Mint.com for several months and loves it. Here's how it works: You register all your accounts with them and they analyze your spending to tell you if you'll meet your financial goals.

After Clark's high praise for the free service, Christa finally checked out Mint and also loves it. She thinks it's even easier to use than Quicken or Microsoft Money.

In addition to tracking your spending, Mint will also send you simple reminders when your bills are due. One of Clark's credit card bills got lost in the mail, but Mint reminded him so he didn't have to get a late fee.

So the Internet just offers one more tool that can help you gain control over your spending. But don't overlook the old-fashioned envelope method or the notebook method of keeping track of your expenses.

What others are saying

  • my CU not on mint :(
Quorum FCU doesn't collaborate with Mint....bummer
  • Mint just purchased by Quicken
Well if you are trying to avoid Quicken, you can't. I just received an email from Intuit saying that Quicken just purchased Mint.com.
  • I love Mint
I've been using Quicken since about 1993, and use online banking, etc, etc. So, I'm not a newbie to computer-based financial software. Mint.com does a MUCH better job of helping me keep track of my spending than anything else I've been exposed to. I love it and wish I'd started using it long before.
  • Mint
It seems in the beginning everyone enjoyed and loved mint, but now it seems there are things that are not as pleasant. Has anything changed? I would like to use the Mint website, but I am worried about all the negative things. Any positve feedback from anyone lately?
  • Mint
Mint seems to push freecreditreport.com so I have decided not to try them. Emailed Mint & ask the relationship between the two companies & got a canned response stating that if I don't know my credit score I should use Mint's link to freecreditreport.com and Myfico.com. Not comfortable using a company that coerces users into purchases.

Also worried about hackers. NO Mint for me.

    Love your show Clark!
  • Mint
I think Mint is a great idea, but, I can't get my bank on it. I've sent neumerous e-mails and still no response. My bank is Tri-city National bank in Milwaukee WI. Wondering if anyone else has this problem. http://www.tcnb.com/
  • Mint stinks!
I agree that Mint is a really slick idea and has huge potential, but the site is extremely buggy.

Mint is unable to maintain a connection to my credit union accounts for longer than a day. When it loses connection (daily), I need to delete and re-add the account. This is not an acceptable workaround. Their Support has been no help with this issue, and it has been reported repeatedly for over two weeks.

Please be aware of this if you attempt to use Mint. I'm on the verge of abandoning it, if they can't get their site working.
  • Mint's a win
Been using Mint for a while now and have everything on there. My checking, savings, ccard, car loan, 401k and stock accounts. I love it, and the iphone app is just icing on the cake.

As to the worry of having accounts in one place, there's nothing to worry about as Mint is a read only program.

Even if worst case scenario (and probably more likely) your kid was able to get into your Mint account on the home PC. Well there's nothing that can be done there except to see where all the money is, you cant transfer or transact any of your accounts on Mint. So no worries all, mint's a win!
  • mint.com
I really wanted to find a way to connect me and my husband to our spending. That we both could see where our money was going. But it does not support my community credit union. So i am still doing by hand but its not sinking into my husband cause its not visable to him
  • Safety using mint.com
Is it safe to have all your financial info on one site? Any takes?...
  • Giving out passwords to accounts
Is their no concern in giving out passwords to your accounts?
  • Mint.com
if you bank with one of the giant mega-banks mint works just fine. with my community credit union-- it really isn't so effective. i'll keep at it-- and hopefully they'll get around to my credit union someday soon! -Tim Portland, Oregon
  • Mint
I love Mint....I have 2 credit union accounts and it does work with just one of them...but I think because the security requirements are so tight on one of the web sights, it may never work with both. I love the text messages it sends when I am over budget!
  • Where are the credit unions???
Mint is worthless to anyone who uses local credit unions for checking and savings. It's only useful if you do your business with large, national institutions.
  • Mint.com
I have also been using Mint.com, and I love it! Previously, I was using Quicken and found it hard to use and inaccurate. Mint is soooo much easier and they log your daily spending for you. Don't waste your time or money with Quicken!
  • 100% Minty!
LOVE Mint.com :o) I didn't realize where I spent my money until Mint helped me see it. I, too, was uneasy about signing up until I read their security. http://www.mint.com/features/security/
    THANKS CLARK!!!
  • thank you so much for saving us time and money!!!
    Dear Mr. Clark,
My Wife and I almost fell into the trap of online software for our budgeting and financial planning ( Quicken or MS). After readiing this we signed up with Mint and our Bank for online banking for free. Thank you so much for saving us a great deal of time, money and agrevation.
    Sincerly,
    Mike & Amy P
  • Mint.com
Easy sign-up and looking forward to using it today. Thanks!
  • Your website
I cannot find access to the pop up spyware and virus blockers that you referenced on one of your shows.
  • Budgeting
I need help budgeting and getting my debt down. I am 61 and am looking forward to retiring soon.

What is the old-fashioned evelope method or the notebook method of keeping track of expenses. You can email me at leables@yahoo.com. Thank you.
  • Mint.com
I joined today. This looks like it will be very useful. I'm excited.
  • Mint Security vs. Desktop software
The back end for Mint is Yodlee, and both are quite secure. If you download transactions in Quicken or other desktop financial software, you must provide account information. The only way around this is to enter every transaction manually, which some folks prefer. The reason Mint is free is because their profit is made if you sign up for one of the money-saving offers they feature. However, the offers are kept under a separate tab and aren't visible while working with Mint.

I am not promoting Mint, just giving the facts that I have from doing research while writing for About.com Financial Software.

p.s. Clark, you do a great service with this site and your show!
  • Mint.com
    Hello Clark,
Mint does look good but they want all my account passwords. That makes me very nervous. Quicken doesn't do this.
    What's up with this?
  • online accounts
Is this safe? Why is it free? Are they selling you something? I have my info on my bank online and feel it's safe. How does this site maintain safety?
  • Leaves out the little guys
I was really excited about trying Mint and Yodlee when I first heard about them. Unfortunately, neither carries all of my financial institutions. Since I use four banks regularly, it doesn't accurately reflect my spending and saving habits. Maybe within time I will be able to use them.
  • I Prefer Yodlee
I prefer Yodlee.com. They support many more vendors and it has even more features than Mint.com. Give it a try at www.yodlee.com
  • mint
i use have mint changed banks anow cant get mint add my credit union is there any other sites like mint? by the way love your show :)
  • Mint.com
I'm with Cindy, it sounds too good to be true. And, I'm a bit worried about placing all of my finacial info on the web for some creative hacker to find.
  • Mint.com is great, but
If they offered something as obvious as "upcoming transactions", and more control with budgeting, that would be the ultimate free management tool.
  • Mint.com
Sounds a bit scary to me--all my personal financial info plus my actual bank accounts all out there on the net for anyone to hack into---My question is why are they doing this for free? What is the hook that is going to come later on?
  • If mint isn't for you...
    Try buxfer .com
  • alternate financial software
I am leary about putting my account informaation either online or even on my computer, but wanted a budgeting program to help me keep spending under control.

I found You Need a Budget software online, and love it. I keep just a cash-flow budget on mine, but you can also use the option to link your accounts to it, and it will automatically input them into your budget. I paid $39.95 for it and it is worth every penney!
  • Mint .com
Doesn't giving all your account info go against everything you preach not to do over the internet.
  • Mint . Com
Clark Howard , Your a genius, i used info on Mint .com to get a cash back visa , to compliment my AMEX cash back Blue - Now i can make money anyplace i shop . Your a National Treasure ! Thanks ! jon denzin - Wisconsin
  • Mint
Tried it and love it. Thank you for the guidance.
  • MINT
    Hi Clark-

Thanks for the suggestion. I like the feel and speed of MINT.

    Regards,
    Dave
  • Sounds similar to BofA Portfolio tool
I do use the Portfolio tool made available with BofA online banking. They do not support all my accounts either. I will take a look at Mint.
  • Credit Union Unfriendly
Mint.com only works with the big mega-banks. All three of my credit unions (popular in our local area) did not come up in their search. That one fact rendered the site useless to me.
  • Worthless
I have been using the site for 8 months and find it to be worthless for me. I already use financial software and I am not on a budget. I spend too much time correcting the interpretation and classification errors. I pretty much have stopped using it.
  • Impressive
I am also weary of internet privacy but benefitted from inputting my credit card information only. That is where most of my spending occurs...no need to provide banking information for some folks. Oh..and I pay off the card balance in full each month. Great spending tracker!
  • Mint.com
    This website is the BOM!!!!!
Everyone who needs help with a budget should check it out
  • Mint
Been using it for 9 months. Great site and appears totally secure.
  • Mint
Vaporware! They did not have my credit union account available and ignored my requests to add it.
  • Clark receives credit card bills in the mail?
I'm surprised that he would take the risk of his paper statement being intercepted in the US Mail & misused (or misrouted). I receive no financial info in the mail; all electronic for safety, convenience, & resource reduction.
  • Mint is awesome, but scarey issues
After hearing the radio discussion, I went to Mint, entered the account information and was amazed. The ordeal of manually entering information was off-putting with Quicken and similar accounting programs but this couldn't be easier. It's amazingly useful...BUT I hadn't considered the danger of hackers who are here given the keys to the kingdom...maybe I should delete my account??!! Clark, please address this issue.
  • Not on your life
No outside firm gets the access information to my accounts. The risk is not worth the skimpy rewards.
  • well i don't know
This sounds like a very good system. However, I am not sure if I want to put all my financial information, passwords, etc. on one webserver. This server will be a sweet target for hackers. Any hacker who gets in will hit a major jackpot ...
Let's say one is registered on many online banking accounts. If one of the accounts gets hit, then he/she will have to deal with one major headache. However, if one puts many accounts in one place (=mint.com) and mint.com gets hacked - I can't imagine what kind of trouble ahead ...
