Jun 16, 2008 -- Credit unions offer the nearest thing to a free lunch

It's often been said that there are no free lunches. But Clark thinks that credit unions are darn pretty close. This wonderful option is available to most adults, but only about 1 in 3 actually is a member.

What is a credit union? It's like a bank that you own as a shareholder. There's a nominal fee to become a member and then it's like you go to the mezzanine with a ton of great products at your disposal!

For example, Clark's credit union offers car loans at 3.9% interest to those with good credit. Home equity loans are available at 3.95% for 5 years.

Credit unions may have rip-off charges for overdrafts and the like, but they're usually lower than elsewhere. When it comes to credit cards, most credit unions offer Visa and MasterCard with interest rates that are about 20% lower than the giant monster mega-banks.

The one thing you don't get with credit unions is convenience. They typically don't have as many branches as the giant monster mega-banks.

Yet more and more people are turning their backs on the banks. In fact, banks only control about 12% of our collective wealth. The bulk of it is with stock brokers, mutual fund companies, credit unions, etc. For example, Merrill Lynch offers a cash management account for the wealthy.

Not sure if you're eligible for a credit union? Visit CUNA.org to find out.

What others are saying

  • Credit Union blaaas
I was okay with my credit union, until they sent me a letter last week stating the two closest branches to me are closing, among two others, and will be opening five more branches two hours north of me. They will no longer be near me if I need the branch. I am changing credit unions.
  • HSBC Direct
Is the hsbc direct any different from any other saving account.
  • CUNA.org
I visited this website and received an alert from AT&T stating accessing this website could lead to possible identity theft. Anyone else received this message when they accessed this website?
  • credit unions
I would like to learn what CU JJ in Oregon uses. We live in OR and are looking for a good savings rate.
  • credit union
Mine in Oregon has savings rates better than all banks (including some of the online banks) that I've researched.
  • Branches
    Hi Clark:
I belong to a CU in New York. They have one branch, BUT there is shared banking. All across the country, they'll tell you of another CU where you cd make deposits & withdrawals from your CU! with no fees!
  • Credit Card
Pentagon Federal Credit Union Offers a Credit Card that gives MONTHLY rebates. Currently they are 1.25% for any purchase. 2% for groceries. 5% for gasoline purchases at the pump. A rebate is calculated and posted to your monthly statement.
  • Home Equity loan rates
Can I search credit unions across the country to see who has the lowest Home Equity Loan rate?
  • Credit Unions Rock!
I've been banking with our credit union for over 20 years. I think I've actually had to go to my credit union once in that entire time. They offer the best in customer service, they don't nickel and dime you to death on fees. Yes, their interest rates aren't the best but for things like my emergency fund, I just put them in an ING direct account. I have to use a bank to handle my grandparent's finances and I just HATE, HATE, HATE them!! Monthly account fees, fees for deposit slips, fees for this, fees for that and customer service, now that's a joke. It used to be hard to become a member of a credit union. Now credit union membership is very easy to come by. You will be pleasantly surprised.
  • Not all CU's the same
I detest my CU (Servus CU in Canada.) The banking rates are "competitive" but still qualify as gouging in my book.

They treat me like a deadbeat. They take satisifaction in having me "beg" for small personal loans, regardless of over a decade of tenure and spotless credit.

I now ONLY do chequing through my CU. For everything else through ING Direct, HSBC Direct, and I shop around for personal loans if I need them.
  • Credit Unions are great. I have a credit card with mine that has a 5.5% interest rate. Can't beat that anywhere else. Loan interest rates are the best as well.
  • lukewarm on CU's
I must say I'm lukewarm on Credit Unions. I've moved most of my money out of mine because I can get almost twice as high of interest rate on savings with my online bank/brokerage than I do at my CU. My CU seems to partner with high fee/high commission investment brokers for anyone wanting to invest money through the CU (no wonder those hired brokers drive from CU to CU in hummers!). I do admit the CU loan rates are decent and the account fees for various things are quite a bit cheaper or offer some services for free compared to those of a commercial national bank.
  • I love my credit union
I love my credit union. Everyone should join one. Mine was free to join. If you aren't part of one, call a few and ask about membership requirements. You might be surprised to find that you are affiliated one way or another. Don't be discouraged by their name.
