Jun 12, 2008 -- New websites for FREE people and public records searches

Clark often wishes he had a dollar for every time someone asked him about ZabaSearch.com, the website where you can search public records to locate a person. The info on the site is not always accurate or up to date, and Clark compares using ZabaSearch.com to being a private investigator tracking down leads.

Case in point: When executive producer Christa searched her name, she got a bunch of old addresses and also some listings for a woman who shares the same moniker in San Francisco.

Now ZabaSearch.com has spawned several imitators such as Wink.com and Spock.com. Clark isn't sharing this info to make you paranoid; he just wants you to be informed about the public info that may be out there about you.

What others are saying

  • clark, your site sucks
Sorry Clark. I find the same about Zaba as other commenters. Frankly, there is nothing free on the net that doesn't suck personal information out of you to sell to other vultures. I've been a listener to your show over the years and when I go to your site for followups I find it cluttered, confusing and of little help. For starters you should lighten up on the google advertisements. Especially since they are not endorsed by you. Your site looks like a google poster board. I'm sure I'm not the first to say it but have you considered making it more viewer friendly and with less ads? Just a thought.
  • 08/25/09 show dealing with neighbors lawn
    Clark,
On 08/25/09, you made a suggestion to a neighbor to cut the grass herself. When you deal with local gov. a phone call never happened. EMAIL the director and yourself. Give it a couple days. No response EMAIL The director, yourself and county/city manager. If no response in few a days take the emails to next council meeting and during the part of citizens to be heard Address the council with the emails and no responses. This will call the parties on the "carpet". The problem will be addressed then.

  • Intelius (and all its aliases)
Sneaky indeed. I wanted a phone number. Did a search. Ended up on Intelius. Site claimed it would provide report with various items INCLUDING phone number. Clicked on $0.95 charge. Report did NOT have phone number. Couldn't be bothered to chase after $0.95. Got e-mail thanking me for business and confirming my free identity protect membership - NO MENTION anywhere of fees to be charged. 1 week later, $19.95 pops up on credit card. Went back to see how it happened. Everything is hidden as much as they can hide it. Called "customer service" number. Message telling me about high volume of calls (that's every time, all day and night) and "more than 10 minutes". After about 9 minutes, music stops then silence for 10 minutes. They assume most people will think they've been cut off and hang up. Eventually, 19 minutes later, got through. Guy tells me I committed myself to a contract. Told him entire contract was invalidated by the lack of promised info on the report. Got my money back. Took over an hour. These people are not just sneaky, they are involved in DECEPTIVE PRACTICES. Their entire business revolves around lying and tricking people. May they be the victim of a major class action lawsuit and go under. I wish.
  • Sneaky
I had an emergency need to find out the number of someone, and there was a "special" of one report for 99¢. Well, I mad certain to read ALL conditions and got my report.

    First, it was inaccurate, totally.

Second, although I never, NEVER, N E V E R signed up to or agreed to it, I'm now getting charged for an identity protection plan to the tune of $19.95 a month!

Now that I've done a little searching, it seems that this is a big and well known rip off by Intelius... I didn't notice it last month, and although it ought to be easy getting one charge removed, I hear it is possible to get them all, but it takes persistence. I'm giving it a go. But ZabaSearch inevitably leads to Intelius.
  • Not Actually Free
As pointed out, these sites are not actually free. All of them involve a payment, no matter what you're looking for. Most of them are just front-ends for Intelius, which charges an awful lot without having any idea how much information you're paying for.

I do not understand why these sites are allowed to advertise themselves as "free" when in fact, they are not, and clearly so?
  • removing info from zaba
How can I have some messages I left for someone removed? Do I need to remove my account all together and the messages I sent will also be removed? Let me know and I'll do that.
  • Not free..
ZaBA and Wink were useless. Only thing you got for free was the name of my Parents. Everything else had to be paid for. Spock.com however did not post a lot of personal information, but they did give a great deal of websites I have commented on, was a member of, was signed up for, and other free information that could a great tool for finding someone. Or sharing secrets they may not have wanted known. The site is down, so I couldn't extend the search to see what else they offered.
  • People Search
What do you think about civilrecords.org?
  • unlisted phone on Zaba
When you give your unlisted phone number to companies like pizza delivery, they sell your name and phone number. That's how unlisted phone numbers can show up in searches like Zaba
  • PAY to get "deleted?!"
ZabaSearch offers you the "option" to pay $20 to have your records deleted. Uh, yeah... right. Either it's a public record or it's not. Serving it up online and then charging to opt out is blackmail, not "value-added" service.
  • free public record web sites
it says FREE, but then wants you to pay a fee. how is that free?
  • public record searches
Even more horrifying than Zaba, Wink and Spock is
    privateeye.com
It includes former addresses, aliases/nicknames/other names, names of relatives - all on the 'free' search page. You can pay for more info. You can sort of opt yourself out, but they don't completely guarantee that they will refuse to sell your info even if you follow their opt-out rules and request that they don't.
    Yikes!
  • news letter
Clark you'r news letter is Great thanks
  • Lillith02@hotmail.com
No more useful than any of the previous 'people-search' sites. Gives U the same info U can get out of the phone book. Also, extremely inaccurate. My own search gives 6 previous addresses. I have only had 2, AND it states that I am 30 YEARS older than I really am. Anything more spec. costs $$$$. So Not Free...
  • public record searches...
Try plugging your land line into Google....I did and my name, address AND MAP to my home pops up!!! My number is not unlisted, but....it's almost scary.

  • Zabasearch - unpublished information
I used this site and found my unpublished telephone number there. Is this legal? Can my telephone provider do this? How can I have it removed?
  • ZabaSearch
With my full name... my address & phone # showed up! Which IS terrible. It says that they would delete my info for 20.-. Can you trust this site to give them the $ w/credit card # ?
  • ZabaSearch
Seems like everything gets redirected to Intelius which requires $$ for anything beyond actually finding that records exist that are attached to a name. Not much different than any of the other personal search sites in that regard.
  • Zaba. , etc....
Tried them/must be doing something wrong. Kept sending me to "inteliss" which wanted money. so much for free!!!!
  • people searches
find info ok but to see it still costs money so not really free
  • eye glasses
Here is some info from Clark Howard
  • Free People finders
I was rather dissappointed. I couldn't find myself on any of the three sites.
  • Find
Find information on Ardith Ann Beers
  • zabasearch
I agree big waste of time. Info not inaccurate.I also would like to be remove because it's very misleaing info. And they want $$$$ for this..non of these web sites are "Free"
  • Search to find people
try Privateeye.com. Found my former boyfriends!!
  • records
Hey Clark, I love the emails & updates from you. Just wanted to say, none of the above listed anything accurate for myself. BUT I WOULD RATHER IT THAT WAY!

    Thanks!
  • zabasearch
Is there anyway to remove ones name from this kind of information
  • Pickup Debris
There already IS a law. It is called "Failure to Secure a Load." In most states, the driver of any vehicle is required to secure the load in such a manner it cannot shift, or otherwise come off the vehicle. In the case of yard debris, the load should be tarped. Most police officers will not give tickets for this, but in the case of ladders or mattresses comming off th vehicle, they will. That is, if they actually see it come off.
  • zaba search, spock and wink
There is really no difference between these, they all use "intelius" as their search engine. Intelius is woefully inaccurate
  • ZabaSerch.com
Useless....last address shown was fro 1990!
  • Pickup Truck debris causing injury.
I have proposed for a number of years that there "Ought to be a Law" that all open truck beds should be covered by 1"x1" mesh screen so as to prevent debris from leaving the truck bed. I seen hundreds of pickup over the years traveling on the freeway with everything from mattresses to plastic bags being dragged by the force of wind out onto the highways. I think there is a strong cultural thingy that if I don't throw debris out of you truck or don't see it leave the bed of the truck, then it's OK and not my fault. So putting paper, soda cans, and other debris in the bed of a pickup truck to eventually be blown onto the highway is OK because - I guess because it's Mother Nature doing the littering.

In Sacramento its very common to hear about the per verbal LADDER on the highway.
  • public records searches
    Useless
  • Genealogy
These sites are boons for genealogists to help find relatives.
  • public records searches
What options does one have if there is incorrect information in these public search tools? This is kind of alarming, but thanks for bringing attention to it for us.
  • Zaba, Wink, etc.
Be careful. A lot of these sites just track back to Intelius.com, the pay ($50 !) per view website that gives you only slightly more meaningful information about people you might search.
