Jun 12, 2008 -- McDonald's franchisees revolt against dollar menu

Clark is a devout fast-food consumer. Years ago, he even earned the nickname "The Carryout Kid" from his brother. Today, the penny-pinching guru favors the value menus at the major chains. But right now McDonald's has a civil war on its hands with franchisees upset about the dollar menu.

The franchisees are trying to pressure corporate to change the name of the dollar menu to the "McValue Menu," similar to what Wendy's did. With costs increasing, franchisees are not able to make a profit when they sell an item for a dollar. So The Wall Street Journal reports that some have already raised the prices on select dollar items. For example, they're charging $1.09 or $1.29 for a double cheeseburger.

Clark saw someone order 2 double cheeseburgers (at $1 each) and a complimentary cup of water at McDonald's -- a sure sign of inflation. Franchisees lose money every time that happens.

The dollar as a magic price point is under assault. What will the dollar stores do? Chinese goods cost more because of international inflation. They could raise prices, but the "two-dollar store" doesn't have the same ring to it!

Meanwhile, beware of hidden price increases at the dollar stores. Clark was recently shopping for shaving cream and noticed they shrunk the size but charged the same price.

What others are saying

  • We're talking price not health aspect
At McD's occasionslly they will advertise a 44 ounce drink for 59Cents or 69Cents. This drink is larger than a "large" drink and cheaper than the "small" drink. The order takers will not offer the lower priced drink if you order a "large" or a "small" both of which are more expensive but give you less beverage.
  • registers increasing price, menu board shows old price
i have had 2 experiences in the past 2 weeks where i order something from the menu board (at drive thru), and the total comes up higher than it should be. when this is pointed out, the manager reluctantly makes the change, but seems like this is something they are trying to sneak by without much notice.

PLEASE POST THE CORRECT PRICES !!!
  • No dollar menu, I'm gone
With the dollar menu, even fast food is getting too expensive!
  • Great Fast Food Bargains
I have tried all of the major fast food "cheap" meals and find the $1 Whopper Jr at Burger King to be a great value, and tastes good too. Their iced tea sucks as it is not brewed but made from a powder concentrate.
  • Fast food good but not heathy
Fast food is what i buy now cause everything else is to expensive, But i do have a lot of Mcds salds and such.
  • wal-mart
Wal-mart does little things too. They only sell "no-rub" contact lens solution and not the rub multi solution. MY CONTACTS WEAR OUT FASTER WITH THE NO RUB SOLUTION. So I have to buy more contacts more often. Except I go elsewhere and buy the solution I want.

They also don't sell the plug in bug repellents. So I have to buy more traditional can bug spray. Which I don't. I go to lowe's or home depot and get the plug in repellents.
  • I'm P-Oed at McDonalds!
I went to a local McDs to buy a couple of _plain_ biscuits. When they rang them up the price was $1.59 each! That's crazy so I told the cashier to give me two sausage biscuits ("only" $1 each) minus the sausage. She grumbled and fumed, but at least I got what I wanted at a sensible price. What the heck are these managers thinking? When a plain biscuit doubles in price do they really expect people to not notice or care?
  • Even worse than the reduced sizes, many products are being "cheaped out" -- some companies are intentionally lowering the quality and eliminating features or ingredients to maintain a price point. In food, I'd rather pay 25 cents more than get the nearly inedible stuff being offered at Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc., under their value menus.
  • yum
I've been doing the double cheese trick for a while. two double cheese burgers. take them apart. put them both together.
big sandwich with a lot of meat. my friend gets his with "mac" sauce. best cheap burgers ever!
  • Fast Food a good deal?
Even for a dollar, why risk your health? It is alot less expensive in the long run to speand a bit more money on real food, even organics, and spend the time to cook at home than to spend thousands on health care when cheap fast food eventually catches up with you
