Jun 10, 2008 -- Are gas additives for real?

The Consumer Action Center has been getting a lot of questions about fuel economy boosters. During the energy crises of the '70s, the same thing happened with people selling pills and additives for your gas tank. The EPA now says that you shouldn't fall for these ploys. Out of 100 gas-saving devices tested, only 6 gave a tiny improvement in fuel economy -- and even those were nothing to write home about.

The reality is that you have to do the simple things to get better fuel economy. So unload your trunk, keep your tires properly inflated and slow down out on the road.

Years ago, gas pumps couldn't "read" prices above 99 cents/gallon. So when the price went to a $1/gallon, you actually had to look at a conversion sheet provided at the pump to figure out what you owed.

Now, what's old is new again. Some gas stations around the country can't read above $3.99/gallon. These stations may be forced to change their pumps at great expense, or we'll have to go back to charts on the pumps in states that permit it.

One final thought: There's an assumption that the gas prices we have today are the new floor and we can only go higher. That's called "inertia bias." But economics doesn't work that way. Prices could decline again, but who knows to what level. All bets are off, though, if there's a terrorist attack or war.

What others are saying

  • CW40
I have heard on Ed Schultz program that CW40 will increase gas mileage. I wish you could check on that before I invest $30.
  • Hydrogen generators
I am building one called "Smack's Booster" from HydrogenGarage.com. I have a friend who has built 8 similar ones and increased his mileage from around 16 to over 30. I don't think I can get quite that much but I'm looking for 50% improvement in my T-100 from 22mpg to 33!
  • Gas Additives
Oh, yes there is an awesome additive that does exactly what it says it will do. You add it to the gas tank and the oil. I improved my MPG but since I have a blown head gasket it wasn't as much as I could have improved. But I am on my 3rd oil change and the last oil change I'd gone 5,642 miles since changing it. The oil still wasn't very dark, but since I have a '79 Malibu I like to keep things as clean as possible. Check out Ethosfr.com if you want to see some great results with newer cars. Anywhere from 40% to 70% increase in MPG.
Enjoy your programs and updates! Thank you very much!
  • Car running on water
What about those ebooks that show you how to run your car on water AND gas? One sells for $47 and the other $97. Has anyone had actual experience with either of them?
  • Acetone
I read the info on acetone and watched the online vids that are popping up. I tested it during three tankfulls at the rate of 4oz per 10 gallons. I experienced no appreciable difference in fuel economy. I think they might have been trying to sell the MPG computer that hooks up to your OBDII port... I have had no adverse effects of the experiment. Before the tests I checked with our local fleet services technicians who verified the acetone would not damage the internal engine components. They assured me by letting various parts and o-rings sit in a beaker of pure acetone for a week, the parts didn't appear to have any noticeable damage. They had fun placing bets on the outcome. Overwhelming odds against any improvement even with the claim of reduced surface tension.
  • Acetone
I don't think I'd be putting acetone in my gas. Acetone can eat up rubber gas lines.
  • Acetone in the gas 2 oz per 10 gallons
Pure acetone works for me - also a 5lbs of air to the recommended - use non platinum plugs setvate 25,000 and high quaiity filters and really good racing oil - I get about 10-12% better milage.
  • gas saving product
i purchased a product online Ethos, an additive to your oil and gas, that is suppose to save gas. it was designed to help with the smog problem in CA. the product works, i added it to a tank, drove 60mph interstate, and clocked 40mpg on a Saturn SL2 whick under the same conditions had gotten 36 mpg. however, this is a MLM companyand I cannot get anyone to respond to my email or phone calls. supposedly you will get 4 vouchers for $25 gas per voucher, but who knows, i may never see them! company is out of canada as ethos environmental, powerful life is another name out of canada. has anyone done any business with this company?
  • Adding Acetone to Gas?
I have heard many people say that adding about 2-4 oz per tankful of 100% pure Acetone will improve fuel effiecency.

Could your staff test some of these things that people are talking about online?
