Jun 06, 2008 -- Many options for your FREE credit score

There was only a smattering of news recently about TransUnion losing a lawsuit over illegally selling personal info. As part of the settlement, the credit bureau will be required to give you free access to your credit score and other info for half a year. This decision will affect 160 million people.

Traditionally, people have had to pay for their credit scores. If this TransUnion settlement happened a year ago, Clark would have made a big deal about it. But there a couple of reasons why it doesn't matter as much today.

First, there's the government-sanctioned AnnualCreditReport.com that allows you to get your credit report once a year for nada. Second, there are already a number of ways to get your credit score for free.

Some credit card operators, such as Washington Mutual, will give you your Fair Isaac score every month as part of their marketing efforts. (Editor's note: WaMu is discontinuing this practice effective March 1, 2009.)

You can also use Quizzle.com to get your Experian credit score for free. Other free sites to try include CreditKarma.com and Credit.com.

These 3 "dot coms" all give it away in the hopes that you'll buy the products and services they're trying to market. But there's no obligation to buy anything at all. (Editor's note: Quizzle.com is owned by Quicken Loans.)

Why should you care about your credit standing? Even if you don't need any credit, a mistake on your report or score will trigger higher insurance rates. You could also be turned down for a job. So check it out!

What others are saying

  • Free Equifax Fico Score
Update to below comment. Here's a little more accurate link http://www.myfico.com/Products/ScoreWatch/Description.aspx
  • Free Equifax Fico Score
You can get your free Equifax FICO score at myfico.com. Get the 30 day trial but be sure to cancel before it's up to avoid being charged anything. This score will different than the Risk Score you receive if you order your report by mail directly from Equifax. Great tool to analyze exactly what's impacting your score. I think their updates may run a few days behind the most current data from the bureaus though. Anywho...it's free so why not give it a try.
  • quizzle
quizzle gave me a bogus Experian score (60 points lower than my real one)and then tried to sell me "tools" to raise it for $75. I bought my score/report from Experian AND got a free one from TransUnion, both verified my real score.
  • Easy to use
I'm thinking about moving and was worried about my score. Quizzle & CK were within 3 pts. I'm feeling better about starting the moving process. Both sites VERY easy to use and interesting tools available.
  • Credit Score Information
Thanks a bunch for all your help.
  • Great
These web sites are the easiest credit report sites to navigate.
  • Credit Karma
Be careful, the credit karma score is easy to obtain, but its based on their 900 point scale, not the 850. So while its likely to be in the ballpark, your exact score will differ.
  • quizzle
quizzle wouldnt let me continue w/o entering income/house data, so i simply filled in bogus info and got thru it. all i was interested in was the credit report/score -dont think 'skipping' the income/house sections would affect that (??) if i'm wrong please let me know! it did affect the quizzle score/rating - but dont care.
  • quizzle
i just did quizzle - fast and easy. thx for the link
  • Good site
I found it very illuminating and the price is right.
  • Credit score
Quizzle asked too much info that I didn't want to share ... Income, mortgage amt, etc. Used CreditKarma and was able to get score without divulging more than I cared to.
  • Quizzle 4 Shizzle
Just pulled my cbr on Quizzle. Great website, with good solid info. ++ Thanks Clark, and user comments
  • Credit Karma and Quizzle
Both, CK and Quizzle worked just fine for me. Both were FREE and fast (less then 5 minutes). CK did ask for my SSN but that's okay. Even though my scores were low, there was a 1 point difference between the two sites. I will definitely keep using them. Thanks Clark!
  • Credit karma
Credit Karma worked fine, Quizzle did not
  • Quizzle v/s CreditKarma
CreditKarma is great- they have a very close to accurate score, and you have the option to update it daily (though it won't change most days). Quizzle's AI uses closed accounts in estimating my score based on their soft-pull of my credit report. So, it added over 100 points to my score (it's actually close to 620, but they state it is near 750!) I rely mostly on creditkarma to get fairly accurate updates without paying for an actual report.
  • FICO Score
I've now gone to all three sites via annualcreditreport.com, and got to see my credit reports for free. But where do you get to see your FICO Score for free? If you pay to each of the "3", they'll send you their credit score for me, but not the FICO Score. Where do I get that?

    PRB
  • Quizzle
Works great, thanks for the recommendation.
  • Equifax free annual credit report
I tried getting my free quifax credit report online but it stated that thr was a problem and I had to call in. I called and only got menu options w/a request for $11.00 and no option to speak w/a live person. I was able to get my Transunion and Experian on line.
  • 7 year period?
    Hi,
I listen to you all the time!
Thanks for all the great info.
Is there a way to get things taken off your credit reprot faster than 7 years?
  • Quizzle
Dan, you did not take the time to scroll down and see your credit score, you own Mr.Clark Howard a just due apology,NOW! and stop trying to find things wrong, this man, Mr.Clark Howard is not God nor does he claim to be, which means he can make mistakes, but Dan you need to take some responsibility and R-E-A-D.THANK YOU, Mr.Clark Howard for all you do.
  • This site is GREAT!
I just used Quizzle...it is great!! Very informative!
  • Thank-you Clark!
Quizzle was fast, easy and totally free...Just like the rest of the nation...I feel compelled to work towards my own economic recovery! Thank-you Clark!
  • Credit Reports
Have had several inquiries on credit report due to house hunting. Score really down. Want to order credit reports to review, but by ordering a report, will this also affect our credit score.
  • credit score not FICO score
While the information shared by these sites can be helpful and is fundamentally sound, you need to know, the score you receive is not the FICO score. myFICO.com is best source for FICO scores.
  • Quizzle & Credit Karma
Despite the negative comments, I tried both Quizzle & CK and very impressed with how detailed they were. Very accurate & helpful
  • refinance
I did not know this was associaterd with quicken loans
  • Quizzle
Quizzle was quick, less than two minutes. It is absolutely free; no credit card account info was required. I recommend it.
  • Quizzle
    In response to Dan, you may not have scrolled down far enough. I just got the following ;
    88 of 100 Quizzle score
    credit grade A (91%)
    credit score from Experian 712
I am assuming that the Experian score is the FICO score.
  • Quizzle Credit Report
It's a lie. Quizzle did not provide a credit score used by lenders. They provided a "97 out of 100" score internal to Quizzle. Come on Clark, do the right thing... direct viewers to a useful site.
  • Quizzle
Took me less than 3 min to do the quizzle. Was free. Did have to tell income, but that does not give them anything... Would recommend quizzle. Thanks Clark!!
  • I just got my Quizzle score and it was pretty painless. Lots of good info though.
  • Credit Karma and Quizzle
I did not like that Credit Karma asks for your social, maybe that's the only way they can look it up? But it made me nervous. I backed out of the Quizzle request when they kept asking for info on my home. Had I answered all those questions, would they then hound me to get a Quicken loan instead? Can anyone respond or should I go to a message board? Thanks.
  • Quizzle
I thought Quizzle was great. Easy to use, no hard sell, gave me the score and recommendations. I will go back.
  • Quizzle.com
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE IT! I have a fraud alert at all credit bureaus. I went to quizzle.com-setup an account-gave them a call (b/c of my alert) they asked questions and BAM! My credit score..the whole nine (online)!! I love ya Clark! Your tha' man!
  • credit karma,credit.com and quizzle
quizzle is a good site.they gave me my score instantly. the other 2, on the other hand would not give me my score. the message was i have a fraud alert on my account. if i do, i did not put it there. annual credfit report.com will only give me my score by mail.
  • Quizzle vs. CreditKarma
I have to disagree with most of the people on here. I think Quizzle and CK are great sites. CK gave my score as 752 and Quizzle as 749, so there is no problem there. Great sites Clark, keep up the work!
  • Quicken loan
For those of you who are planning to refinance your home, be extremely careful if you are thinking of refinancing with Quicken loan. Do your research and see what the customers are saying about this company. I know from experience that this is one to steer free and clear of unless you just want to refi and not care about anything else. See what the customers and those who used to work there have to say. Shocking!
  • More credit card ripoffs
I pay my Chase credit card bill online, and I knew I had made a payment for more than the minimum on March 4. Then I saw my statement and it said I owed a payment on March 30. I called and was told they switched the "cycle."" and that was for April. I asked if I paid my April bill on April1, would I be late and would they raise my rate. YES! If I paid my April bill ON the first of the month I would be late. And my rate would go up to 26%. Then they told me as long as I paid the April bill in March I would be fine and my next payment wouldn't be until May... well, guess what? I just looked and my May payment is due April 30. If I had believed them, and paid my May bill on the 1st of May I'd be LATE. WHY do they get away with this????
  • Karma vs Quizzle
I found that both of these sites were really user-friendly, however, CreditKarma gave my score as 740 and Quizzle came in at 667. I realize that they pull from different bureaus, but with a spread of 73 points, I really question the reliability of the entire process.
  • my credit score
why is/has my credit score gone down.ive made all my payments on time and since paid off 2 nd morgage and all credit card debt.they did not lower my avaliable credit im just confused
  • Free Credit Report and Score(s)
I wish people could/would read! When you go to Quizzle.com the site clearly states that you only will see your "new" credit score from EXPERIAN every 6 Months. On CreditKarma.com you are able to "refresh" and see your TRANSUNION score every day. These are 2 different reporting agencies therefore 2 different scores. I love both sites. SOOOO many people are complaining about the discrepancies in their scores not knowing that the scores are AGAIN coming from 2 different reporting agencies. Please READ! This is especially to the 24 year old "THE PRYNCE". Thank you.
  • WaMu (Washington Mutual Card & Credit Info
I went to Wa Mu on 3/2 and they said the free credit score every month on your statement is no history. That progam ended this month with the Chase buy out of Wa Mu.
  • Credit card rates
I have also received notice from Capitol one that they are raising my rate. I have been at 7.99 for over 10 years and now they want 17.99 with a default rate of 29.99 (like I would ever pay that). My credit score is above 830 so it is not due to credit problems. They simply state that "due to the current economic conditions and the length of time I have been at 7.99" they can longer honor that rate. They at least have given me the chance to decline the change which I plan to do. I will also be closing the money market account I have with Capitol one (on which they have lowered the rate) and moving it to a company that appreciates my business. Let's see how they like that.
  • Credit cards *&^%*@#$!!!
Now I realize all the credit cards are raising there APR's...one raised 1/2%, another raised 5%(which I called and got it dropped down to a 2% raise...worth a try guys, mine was HSBC), but Capital One raised my rate a full 10%!!! I called and they not only wouldn't budge, but were arrogant about it! The guy, named Aaron, actually said "its in your agreement that we can raise it at any time. I don't know why you're surprised OR upset. Now I think you should apologize to me for calling here and wasting my time." Oh yeah, he SAID THAT! I asked him if Capital One made him trade his soul in for his first paycheck....
  • Washington Mutual credit score No More!
Washington Mutual is changing hands and will now be Chase Morgan. They will no longer offer the free credit score. I should know...I have a card and will miss it!
  • Credit Scores
How come consumer credit scores are always higher than a mortgage companies? How do you know if you want to apply for a loan if the information you get is not correct?
  • Accurate credit report
If you really want to precise credit scores - then go to FICO - these are free options that give you a very good idea of where you are at score-wise.
  • LISTEN to what clark says..... IT IS FREE
Alright - look - many of you are saying that you got ripped off by these sites. Listen carefully to Clark - he said that you can get your CREDIT REPORT (not score) from the annualcreditreport.com for free (once a year for all three agencies) - this is correct - you do NOT give a credit card number.

If you order their service of credit watch or want to purchase the credit score for each agency there is a cost on that website. LOOK before you go clicking around and providing credit card number people...

Credit Karma is 100% free and gives you the transunion score daily. If you do not click on their advertisers (that's how that pay for the site people) then it's a great site.

Quizzle - one time, credit report and score - I believe they let you refresh that every 6 months.

None of these cost money people - thank Clark for sharing it with you and use your eyes to not purchase other services on those sites... unbelievable that you all just pass our you credit card numbers and do not pay attention before you go click happy on a site.

=) Thanks Clark - I've got your back!
  • credit scores
You really need to address some of these issues here. if you have a site you need to eliminate ALL sites that are failing us!
  • No score if credit frozen
You're out of luck getting a credit score from Quizzle or CreditKarma if you have followed Clark's advice to freeze your credit. Unfreeze your credit first before using these sites.
  • love ya clark
    THANKS!!!
i used creditkarma.com for the score
    and annualcreditreport.com for the report
it was quick and easy and FREE!!!
    love ya
  • Thanks!
Thanks Clark! We just pulled our credit reports with annualcreditreport and got our scores from quizzle. So easy and no cost! You just have to read before you click on anything. Thanks!
  • Credit Scores
I will not bother with Clark Howard's "free" credit scores. Sounds like another rip-off to get personal data and jump you through hoops. So much for "advocates" and "ombudsmen". We're all in this alone.
  • FREE CREDIT SCORE
Yeah, right. If you are entitled to a free credit report why can't they just include your score with it. Why make us jump through hoops for it.?? Yet, if it is so important why are so many people in credit card debt. ? It don't count for nothing until the credit card companies ruin it for you. Then, when you need it for a house purchase it's too late the greedy credit card offers have succeeded in setting you up for failure.
  • Credit Score
Nothing is Free you still have to give a dollar off a Debt just to get it. As for your credit score can;t open links WHY?
  • Hm...
I only just realized after using Quizzle since 9/2008 that it never updates! The score you see now is the one you'll always see no matter what your credit situation is. Its been saying 720 for months now.
I used CreditKarma since then also and it said 722, but I found they had an update feature which I used to find out I was now at 739! Not fantastic, I know, but how many other 24 year olds have anything less than crappy credit?

  • Quizzle overestimated my score
While it was exciting (for a moment) to see a high credit score on Quizzle, my actual score from the same credit Bureau (Experian) was 75 points lower. Be aware that Quizzle's results may be overly rosy.
  • Quizzle.com
I am very happy, my score is very good 823, out of a possible 841(?). Thanks for the the info on quizzle.com!!
  • Experian providing different data?
I belong to freecreditreport.com which uses Experian, and my credit score is 661 (which has not changed for several months). However, when I typed my info into Quizzle (which also uses Experian), my score is 705. I don't understand...
  • Credit Score
I used Quizzle and CreditKarma. My score on Quizzle was 50 points higher than CreditKarma. It is great to be able to access this information.
  • Credit Scores
I visited Quizzle and Credit Karma. Both are very close, within about 10 points of each other. I think this is great that we can now see our score before we go apply for credit or buy a home.
  • quizzle.com
I don't know what people are complaining about. I just went to quizzle and found my score: it's 768. I didn't have to buy anything, but they did ask me to fill out a form (name, address, no cc info requested)
  • Credit cards with $1 charges
Clark, you are the best. Lately, I have found two credit cards where several $1 charges have shown up and a third had been used to rack up gasoline charges in the UK. I have called and reported these charges and the credit card companies continue to tell me that it is not all that big of a deal. They canceled the old ones and re-issued new cards. Do I have to be concerned with identity theft? I ran your suggested three free credit checks and everything looks okay. Should I purchase a rider on my home owners to protect against identity theft as an additional pre-caution or am I over reacting?
  • Credit Report
Clark, you are the best. Quizzle was great and I got a free report from Experian and disupted a charge online from 8 years ago from Macys that never existed. Thanks!
  • Quizzle
Quizzle worked very well for me. It gave me my Experian credit report with no problem.
  • Credit Score
I tried to you one of your links to view my credit score but annual credit repart to equaifax said I could not prosses it for certain reasons.
  • Credit Freeze
I would like to use credit karma, but my transunion credit file is frozen and karma uses transunion. They said I could do a temporary thaw, but I'd rather not.
  • CreditKarma's credit simulator is worthless
Starting with a 667 credit score (fair bit not great), Almost no option will increase the credit score. Paying off all credit cards only raised it 9 points. On the other hand declaring bankruptcy increased it to 700. Is someone trying to tell me something?
  • Credit.com is NOT free
Credit.com does not provide "free" credit information without purchasing a product.
  • CREDITKARMA.COM
    HI CLARK,
I AM YOUR REGULAR LISTENER LAST 2 YEARS, I REALLY THIS SHOW. MY QUESTION IS THIS THAT I CHECKED MY CREDIT SCORE FROM ALL THREE FIRMS. BUT EVERY TIME THEY SHOW DIFFERENT SCORE, I MEAN WHY.
    THANKS FOR THE HELP.
  • Go Clark Go Clark GO!
Your are wonderful, informative, and a blessing....Thanks for all the information regarding credit and scam artists. Continue with your successful investigations Clark!!!! You are the best!!! Due to your informative information regarding credit scores and reports I have now successfully obtained all the deserving information that I am intitled to absolutely free!!.

    Thanks for all you do,

    N.S.
    Sweet Score
  • creditreport.com
In early June, listening to your show, I incorrectly went to creditreport.com instead of annualcreditreport.com and gave my credit card # for "verification". Now, I have been charged $12.95/mo. for credit watch, which I did not want. A word to listeners, "listen carefully to Clark" or you may get duped.
  • Removing authorized user hurt user's credit?
Does removing my daughter as an authorized user on my credit card hurt her credit score? She and I have great payment records.
  • Credit Report
FYI Tried annual credit report. Have just done equifax so far but to get a score you have to pay but the report is free.
    Very helpful.
I kept seeing the television ad for this website. And I wondered if it is legitimate.
  • Affect score
    From Their FAQ:

Will using Credit Karma lower my credit score?

No. Credit Karma is making the credit score request on your behalf. Inquires made on your behalf will not be shown to creditors and will not affect your credit score.
  • Does it affect my score?
I Have been using CreditKarma for a few months to keep an eye on my score. I was wondering if it has a negative effect on my score to update it (2-3 times a week)? I notice changes day to day.
  • Quizzel and myFICO.com
Heard Howard talk about them the other day. Went in and disputed a bunch of stuff that wasn't mine. We'll be paying off the CCthis paycheck , so we'll get to re-check in a couple of weeks and see if the score has changed.
  • FICO
I know I can find my credit "score" anyplace but it's not really a score. All it does is show me the ratings I've received from each lender. I would LOVE to know where to get my FICO rating.
  • Quizzle Offers Free Tools and Options
Quizzle is an 100% permission-based tool. That means that we'll present options, but you're not obligated to anything. It's completely up to you to pursue options further or remain in your current situation, which in Paul's case, sounds like a good one -- congratulations!

Ultimately, we're giving you FREE access to a bunch of great tools -- like an Experian credit report and score, home value report and budgeting tool -- that we hope will give you a better understanding of your overall home and money picture. If later down the road, you'd like to take a look at your home loan situation, we hope you'll consider us. That's it. It's completely up to you. In the meantime, enjoy Quizzle.com.
  • Quizzle has Quicken Loans interests in mind!
I tried out Quizzle, and got my score, but I just put in my mortgage and my car loan, and it is suggesting that I trade my 15yr 5.875% FIXED mortgage for a 30 year 7% FIXED, or a 30 year ARM.

So Quizzle is trying to get people to refinance with Quicken Loans.

I chatted with an agent online to tell him that the site is not working correctly ;)

They wanted me to pay more, and get ripped off!
  • FICO scores
For those that mentioned needing a way to get your credit score for free, it's in the article. FICO score = Fair Isaac (that would be the the FI portion of FICO)
  • FREE CREDIT REPORT
I USED CREDITKARMA.COM IT WORKS GREAT. I HAD FREE SCORE WITH NO GRIEF IN ABOUT 5 MIN. THANKS FOR THE TIP
  • Credit Score
    Quizzle didn't provide credit score.
CreditKarma did. This is the one to use.
  • Credit Score....
Instead of being concerned about your credit score, put your energy and getting out of debt. Live within your means. Learn about money and finances. Then you do not have to worry about your credit score.
  • Credit Score problem
I wonder if having your credit files frozen at the 3 big credit agencies will prevent creditkarma from obtaining your score. My credit files are frozen and creditkarma reports that it is unable to retreive my scores. Does anyone know if this is the problem?
  • free credit score
credit.com is worthless! Quizzle.com is just as bad. The only site that gave me my score without hassles, is creditkarma.com
  • No Free Credit Score
You get a report for free but you are charged to know your SCORE. Your headlines is not correct. Many options for your FREE credit score
  • scores
I've used both credit.com and creditkarma.com... karma is more straightforward and navigates better. I can track the changes in my credit report pretty easily.
  • TransUnion Lawsuit
$75 million isn't much - lawyers will get a chunk and if 50+ million sign up, we can get a $1 rebate? What happens after 6 or 9 months when people grow to like the credit monitoring service - will they charge a credit card to continue service and make their money back? Can't we just get TU to pay the $3 to freeze our credit in Georgia and forget about the class action lawsuit?
  • Credit Karma
I just went to credit karma and go my free credit score. This is awesome. Why pay for your credit score when you can get it for free.
    Check it out.
