Jun 04, 2008 -- Small car frenzy overtaking America

You've probably heard anecdotally that the cars we're buying have changed. GM, Ford and Chrysler are wounded ducks right now because so much of their business is in larger vehicles. New data shows that sales of the Big 3 have dipped below that of the smaller Asian cars for the first time ever.

The No. 1 selling vehicle is now the Honda Civic -- not the Ford F-Series pickup truck as it's been for years. In fact, sales of big SUVs are down to just 4% of the entire market.

People stuck in a new gas guzzler are always torn between keeping it and dumping it. Typically, you're better off keeping it and budgeting for the high gas prices. The reality is that fuel is still a small amount of the total ownership cost of a vehicle.

But if, for example, you have a 4-year old SUV, you may want to think about dumping it for a used fuel-efficient car. Depreciation will threaten your wallet more than the actual fuel costs.

Clark recently saw an analysis that found driving an SUV for 15K miles/year over a period of 5 years will cost you $100K. That factors in purchase price, maintenance and fuel.

The July issue of Consumer Reports has a cover story about gas-saving cars. There's a new top dog out there and it's the Hyundai Elantra SE. The No. 2 car is the Honda Civic EX (manual). Other top choices include the Toyota Prius, Mazda 3 and the Subaru Impreza. In the class of extra-small cars, the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa both got kudos.

What others are saying

  • SUV's
Clark, I keep hearing rhetoric about "the evil, gas guzzling SUV". I own a 2007 GMC Yukon. I live in rural Wisconsin, about an hour north of Milwaukee. We have country roads, many hills, and we have winter! My Yukon is basically a pickup truck drive train with an enclosed, secure cargo and passenger area. It is an extremely safe vehicle because of its build and its road handling technology. A majority of households here have some sort of truck, SUV, or van in them. It's just the nature of where we live. And that SUV of mine performs better when it comes to fuel than many pickup trucks, which are not labeled as "evil"! Here anyway, there will always be a market for "more able" vehicles. I do take a pass on some other, less important consumer goodies in order to have what I consider the perfect truck. It is just a matter of choices ... I do not find those choices difficult at all, just a matter of doing the math.

In the age of instantaneous information, over-reaction to negative economic news is commonplace. Our economy has always behaved in cycles, and that is likely to continue.

Since folks like me tend to plan conservatively when it comes to what we can afford, don't you think the media and the marketplace (and maybe GM) are over-reacting to the present market?
  • mass transit
    Clark

Can you tell me why georgia is so against good mass transit. Our governor is considering spending money on more commuter buses. Wasn't he the governor that closed schools due to the high price of fuel a few years, ago. Fuel is more expensive. I spent a few weeks in Germany. I rode their rail system every day. It was outstanding. Why can't Georgia make a progressive step? We come last or next to last too many times. There is enough abandoned rail sidings in Georgia to make a serious push into rail transit. It doesn't have to be over built. A platform and rest rooms with parking. Electric trains with solar energy feeding the system. You don't have to remake the wheel. Just ride on it.
  • RE: medical student
    @ medical student
first, reagan conservative =/= republican. nice try on the "worship" comment.

second, the oil in the ground that we ALREADY KNOW of in the U.S. is an estimated amount of about 30 years of being 100% free of foreign oil. in the meantime INDEPENDENT companies can continue to work on technology to wean the U.S. off oil.

third, we would need to build more refineries if we were pumping our own oil on U.S. turf.

fourth, the oil prices are tied to supply and demand. only so much is being pumped right now in the world and with the growing economies of china and india, we are having to compete with them in purchasing the crude.

fifth, "oil prices kept in check"... hardly. have you heard of the oil "futures?" oil prices driven up because of what these "futures people" THINK is going to happen? (kinda like the stock market now-days...it's all about guessing and feelings instead of bottom lines of companies)

sixth, a whole other topic - the dollar IS weak and continues to decline, thanks to the government overspending and putting the country further into debt. the money the government steals from all U.S. citizens (taxes) doesn't even cover the interest we owe year to year on the debt the country has, let alone the $$$ the government keeps spending on things.

last, democrat = communist. they want a bigger government to "take care" of everyone. that will translate to more rules and regulations that will only control the way we can live. like obama's one comment... "We can't drive our SUV's, eat as much as we want and have our thermostats set at 72 degrees and expect other countries talk to us." *#$& obama and his socialism. if that's his personal belief, fine. practice it in your own life, don't impose it on everyone else - as all dems want to do with their "policies."
  • Getting rid of Sprint as a carrier
I have been trying to correct an error with sprint since July 2007. I have been paying on my bill what I owe until they get their error fixed. They have cut our phones off and left me no choice but to go to another carrier. Now they are threatening to ruin my credit with their mistake. Does anyone have any advise.
  • communist liberals? Really?
Aren't current refineries operating at only 85%? What would building more do? Isn't the dollar terribly weak now? Doesn't that make foreign products more expensive? Like oil? Aren't oil prices kept in check (relatively!) by the comforting fact that the U.S. could tap into reserves in an emergency? Wouldn't that evaporate if we drilled it all out, driving oil prices higher? Also, the last time I looked, having a technical majority in congress doesn't mean squat. You need 2/3rds, remember? Hey, I'm no fan of either party but calling one communist while worshipping the other is pretty asinine and narrow-minded, don't you think?
  • Thank the communist liberals for high gas prices
if everyone would just open their eyes and see that, thanks to the communist liberals, building new refineries and drilling for our own oil on U.S. turf has been blocked over and over again by the com.libs in congress.

front runner of the com.libs, nancy pelosi, touted that she and the dems would lower gas prices if they gained the majority. last time i checked, gas prices are up... and too bad she keeps blocking the bills for drilling in the U.S. and building new refineries.

liberals want to control our lives with a "god government." it's ashame they will destroy our country in the process.
  • where's my car?
how did small cars turn into it's the Republicans fault? Wake up and see that the oil market is global.
  • Small Car Trend
History repeats itself. This is just like it was during the phony gas shortage in the 70's. People bought little foreign cars and dumped gas guzzlers, the price of everything went up, and there was a big panic. It happens when the Republicans have no hope of reelection. Their big corporate buddies grab what they can while they can.

Bush will no doubt go out in the long standing tradition of the Republican Party by issuing pardons to his staff. The new president will sign some fix-all law that will put a few people back to work and they will think the new president is some kind of a god.

I vote for the Libertarians just to show the others that they do not have the monopoly they think they have. It is not a wasted vote, it is a PROTEST VOTE!
