May 30, 2008 -- Avoid single-issue insurance policies

Single-issue insurance policies are considered a rip-off by some consumer advocates. Clark also agrees that you should avoid them. Examples of single-issue policies include mortgage life insurance, cancer insurance and accident insurance.

In the case of cancer insurance, insurers use the power of the C-word to sell the policy. Years ago, people wouldn't even utter the word "cancer." They would just say that you had a malignant tumor, because a diagnosis was often considered fatal. But today, many people survive cancer. Insurers, however, have learned that they can still capitalize on people's fear of the disease.

Accident policies are a tremendous rip-off. The reality is that general insurance -- of the life, disability and/or health variety -- represents a better choice.

Mortgage life insurance, meanwhile, is also garbage. The premiums are about 10 times what life insurance should cost. The worst part of it all is that you're insuring the mortgage company, not yourself; mortgage life insurance pays off the lender in the event of your death! But your survivors likely will have more pressing financial needs at that time. That's why plain vanilla term life insurance would suffice in such an instance.

Finally, extended warranties on electronics are another example of single-issue insurance policies that you should avoid. Consumer Reports says that 1 in 5 laptops will fail in the first 5 years. Yet, on the bright side, 80% will go for 5 years without a problem.

Another reason why extended warranties don't make sense is that the laptop or HDTV you buy today will be obsolete in 24 months. You shouldn't insure rapidly depreciating commodities.

What others are saying

  • cancer insurance was a blessing
my mom had this on herself and my step dad. The policy was a blessing to my mother when my stepdad was getting treated and eventually passed. The policty even paid for my step dad to go out of the country to receive treatment when the U.S. docs had given up on him. Ordinarily, I'd agree with Clark but I saw what good this insurance does. Sorry, Clark.
  • single issue insurance
I bought a $42.00 per year policy on my son's computer thru State Farm 5 years ago for replacement due to damage. 5 years later his computer was damaged and I was given a check for about 1 grand to buy another. I told the agent that I couldn't believe that they sell these type of policies. I was told that I was only the 3rd person they have ever had to pay from their office. What a deal!
  • Wrong Clark
Wife bought a cancer policy a year ago after a colleague did. Wife was diagnosed with cancer in May. We are thankful we had the policy at this point. Ripoff to some but can be a lifesaver if you are at risk or feel the need for more insurance.
  • ford
lesson learned. don't buy a ford with extended warranty or not.
  • Cancer Insurance
THANK YOU, Clark! You are RIGHT ON about pretty much everything...espcecially rip-off "cancer insurance". Shame on those insurance salesmen for using scare tactics!!

I think the "statistic" that "cancer bankrupts 80% of people" is something they teach in "insurance salesman school"!!
  • Cancer and Accident Insurance
Clark, Cancer bankrupts 1/3rd of all survivors and over 80% of those folks had health insurance. Short term disablilty also accounts for almost half of all home forclosures. When most people live paycheck to paycheck it makes sense to spend 1 hours a weeks worth of pay to protect the other 39 hours. I think you need to rethink these policies.
  • car extended warrantees
I am at the point that I either buy an extended policy for my 2006 Ford Freestyle. I have already has some major problems with the axles and brakes, which were all covered. What do you have to say about extended car insurance. I listened to most of your program on 5/27 about one time policies, but did not hear you mention those for vehicles
  • Insurance
Clark! Well said. I sold funeral insurance for years, when it was popular, and sometimes mortgage and cancer insurance. Never liked either of the latter and I just let the folks buy it and did not push it as I felt it was not worth the premiums.
