May 29, 2008 -- Medical tourism can save you big bucks

Since the '90s, Clark has been talking about medical tourism as an option for non-emergency and cosmetic surgery. Americans can go overseas for a procedure and pay 20 cents on the dollar (or less) to be treated by Western-trained staff and a private nurse in modern facilities.

US News & World Report recently ran a cover story on the medical tourism trend. Shortly after that, The Wall Street Journal retorted by saying the trend is overhyped and nobody's doing it.

For once, Clark has to disagree with his "girlfriend." The reality is that many Americans lack adequate insurance coverage and/or have huge co-pays, so going overseas is a viable alternative.

While there are some inconveniences in going far away for care, the cost differences can be ginormous. (That's a technical term!) For example, a hip replacement that may run you $60K here might be between $12K and $15K overseas.

If you are considering medical tourism, how can you be sure an overseas facility is any good? Check with the Joint Commission International to see who's accredited.

Yes, medical tourism is controversial, but people need care and some can't afford it under our system. Two providers in Southern California -- Health Net and Blue Shield -- have provisions for treatment in Mexico that can save 40 percent on insurance premiums. Meanwhile, dental care in Costa Rica can be one-fifth the cost we pay here.

  • Costa Rica Dental
Ralph S. please tell us where you got your dental work done in Costa Rica? My husband and I would sooooo much appreciate it! Thanks!!
  • Medicla tourism
I just saved $4,700 for 4 root canals I did not need by going to Mexico for major dental work just for starters! This covered all my travel expenses three fold not to mention the savings for my implants and crowns. The service was astounding, the Doctor personally drove me from my hotel to his clinic and back in his own vehicle. I'm so happy and I will never use a U.S. Dentist again period.
  • Planet Hospital-dental care
I had checked several medical tourism organizations and decided to pursue PlanetHospital. The information I recieved from them was contradictory and also excessively lengthy in response as I had submitted requested xrays in March and awaited response. A week later I phoned and was told they would be contacting me this happened ov er the course of 2 months until I was contacted in June with an "estimate". I had a teleconference with the dentist who was a new listing on their page and he hastily went over treatment. I requested a written estimate and was provided with an email that did not specify individual teeth but a generalized treatmentplan which included crowns on teeth that didn't require treatment. Needless to say I did not pursue treatment and requested my xrays to be returned to me. That was in June and I still haven;t received any response to my calls or emails. The "dentist" on staff with Planet Hospital gave me one opinion of treatment which was reasonable and when I attempted to follow-up with her I had no response. I was under the impression that Planet Hospital was undergoing internal changes and questioned the reliability of their services despite their claims of BBB, and presentations on national television networks.
  • High cost of medical care is not always the insurance co's fault.....
The high cost of medical care is due to those of us who can pay are paying for those who can't. See this link and you will understand:

  • Medical Tourism - Dental Implants
Especially to Ralph S., would you please give the name of your dentist in Costa Rica? I certainly need him.
  • Health Care Here
This is timely information. Thank you, Clark!

I believe our system of health care has so many problems, most caused by insurance companies, that I think it may implode at anytime.
  • Dental work in Rio saves me $2,659.00
Before i left on vacation... got a quote from my personal dentist...$3,100.00. Arrived in Rio.. my friend suggested i check out one of many local dentists...... this one happen to be above the local butcher shop... felt like i was going back into the 50's with the old equiptment... four "women" dentists.... low overhead no doubt.... no lawyers probably,,,,, just great service.......... exact same work/quote.... $441.00. I will always save my dental work for out of the country. I have a similar story for Guaymas, Mexico. No Marketing, fancy buildings, lawyers.... just good work, great savings.

    Portland Oregon

Oh, i forgot. The woman dentist was trained at the Oregon dental school in Portland Oregon. lol. small world. Don't you just love lawyer's!!!!!!
  • Using "Third World"
I definitely believe Clark must stop using the words "Third World". This term, I think, was started by US of A or the so called western countries. It is very close to being called racist. If Clark beleives racism is bad, then this is equally bad as well. Also, if it relates to economy and prosperity then the very countries that can provide affordable, quality health care do not deserve to be called "Third World". I would say US of A would fall in that category as the citizens have to go out to "afford" health care. I do not expect Clark to say that.
  • Medical Tourism
Our firm was the world's first to develop an insured medical tourism benefit OPTION for employees of self-funded employers. The innovative concept became effective in February 2008. Cumulative savings could be in the Billions of dollars for employers, employees, and our carrier in the first couple of years. Our findings for savings strongly support Clark Howard's report as illustrated on MedicalTourism-USA.com
  • Medical Tourism
Ginormous savings are definitely a lure to travel for medical care, but so too is the quality of medical care and state of the art facilities. Accreditation is very important. So too is having a medical tourism facilitator like WorldMed Assist (http://www.worldmedassist.com) help get you through what can be a daunting process of finding the right destination, the best hospital, the most skilled surgeon. Another reason people travel for medical care is they need a procedure where surgeons abroad are more experienced, like hip resurfacing, which was approved in the U.S. only in 2006 (http://www.worldmedassist.com/Hip_Resurfacing_Surgery_India.htm)
  • dental implants
Has anyone had any experience with getting dental implants done off shore? These basically are replacement teeth in lieu of bridge work. I so, please advise prices and your opinion of the quality of service. I had a relative go to Thailand recently and had intestinal surgery. The service was great and he saved over 70% even allowing for travel expense. Thanks.
  • Medical Tourism
I just came back from Costa Rica where I had MAJOR dental work. I was quoted a figure in Atlanta and got everything done for 1/3 including airfare, hotel, meals, and my dentist threw in a free tour. I would recommend the tour to anyone in my family without a doubt.
It was a great experience finding a lot of US people there doing all kinds of cosmetic and restorative surgeries.
They media in San Jose labels my dentist as "The dentist for the Famous" because many celebrities, dignataries and models use his services. I am happy with the results and the "ginormous" savings.
