May 29, 2008 -- Thrift stores, Steve and Barry's in vogue with cheap clothing

Clark has been out of style forever and usually has no idea about what's going on in popular culture. But right now, he's actually in vogue because so many people are concerned about being extra thrifty!

If you pick up any general interest magazine, you'll probably see articles on shopping on a budget or frugal fashion. Newspapers are filled with stories about saving money on everyday purchases. In fact, the media blitz is so intense that people are now getting tired of stories about high gas prices.

Some sectors of the economy are actually benefiting from people's wallets getting pinched. Thrift stores are one example.

Clark is fond of picking up dress clothes at thrift shops. They're usually in great shape because few men dress up for work anymore. Instead, today's standard office outfit usually includes khaki pants and a golf shirt. On the other hand, Clark typically won't buy casual clothing at a thrift shop because he finds it's usually too threadbare.

For women, there's a new gold standard for saving on clothing: Steve and Barry's. This retailer is selling all clothing for $8.98 or less for a limited time only. They even have fashion lines from famous folks such as actress Sarah Jessica Parker, tennis star Venus Williams and others. (Editor's note: This retailer has since gone out of business!)

Clark has been excited for years about Steve and Barry's because of their Starbury shoe line. These shoes sell for between $8 and $15. Starburys are almost solely responsible for breaking the ultra expensive Air Jordan stranglehold on the feet and hearts of low income neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Second Hand Clothing $$$$$$$
I have a desire to open a consignment shop for clothing in my area.
I have for 3 different second hand stores, and keep seeing big mistakes being made in the stores in my area
    ( Portland Oregon).

I have also worked in new retail for 30ish years.

And I can tell you this. Clothing for some women, is like trading baseballs cards.

They buy new, wear it once or twice, and then off it goes to the consignment shop. (And of course, while they are there, they buy more clothing loot to take home.)

The question is? Should I write a 'how to book" on how to run a consignment shop?

    Or open my own store?
  • e-mail to Steve and Barry
We were customers (my husband, children, and I) in your store in Auburn, Ala on yesterday and a few months ago. Thanks for carrying Elevens (shoes). We were able to purchase several. However, we were quite disappointed, and we mentioned our concerns to the manager on duty at the time and we were assured that our concerns would be addressed. We stated that my husband, daughter, and I were interested in purchasing merchandise with Tuskegee University logo. In your entire store, we found just a long sleeve T-Shirt with very simple pressed on letters that said Tuskegee University. Tuskegee University is located less than 30 miles from this store. TU is a very reputable school, and the SIAC champions for several years in multiple sports. Upon a second visit, we still found the same. Please Help!
  • Steve and Barry's purchase
    Hi Clark!
Love your show. I am a Realtor in NC, so budget is certainly something I have to stick with. I recently needed a new pair of tennis shoes and didn't have or want to spend a lot of money on them. I went to Steve and Barry's and found a great pink and white pair that I believe have Venus Williams name on them. I paid $8.00 for them and they are the most comfortable, durable tennis shoes I have ever had. This is a great place to shop for adults and kids when you are on a budget. Thanks for mentioning and I'll keep listening!!
  • Consign shops and Thrift Stores
In Tucker, GA on Lawrenceville Hwy, there is a Thrift store named "Value Village." Great buys, lots of merchandise. Also in Tucker, GA, there is a terrific consignment shop in the INGLES shopping center. I got a beautiful skirt, blouse, matching shoes and bag for $35 to attend a graduation. . .been shopping in cosign and thrift shops all my life...good name brands that last. . .can't tell you the last time I bought a new piece, except for underwear of course. (giggle)
  • thrift stores
Clark, you are definitely missing the boat on thrift stores. If you are finding stuff too worn, try another store. I always find some items every time, new with original store tags, and good brands too (better than I usually buy at the retail stores). I have had a lot of good luck with Goodwill stores around here.
  • Thirft Stores
In Columbia, MO (home of U of MO) there is this great store called Upscale Resale which is run by this womens group and it sells gently used clothing --I have bought great cashmere sweaters for $7 that have been donated to their store and the help is all volunteer so there is no labor cost, the clothes are donated for free, and all the proceeds go to charity and there are great bargains -- I have this great cashmere sweater and a guy came up to me and said, "I had a sweater just like that and my wife cleaned out my closet and got rid of it, you sure look great in that sweater." What he never knew was the great sweater was his old one and it was in mint condition.. Brooks Brothers dress shirts gently used for $5 and in most cases they are professional laundered so that save $1.50 right there-- I have used this store for years.. Two things you don't buy used -- udnerwear and toothbrushes...just kidding...there is nothing better than getting a deal on something nice...if you are looking at used appliances be sure and plug them in to make sure they work before you buy...
  • Gee, in sizes for all women?
If it's Sarah Jessica Parker's and other designer's lines of clothes, doubtful.
  • Cheap Chic in Douglasville
Travel to Douglasville and check out the closeouts and tremendous buys offered at Soho Clothing Express. Find apparel from Macy's, Kohl's, Goody's, and more at tremedous savings. The merchandise is new! Look for Soho between Best Buy and Atlanta Bread. this store is very cool!
  • Reponse to Adam - how is it so cheap?
The clothes aren't made in sweatshops or anything like that. They are crazy about cutting costs at every step, such as using second hand office furniture, and only have a razor thin profit margin. If you google the store name, you can find some great articles on how they can afford to be so cheap like this one: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/01/fashion/01STEVE.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
  • how so cheap?
Does anyone know where this stuff is made? I dont want to buy a shirt for $9 if it was made by some 12 year old kid in Cambodia. Just because something is cheap doesnt always make it a good thing.
  • clothing for you
steve and barry's has mens clothes - from casual to blazers and dress pants - go check them out today!
  • Clothing for me
Is there a store out there for men?al53q
  • clothing prices
I find it very interesting/almost comical that it use to be, when someone commented on an article of clothing you were wearing, folks use to brag about how expensive it was....
"oh this ole dress? I got it at Nordstroms for $500."...now they're bragging about how "inexpensive" it was to purchase... "oh, this ole dress? I got it at Wal-Mart for $10.00!") Personally, I'm very happy to see the second-hand places and inexpensive apparel stores doing well (it's about time! I was raised in the retail business and it wasn't at one of those fancy-smancy stores). It's about time the big fancy stores start feeling the pain and the thrifty stores do well. Here in Scottsdale, AZ, second hand stores are BIG BUSINESS and have been for as long as I've been here from the east coast (7 years)... all types of second-hand stores..... from Goodwill to Tuesday Morning to the fancier ones, yet all are a better deal than the department stores.... "here-here"! Love your show!
    Kindest regards,
    Marla Peck
  • Steve & Barry's
I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed the clothes I've purchased from Steve & Barry's. In fact- I bought a $20 pair of jeans from them that has lasted me for over a year and still is my favorite pair of jeans- they look just as nice as when I first bought them! I heard about the store from you. Thanks Clark!
  • S & B's
Steve & Barry's is an amazing store! Cool T's, nice hoodies and wonderful inexpensive line of clothes for ladies! It's so easy to load a cart or two up with clothes at that place. And the best thing, is you don't spend a fortune on it!
  • Thrifty ways
I enjoyed reading your thoughts on thrift stores. Here is how I saved money today. After finding that my lock no longer worked on my old GE stove I decided that it would less expensive to buy than repair. Well after looking around Lowes and going from the most inexpensive to the top of the line new innovation of ranges that can roast a good pot roast etc. in only a fraction of the time that it takes in conventional ovens and seeing the price of the latest Electrolux that I could have for only a "couple of thousand" including delivery, I then went home to see if I could fix my non- working oven door lock. Well I decided nothing ventured, nothing gained so with a couple of good whacks with the kitchen hammer I repaired my range. Gee the old stove doesn't look so bad after all. I guess that I'll keep it a few more years and just be content to watch "Martha " showcase it on her show.....Ha Ha Ha ..My husband's wallet feels fatter already... Wonder what Martha will showcase to tempt me with tomorrow....Rose
  • Steve & Barry's
Steve & Barry's isn't just for women! It's men and kids too. We have to travel an hour to get to our closest store, but it's worth it, say once a year or so, as part of a day trip. The clothes are well made, good style and are a HUGE value. The kids are cool with stuff from S & B's, because the whole "Stephan Marbury" thing (shoes), so it's a real find there!
