May 21, 2008 -- Honda to launch affordable line of hybrids in 2009

CLARKONOMICS: Your favorite penny-pincher walked to the studio today. It’s something he likes to do several times a year when the weather is nice. Clark lives only 5.6 miles from the studio and the cost to walk is free. In fact, Clark saved about $6 today by not operating his car…and he got exercise. It’s like his own Declaration of Independence from high gas prices.

The futures market is showing oil at $140/barrel. Less a year ago, we forget that oil was under $50/ barrel. There has been a massive run-up in price, especially for airlines and other transportation-based businesses.

Most people aren’t fortunate enough to be able to walk to work like Clark. But there’s always something you can do to fight back against the high prices at the pump. For example, Honda will be rolling out a huge new fleet of affordable hybrids in 2009. The payback should be very quick for buyers; the hybrid version of a car will only be about $1,900 more than the traditional gas engine version.

Nissan, meanwhile, is launching a battery-powered car in the next 2 years. They’ve partnered with NEC to make a new battery for plug-in hybrids and electric cars. It will be beta tested in forklifts, so beware if you’re an operator!

The point is there are real solutions coming. Oil was previously so cheap that we could almost be forgiven for not being more energy smart. But to paraphrase Winston Churchill, “The American people are finally getting around to doing the right thing after trying nearly everything else.”

  • Sweepstakes Winner
We received a letter from Washington Mutual Investments, Inc. out of Alberta, Canada.(1st red flag). The letter congratulated us on winning $185.000. Enclosed was a real check for $4550.00 with colored border, watermark, the works. The letter stated that the remaining prize shall be sent after the non residential tax was paid, $3720.00.(2nd flag). It almost threw me because I would be ahead the difference. The payment method requested was an electronic money transfer. (hmm 3rd?). Then the letter stated "you are strongly advised to contact your claim agent(names and numbers given) before depositing the check into your bank and strongly advised to keep this information from the public in order to avoid multiple claims." ???? (totally lost count of flags). My motto is "If it looks too good to be true, better check it out before you leap!" I first went on-line and looked up the bank the check was drawn on and called them. I ended up in the fraud dept. The advice I received was not what I really wanted to hear. FRAUD. I was told this story of someone who had deposited a check in this situation. When the funds for the deposited check were unavailable, she was arrested and held liable for the money. I also look up the issuers name, Global Fairways in Michigan. Legit company, except they are shippers, not a sweepstakes company.I contacted Global Fairways, mine was the 3rd call to them about the same thing, the check is fraudulent. The entire letter and check has been faxed to them. I feel very lucky to be educated by Clark Howard to not be afraid to check things out. Follow your gut, even if you don't want to. Use the internet, Global was very appreciative.I hope this helps someone from making a bad mistake.

good security system for your home
  • Fuel Savings
Why haven't you commented on internet advertised water technology for gasoline engines as well as for diesel
  • Solar powered cars
Don't worry no one will steal your ideal because it will more than likely never happen. The laws of physics are against it.

  • solar powered battery for car
is there a car with a solar panel that would recharge the car battery and power the car? if not, would it be possible, if so please don't take idea, I could use a few bucks if it would work.
  • Hybrids
Hybrids have higher efficiency in trains, plains and vehicles primarily because the internal combustion engine only runs when it is needed.
  • Sweepstakes Fraud
I got a call today from 1-866-598-3512 stating that I had won a sweepstakes that I never entered. They said I was guaranteed to win of the prizes...Ford Explorer, Flatscreen, Trip, and something else. I would need to come to the Galleria Suite 1-C 27 and attend a 90 min meeting. They said I needed to bring my spouse, although earlier they mentioned I hadn't check whether I was married and was calling me by my maiden name, which I sometimes still go by. Also I would need to bring my driver's lic, passport, and/or credit card. No children allowed. At first I said I would attend their May 23rd mtg, but then I thought to myself that this scam sounded exactly like something I saw on the show Real Hustle so I called back and cancelled. He asked me the typical stuff to persuade me to come but I told him I had a bad feeling about it.
  • Gasoline Prices
The market truly decides what energy sources we will use. The high gas prices may end up being the biggest favor the greedy Arabs and our inept government could have done for us. Now we are finally waking up, getting mad, and seeking alternative technologies that make sense. True electric cars that are charged from a nuclear or coal-fired power plant will suit me just fine.
  • Home Security System
Best bet is cellular reporting as a backup to using Vonage.
  • Phone service/home security
My wife is insistent that we have a home security system. We're currently with Vonage paying only $28.44 per month. I understand you have to have a land line and I don't want to pay $60+ at which they start at with unlimited long distance calls. What do you suggest. We want to save money and at the same time my wife wants to be safe when I'm gone... Thanks, Dave Ketelsen
