May 19, 2008 -- Pocket camcorder wows Clark and his wife

He may be behind the curve, but Clark just discovered the handheld cameras that are part of the Flip Video Ultra Series. With prices starting around $100, this line of ultra small camcorders made a great gift for his wife on Mother's Day.

Let's face it, most handheld video cameras are just bulky enough to be annoying. Plus they have too many buttons to operate with ease. But the Flip is simple to use and about the size of a pack of cigarettes. It even passed Clark's own "dunce cap test," which means that he didn't need to look at the owner's manual to operate it.

The Flip comes in mostly feminine color schemes and is small enough to slip into a woman's purse. There is also an all-black model that may appeal to men. One feature that Clark and his wife really like is the built-in USB connector that pops out of the side. Once it hooks in to your computer, you can instantly e-mail your videos, burn a DVD and more.

The real beauty of the Flip is that it ends the frustration of fumbling around for your camera at the right moment. Clark's only problem now is that he hopes his wife gives him one for his birthday!

  • Light bulbs
About a week ago, you mentioned a lightbulb that is going to be the best lightbulb we have seen---and a great energy saver. Can you remind me what that lightbulg is? Name brand or something about it?
    Thank you,
  • Flip or camera
I'm looking for a camera to shoot items for E-bay. Would the resolution be OK? Looks like I would get the bonus of having a video camera if I bought it.
  • not bad not good
These have been out for years, but you only get youtube quality out of them they are more webcam then video recorder. resolution at best is 800X600 in these gadgets and they were made more for the convienence of going from pocket to comp screen ready video quickly and with little fuss. I wouldn't record my wife's birthday with it, but for a night on the town, a concert, or to capture a little fun with friends i guess it would do. the added bonus is with everyone carrying little spy cameras you see some amazing things captured on video, just check out utube.
  • Price vs size
Sanyo is the way to go. All the rest of the compact camcoders are mediocre quality at best
  • I have one
The flip video is not a super high quality video camera but that isn't isn't niche. If you want a high quality camera then get that. The flip video's selling feature is easy of use, super small size, accessories, low lighting video recording, and excellent sound recording. You can get an underwater case for the flip video and I have used it to scuba dive as far as 70 ft underwater even though the case is only rated to 35ft. People on the dive boat were floored when I told them my underwater video camera only cost $150 with the case.
  • resolution
the specs seem to be 640x480. Since I don't have the Flip (only RCA's competitor to the $100'ish camcorder), I can't speak to the quality of a screen cap taken from a Flip video recording.

Anyone know what the megapixels are for downloading a picture from the video? Will it be blurred.
