May 12, 2008 -- Would you rather reveal your weight or your credit card debt?

Half of all Americans would rather fess up to their weight than reveal their credit card balance. The amount of debt we're carrying is up 400% in the last 18 years, adjusted for inflation. Credit cards are most often used for lifestyle means. There's nothing wrong with using money to have fun, but you need to be able to pay for the fun.

If you carry credit card debt, Clark wants you to list all your balances and list the interest rates. You'd be amazed at how many people don't know this basic info about their debts. The first step to being healed is to know the problem and attack it. Next, you've got to stop using your credit cards.

When you're readying a plan of attack, there are 2 different philosophies on paying off credit cards. Clark says either is just fine, though he's biased toward the latter.

You can throw most of your money at the smallest balance, while paying minimums on all others. That way you begin to eliminate debts and psychologically gain control. Or you can focus on paying the debt with the highest interest rate first (again, while doing minimums on all others) and then go on to the next highest one. That way you ladder your debt. This second approach is also favored by a lot of personal finance types.

  • How did this happen
Size does not matter, debt does. I know how I got to this point. $16,000 in cc, $78,000 on home, $377.00 on auto, $37,000 in investment property. Helping someone to get on their feet. When child is in secure job and able to pay bills, then will be able to pay off auto, pay down credit cards, and maybe sell investment or pay off. Auto repairs and student debt was pushing me downward, and then the gas and food did the rest. I should know better, I did work in loan servicing (when loan were in arrears). I will be debt free again. Also, no child support ever received and x-husband cashed in child's college fund. I did not get rich, he did
  • Debt caused by divorce
My ex wife is getting richer and richer off our divorce while i am getting poorer. I have gone from 2500 a month to 1600 a month due to the excessively high 900.00 a month child support. My weight has been going down because i have not been eating. I am currently in 25000 of debt and due to my ex not selling the house it is still killing my credit report as well. this sucks for men. Women stop divorcing to get rich off it not because we did things wrong.

  • Sacrafice
I am retired military, Got out with roughly $130,000 in debt, took a job over in Dubai(Smile) It is beautiful there, payed off 3 credit cards Totaling about $40,000, 2 Nice cars owed about $25,000,all payed in only 12 months, Did repairs on the house and still put money in the saving, God is good all the time. Set your goals and stick to them. Believe me I know how hard it is. But you can do it. I am 6' 195 of rock solid muscle
  • Heavy debt
Overweight and overdebt! Look at me, I'me average! (and it feels not fine)
  • Neither. They both are too high for my liking.
But I wish I was around 130 lbs with no debt. I have way too much debt that I am slowly...I mean slowly paying off. I don't splurge except bowling on base for about $20 every two weeks.
I have a loan for $17,000; car loan1 for about $17,000; car loan2 (in japan) for $3000; mortgage for about $125,000; credit card1 for $500; credit card 2 for about $3000; military credit card for about $3,000; and, student loans that are in deferment until August, but they are about $7,000.
I use my military card to buy groceries and hygiene necessities for the family. That's because I don't have enough left over after payday.

I know it's pathetic because I have a Vonage phone since I'm overseas, another car loan over here, daycare, and a cell phone for business since my base doesn't use the Vonage while over here. I have sat down and wrote out all my bills and still can't seem to get them under control or lower. I'm going to do it once again and really try to cut rid of all the excess spending that I do.
  • Cash is King

    $22,000 credit card debt
    $15,000 car loan
    $210,000 Arm 5-1 mortgage
    $38,000 college loan
  • make credit cards pay
    210 lbs
we pay our balances every month and have never been hit by interest, we prefer no fee cards, but will pay for certain brand cards for the rewards....we milk the rewards and have earned multiple tickets to hawaii by signing up with cards that offer big ff bonus miles...after we get enough for 2 tickets we switch to a different card...has worked for american, continental, delta and again with delta by converting starwood points. we would have to pay the bills anyway so we figure why not earn points? I understand we are in the minority of finacially responsible people who don't splurge because have 50k+ of available credit, but instead we only buy what we need and get rewarded by the credit card companies.
  • Have control
I have $2100 in credit card debt due to a recent move. That will be paid off by July. The interest rate is 14%.

My car is paid off, my son graduates HS next month and my only monthly required payments are rent, insurance and cell phone. I'm plugging all extra money into investments.

I weight 140 lbs but would love to be 120.
  • Help
30000 in credit debt. 25,000 in car debt ( 2 cars)100,000 house debt 40,000 student loan debt.

119 lbs. There, now don't you all feel better? I know I feel horrible! A lot of the credit debt is from medical, but not all. I need to hang out here for a long time and get this under control. The *only* good thing is I stay home ( part time job, not nearly enough $) I guess if I go back when my middle child starts kindergarten ( July ) and just have 1 daycare payment, we can really start to make a dent in this mess!

    Thanks for lisitening
  • 125 lbs, $55,000.00 in debt... now that i actually wrote it out, i feel sad...HELP!!!!!
  • get a grip
180lbs, no debt. just stop spending and save for a few months - pay the darn things off and then cut up all but 1 !! lifestyle choices are key.
  • 155lbs., $729.00 which will be almost paid off when Uncle Sam gives me back 600 bucks.
  • 145 lbs., something like $770 that i will pay off before it comes due!
  • w and cd
155lbs and $296.43! that didn't hurt at all
  • Credit Cards
We listen to Clark as offten as we can and do agree with not owing anyone. However we do like the cash back, and fuel per gal discounts that come with some credit cards. No having said that we pay off our cards before the cycle is up and therefore cary a zero balance. How much do we save during a year doing this worked out last year to $1,568.00. We have talked to merchants that would rather take the credit card than give you a 1 or 2 % discount for cash. We know this does not compute as the credit card companies are charging the merchants at least that much to honor the cards. Again not for everyone but we earn a little intrest on our money in the bank and do not pay intrest to the credit card companies (for 20 years now) as we take all the discounts.
Not for everyone but it does work.

This week's poll
Do you like the idea of auto insurers switching to a pay-as-you-drive model -- where how, when and where you drive may be monitored?
Yes, I'm all for any approach that can save me money.
No, it's too much like having Big Brother in the back seat.
I'm not sure. I'd like the savings, but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable being monitored.
