May 06, 2008 -- Auto insurance rates may decline

Clark gave out some bum info back in the winter that he'd like to update. At that time, he'd read a report that suggested auto rates would rise. Why? Insurers were supposedly through fighting for market share via low prices and needed to focus on profits again by raising their rates. But the truth is that attempts to raise rates have failed. The Personal Journal reports that insurers continue to sacrifice profit and rates may go down further.

It pays to comparison shop when you're ready to renew your coverage. Take out your declaration page and get several quotes for the identical coverage you already have. You may save hundreds of dollars a year. Always check the shareholder-owned Amica Mutual, but beware they won't write a policy for you if you have a lead foot. Current and recently retired military members should also shop USAA. This insurer has been called the best customer service organization in any industry by Business Week. That's high praise!

I got taken by my present insurer. They were supposed to have included coverage for under or uninsured driver in my policy. I didn't look close enough at the policy quote and ended up getting what I thought was a good coverage price. Upon renewal, I looked a little closer and discovered the missing coverage. When I went back to them to have them include the coverage, they boosted my premium unbelievably high. Sooooooo, I am now saying goodbye to them as a reward for misleading me. Read your policy carefully, what the agent says is in it may not be. I felt the whole thing was just a big scam to try to get my business and then jack the premium up on renewal. "Bait and switch". Progressive seems to have come in far, far below what my present insurer quoted. Like $400 below. This is for 6 months insurance for 2 vehicles. Also, many insurers (including my present one) want to keep your accident record for 5 years (when will it become 6 or 7). Progressive asks for 35 months (one month less than 3 years).

    Dearest Mr. Clark,
Thank you so much for having the credit lock information on your website and for including sample letters. I tried to get the information from the credit reporter's websites, and all they wanted to do was sell me fraud alert for a monthly charge. THANK YOU!
