Laser technology not making inroads in dentistry field

Back in the '90s, Clark first talked about breakthrough laser technology being developed for the dentistry field. He went for a cleaning shortly after and discovered his dentist was very upset with him. Several other customers heard Clark on the air and were already asking about the laser! It turns out the technology is very expensive, but it eliminates most of the discomfort for common dental procedures.

USA Today now reports that less than 10% of dentists use laser technology. Yet if people become aware of the laser, they'll ask for it and dentists may comply just to seize market share. Dentists also would be able to charge more for laser services.

Clark has an old filling that he needs replaced. Why should he go the Novocain route when he can have the laser instead? There's even a special laser for root canals that reduces discomfort and the time you're in the chair by 30 minutes.

Laser could be a very promising option for people who take care of their teeth. But 1 out of 3 people don't get dental care in the United States. We're a developed country, yet we have people with rotting teeth! Clark thinks one possible solution would be to allow dental techs to do a special 2-year program that certifies them for basic dental procedures. Such a plan has already been enacted in Alaska.

Clark, get more info before you confuse people!! You can not take out a filling with a laser---it is for soft tissue and virgin cavities. Works great for that. I did poll some of my patients and they suggested they were not willing to pay extra for it, even to not have anesthesia. I use the Wand for anesthesia--- very thin, no metal syringe, slow technique and my patients do well. I can isolate one tooth to numb versus the whole arch. I have been a hygienist 20 years and then a dentist 22 years. I have watched work done for years by others and they do it myself. The answer is not in lessor trained people to do the work----even the young dentists just graduating after 4 years do not have enough experience to make diagnosis and treatment decisisons. It takes a few more years to become competent. I also learned when going back to dental school , that a 2 year trained experienced hygienist , as I was , still needed more knowledge and training to become compentent, even in the perio area, where I was experienced!! Amazed me! A 2 year drill and fill training does not teach diagnosis and judgement----and behavior management of young children----who would be the ones treated by a short program---leading to more dental trauma for later adults to deal with. That is one of the reasons they go untreated now. Ask the ins companies---only 50 % of the ones with full coverage even bother to come in for ANYTHING! It is fear, as well as money. Go beyond the surface if you are going to advocate something, Clark.

I work in Europe and have had dental laser treatment. I had one cavity filled, a root canal repaired, and one metal filling replaced. A drill was needed for the metal filling but the whole procedure was painless and I walked out with my mouth feeling the same as it did when I walked in. On top of that, when I got there I had to wait all of two minutes before sitting in the chair. Try that in the states. The whole thing cost me a under $200. US news has a good article on Medical vacations. Dental work on vacation outside the states is something to consider also.
  • Lasars in Dentistry
I enjoy listening to Clark however he has absolutely no concept of the training required to competently perform these aforementioned dental services. I would never want a "dental tech" with a two year training to provide any dental treatment on me. Alaska needs dentists who are willing to work in underserved rural areas.

Good luck trying to remove an existing filling with a laser, works great for treating soft tissue problems and cavities on virgin teeth. As for the dentist in the USA Today promoting laser use, why does the gown he is wearing has the laser company name on?

This week's poll
Many recent college grads don't know how to dress professionally for work. Have you ever thought someone in your workplace was dressed inappropriately?
Yes. I've seen co-workers in outfits that show way too much skin.
No. I work in a very relaxed environment and anything goes.
Maybe. Some clothing I've seen on the job is questionable.
