Apr 23, 2008 -- Politicians skirting the Medicare/Social Security issue

The 3 remaining presidential candidates are all afraid to talk about Social Security and Medicare going broke. It's cute for people running for office to talk about how they'll make government efficient and lower taxes. But unless you address head on what's eating up the federal budget, you're not being serious about what you're doing to help the country.

People who are under age 35 shouldn't be faulted if they have more faith in the Tooth Fairy than Social Security supplementing their retirement. But the bigger issue is Medicare, which is now projected to end up in the red by 2019. Social Security, meanwhile, is expected to go in the red around 2041. Why should young people care about something that will happen 33 years from now? Simply put, the feds are going to tax you and employer very heavily to pay for older folk's Social Security and Medicare. If you're younger, you're getting ripped off completely because the money you're paying in won't be available to you.

Younger people have got to save for retirement because they won't have a check coming from Uncle Sam every month during their golden years. Somebody needs the courage to face up to American citizens and tell them what they don't want to hear -- that we don't have money to do all this. Clark feels younger people should be allowed to opt out of Social Security and opt in to a mandatory retirement savings withdrawal. What we can't do is allow people to opt out of Social Security and not save for the future.

Why is it so hard for McCain, Clinton and Obama to own up to the facts as they are and get a plan together? Politicians only tell us only what we want to hear. Maybe most Americans aren't willing to hear the real story. What do you think?

  • Finding an Assisted Living facility for my Mother
I am trying to locate a reputable, credentialed, facility which meets staffing ratio requirements per resident population, who meets all medical requirements for the residents and has licensed dietician/nutritionist who is employed fulltime for meal provision. I am trying to locate such a facility in the Suwanee, Duluth, Johns Creek or Lawrenceville areas within Gwinnett County. My mother is currently in a facility in Union City which does not meet any of these criteria, even though they presented to us that they did. She's been there seven months and has not been provided the lifeline necklace she was promised, has fallen and broken her back and experienced a gash in her arm which the resident nurse failed to change once over three weeks, has been given narcotic class prescriptions for pain which the Doctor says he didn't prescribe for her, has been forgotten for meals all day while the staff had a birthday party, and when she fell, she had to lay ther for 3 hours before anyone came to her room to check on her. She is in County Gardens Assisted Living in Union City and I live in Suwanee/Sugar Hill, Ga and want to move her close to me so I can monitor her care. I just don't know how to make an informed assessment of such facilities and don't know who to turn to for help.
  • Medicare and assisted living
a while back I heard Clark talking about care for elderly and all the qualifications for any assistance. He talked about your current assets & how it would be handled. I need a resource for help and advice. I thought my Mom was eligible for V.A. help, but need advise on assets etc.
  • Social Security
Your right we need a new batch of politicians that are willing to be honest with the American people as well as with themselves. Keep up the good work!.
  • Future of Social Security in This Country
    VOTE LIBERTARIAN......
  • Presidential Candidates
I know you have some strong Libertarian leanings, and am sure your reference to 'the three remaining presidential candidates' was simply an oversight. Although Ron Paul supporters don't expect him to win the presidential election, he remains a candidate. He received 16% of the Republican vote in Pennsylvania's closed primary. Our next President? Probably not. But still a candidate? Most definitely. Please lead the way for our exclusionary Media by including Dr. Paul in your comments when applicable. Thank you!!
  • Soc. Sec./ Golden years
I'm a 25 Yr old male who has recently graduated from college and I understand that I will most likely... okay never get a monthly check from Uncle Same. I agree that we should be able to opt out of S.S. and place our hard working dollars into a retirement savings plan. It's time to teach the youth that government isn't going to be there for us in our golden years. I'm a strong believer in smaller government and more freedom to do what we want with our money! I don't mind paying taxes at all, but when I can't even save money for my own golden years, even my working years, I say to the government "less Social programs and more freedom of choice" This is the time for less government not big "change" government.
  • Social Security and Medicare would have worked if?
    Big Pharma wasn't so greedy
    The AMA wasn't so greedy
Health Insurance Companies were not so greedy. They should get the blame. This is why these programs are going broke.
  • Response to John
Income cap? People making over a 100k are paying close to 50% of their pay to taxes! People need to save more and stop spending money you don't, have plan for the future and don't rely on anyone but yourself. Mommy and Daddy gov't may pass away before you do. Anyone ever look into the "Fair Tax"
  • Social Security
Pur all the politicians in Washington on Social Security and you will see the amount people receive rise and you will see if be here in the future. Don't give it to illegals either.
  • SS & Medicare
AARP HAS TRIED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. THERE IS NO ONE ANSWER, WE HAVE TO DO ALL THE ANSWERS, INCREASE SALARY TAX IS PAID ON, POSTPONE BENEFITS, RAISE TAX, LOWER INFLATION INDEX TO REDUCE BENEFIT. THE BULGE WILL PASS WITH THE BABY BOOMERS. WE NEED UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE. HOW TO DO IT IS NEGOTIABLE BUT IT MUST BE DONE. ORIGINAL CONCEPT OF INSURANCE (WORKS WELL FOR DEATH) IS WE ALL ARE AT RISK. EVERYBODY THROW SOME MONEY IN THE POT, AND THE BEST YOU CAN HOPE FOR IS TO NEVER COLLECT.HOWEVER GREED CONQUERS COMMMON SENSE - INSURANCE COMPANIES WANT HEALTHY PEOPLE NOT SICK PEOPLE, AND WE THE CUSTOMEERS TRY TO GAME THE SYSTEM TO GET OUR MONEY'S WORTH. POLITICIANS WANT TO GET ELECTED AND REELECTED SO NOBODY WANTS TO TAKE THEIR MEDICINE.
  • No way
I don't believe social security is ever going away. Even now, it's providing benefits to around 50 million people (not only seniors, but also via disabled and survivor's benefits), and therefore the government isn't going to - and realistically, can't - ever just shut that down. Besides, a relatively minor tweaking of the taxed income limits and/or tax percentage paid in fixes the problem. But a big issue I see is workers not realizing social security payouts provide only a portion of necessary retirement income, often a very small portion, and therefore they still need to be saving plenty of money regardless. Medicare is tougher. I think a solution will have to be wrapped up with some kind of complete overhaul of our failing healthcare system...whenever any of the politicians finally decide it's important enough to deal with.
  • Social Security
I don't know how much this contributes to the problem, but non-US citizens can get SS & medicare as lng as they work here in the US for a few years. How did this happen? My mother contributed for over 60 years, until the day she died. She never drew SS. Then she died. SS kept all of her contributions. After spending a lot f my own money on terrible medical care, I am now disabled. You wouldn't believe the problems I've had trying to get government "benefits". Yet I watched Spanish speaking people get emergency checks at the SS office. America either yu've changed terribly or you're no more than a myth and always have been.
  • Raising taxes not the answer
We just have to accept the fact that people die and that not everyone can get "the best" medical care. It's all falling apart, Rome anyone? The center can not hold.
  • Clark is off base here!
I agree with Clark 95% of the time but I think its wrong for him to say the money will not be there. For years the Federal gov't. has taken Social Security surpluses and put it elsewhere. The real answer is to raise the income cap. Did you know anything income over 100k is exempt from Social Security taxes. Raise that to $250k = problem sovled.
  • I work to pay for them...
It's sad that I'm working to pay for the retirement and health care of everybody else. I agree with the option of opting out of Social Security and putting it in my own retirement account. What is the big deal about that? Let me have the money I WORK FOR for my own future. It's hard saving up when I look at my LES and see how much money is going to others when it could be going to me. I really don't see why it's such a difficult thing to do.
  • Social Security/Medicare
Many late baby boomers like me are very concerned. FDR had his reasons for providing society a safety net for our infirm and elderly. Opt out/mandantory retirement savings would be fair if achievable in bad economic times as well as good but it seems like another administrative monster costing more than benefits derived. Likewise, I think administrative savings on nixing Medicare would go a long way towards paying for universal healthcare. Wanda Sykes does a very funny skit about granny trickin' for her `scripts that I personally don't want to see become a reality.
  • Soial Security
Why do you think they started retrirement investment like IRA, 401's, 457 etc, just to let you know there will not be Social Security in the future, the government will get out of the Social Securit business, and you will be on your own, even as a supplement. Heed the warning, it's up to you.
  • Social Security/Medicare pyramid scheme
Vote Libertarian Party. Social Security and Medicare are pyramid schemes that would be, as such, deemed illegal if originated in the free marketplace. Nowhere in U.S. Constitution are such things called for. Forced participation should be scorned by freedom-loving Americans. If you're too irresponsible or otherwise cannot cover your retirement and medical costs, that's what charities, churches, extended families, etc. are for. Forced charity with OTHER people's money (taxes) is not compassion.
  • the future of our country
it has proven that every 200 years societies get corrupt. I think ours happened decades ago, but hey who's counting. We need a different party. We have a 2 party monarchy and nothing gets done. We went to war over a simple tea tax in the Boston Harbor, that was like 3 percent or something. People are afraid to speak out and that is why noone has. All the candidates are worthless. Imaging Clinton winning. That means for 28 long years, Clintons and Bush's have run the nation or almost my whole life. They will not change anything. We need someone to tell it how it is. I'd like to see Ventura run. But I agree with the other commenter we so Desparately need other parties. This system we have no is broken and will never be fixed in my book if Repubs and Dems run the show.
  • Future of Social Security in This Country
McCain, Clinton and Obama are all worthless, as is the Republican and Democrat parties. This is the worst choice of Presidential Candidates that I have seen in my lifetime!! It is time for people in this country to wake up!... If they really want change for the better, we ALL must PURSUE and VOTE FOR a third party candidate. Do not fall for the never ending comments that a third party "Can not win"!
