Lifestyle debt plagues most Americans

CLARKONOMICS: Clark is shocked by the level of debt that Americans carry. In the last year, the average American family's credit card balance was up 10%, according to stats from Moody's and The Wall Street Journal. The average balance on home equity lines was up 8%. In some states, the figures are even more horrifying. Credit card balances are up 15% in a year in California and Florida and up 20% in Nevada! What's going on? As home equity lines get shut off, people have turned to using credit cards to maintain their lifestyle. As a result of that, bankruptcy filings are up 30% year over year.

Amassing lifestyle debt is like walking a tightrope with no safety net. There are a lot of reasons why someone may dig themselves into a financial hole. Maybe you had a job loss or medical problems. But these are the exceptions rather than the rule. On Clark's show, you sometimes hear calls from families with children who are on constrained incomes and they manage to make things happen financially. That may mean doing without possessions that might be fun to have; that's the choice they made -- and it's working for them. That may not be the way you want to live. But the reality is that if you're living on borrowed dough, what fun is it to have anxiety whenever you open the mailbox or pick up the phone? The possessions are nice, but the insecurity that comes with borrowing to get them isn't.

What others are saying

  • You have the Power
Lifestyle - What is lifestyle?? Who are you trying to impress with your 'lifestyle'?? You have one thing everyone else wants. GM wants it, Citibank wants it, every business out there wants it. Its money - your money. They don't want cars, or flat screen TVs, IPODs, GPS, Nintendo, monster tires, fancy meals, etc. They want your MONEY. You work hard for it - why do you want to give it away so readily?? They don't want to keep what they have - they want to keep what you have - MONEY. Are all the 'toys' really necessary?? Does it improve your lifestyle?? If yes, then what?? So what! Wouldn't money in the bank improve your lifestyle?? Its not necessarily how much money you make - its how much you save! Accummulate it, hoard it, save it - it is the power that you have. If you give it away, then they have the power. Its that simple.

Want to know how to save?? Look up the definition for this word -'sacrifice'. Once you understand and become well-acquainted with its definition, then you will have money, save money, and make even more money - which equates to power. Try it - it works - no one said it would be easy - so what! It still works.

Look in the bathroom mirror every morning - that person looking back - that's the person responsible for your safety and welfare.
  • RE: Hard Times by Leah
Well, Leah, sounds to me like you dug yourself a pretty good hole and get out. Having a 4 year old and twins on the way without having the means to support them was rather foolish, don't ya think? Children are a huge responsibility and expense. What were you thinking? Or weren't you?
  • Balance
We live in a culture that teaches slavery to debt. Credit cards are being pushed to teenagers and college students more than education. I think that it is all apart of the banking system to keep people in bondage to debt. Credit cards are not good. It is the best "hustle" going now in America. If I give you $100 today and you owe me 120 (20% interest) in 30 days then I have a hell of a business going for myself. That's better than a 401K. I see why the credit card companies are always advertising because they are getting PAID!!! Let's wake up and live within our means not what TV tells us we should have. Go to a 3rd world country and see how they live and you will truly be humbled at our excess. The Proverb is right, "The borrower is slave to the lender." Let's get out of this slavery today!!! God bless<>< John 10:10
  • hard times
I'm a full time college student with a part-time job that ends next week, a four year old and twins on the way. My credit cards were never used for more than bare necessities and to pay tuition and fees one semester so now they're maxed out. Right now, I haven't had the money to pay them because of missing work due to medical circumstances and rent, food and utilities were more important. I get up to fifteen calls a day and frankly, I'm ignoring them until I can afford to do something. I don't live extravagantly by any means and our idea of a splurge is eating out once a month. I'm tired of the phone calls and I know my credit has gone to hell in a handbasket, but really how much worse can it get? I'm more worried about the basic necessities. These credit cards (especially Citicards who started calling 5-8 times a day the minute I was overdue) can wait their turns as far as I'm concerned.
  • wants & needs
awww c'mon spend like theres no tomorrow, maybe the government will bailout the credit card companies when spending fools go bankrupt...practical "lifesyle" advise is know the difference between wants and needs and what you can comfortably live with. even poor people here are better off than people living in other countries. Family encourages a more responsible "lifestyle" otherwise we would all try to have the most toys and the goal would be to die broke (or close to it)
  • re Spousal Credit Card Debt
You could try to put a freeze on, but I would lay down law and say no more or we are done. If not, will end up in divorce usually anyway if no financial responsibility, just a lot more pain and debt ;(
  • Spousal Credit Card Debt
Is there a way I can stop my spouse from getting more credit cards without my knowledge?

This week's poll
NYC health inspectors have been handing out violations to chain restaurants that don't post calorie counts on their menus. What's your take on this?
I believe in what the inspectors are doing. Long live the food police.
This isn't a legitimate function of gov't-paid employees.
I couldn't care less. I'd be eating at home to save money!
