Change your driving habits for better fuel economy

It used to be that weather was the topic of choice for small talk. But these days it's gas and the high prices at the pump. Callers are telling Clark that some gas stations won't let you fill up your tank completely; they cap you at a certain dollar limit. This helps protect them from drive-offs and bum credit card numbers in the age of inflated gas prices. If you go back 3 years ago, the cost to fill up was 40% what it is today. That's an enormous change in a short time.

Since we can't control what we pay at the pump, we'd better start controlling other factors. In Denver, 400 cars have been equipped with technology to monitor how you're driving and let you know how to maximize fuel economy on the road. So far this experiment has yielded a 20% increase in fuel economy. Clark himself has become obsessive about using cruise control, even on suburban drives.

Years before computers were routinely in cars, Volkswagen helped increase fuel economy by 30% in its stick shift vehicles. They had a light that would flash and beep to alert you when to shift gears. Most drivers tend to shift too early and waste fuel.

Many more automated solutions will be coming in the next few years. But for now, it's all about controlling our behavior as drivers. That means no jackrabbit starts. When Clark got his first hybrid, a Honda Insight, he averaged about 58 miles/gallon. On the highway, he was getting 70-77 miles/gallon. It's all a matter of what you're willing to do -- be it drive a smaller car, drive smarter or drive less.

What others are saying

  • Try slowing down!
If you get off the 0-60 and 60-0 on residential streets, the mileage goes way up. Also drive the speed limit!

Here is a website that includes extreme measures to save $ and gas.

    http://www.gassavers.org/
  • Gas
Part of the problem is that oil is on the stock market, and when it goes up on the market bam it will go up on gas prices with in a day or 2. You do not see this fast price effect on say items made with grains, like ceral and bread.

I strongly believe if the government said it would pay up to 80% of the cost to install any form of green energy (wind, solar etc) you would see a boom of green power being installed at homes. They could do a grade pay, so if you install something that gets you 10% of energ from say solar they would pay 20% of the cost, if you paid to have something that has 25% or more green energy they would pay 80%. Getting all those homes with that much energy off the grid would save so much more oil than people driving slower /less ever could.

Think about the effect that would cause, it would be so huge, you would have tons of companies isntalling green energy, so they would benefit, and then all those homes getting a good portion of energy from a green source. It would be a way better return than that stupid 1 hour turn the power off deal that happend just a bit ago.
  • GAS PRICES AND BUSH
I WE WOULD USE THE OIL EVERY FROM OUR COUNTRY,THE WOULD WOULD NOT HAVE TO RELIE ON THE OTHER COUNTRYS HIGH GAS PRICES. WE NEED TO WORRY ABOUT OUR COUNTRY AND OUR PEOPLE,NOT THIS OTHER COUNTRY IF OUR GOVERNMENT SPENT THE MONEY ON OUR COUNTRY AND THE PEOPLE HERE THAT THEY HAVE SPENT ON THE WAR, WE WOOD BE A LOT BETTER OFF AND PRICES WOULD NOT BE SO HIGH. I COULD GO ON BUT I THINK YOU GET MY POINT.
  • Free Society
In a free society the price will have to go up for consumption to go down. At 3.25 gal America is still in the spend & drive mode. At some point, maybe 5 bucks people will sober up.
  • Changing your driving habits?
All too often here in the Atlanta area I have noticed that some drivers are much too slow at acceleration which causes drivers backed up behind them to get stopped at the same traffic light again. Moderation and let's be considerate by paying more attention to all our driving actions.
  • Incorrect Advice in Setup Above
"Most drivers tend to shift too early and waste fuel."

    Not Correct.

It is impossible to "shift too early" unless you "lug" the engine. That would be too early. For some reason there is almost no data on the subject. I have been searching for years and only found some data tonight.

    http://www.jari.jp/pdf/rt2005/09Fu_eng.pdf

In general, the most efficient speed to drive is the lowest speed you can drive in the highest gear.
  • 2 vehicals is the way to go
I have an 86 K10 blazer that gets horrible gas mileage at best -driven only to get my groceries and trips to home depot or really bad weather. the other is a motorcycle that gets 90% of the miles and 50 MPG and is pretty fun even commuting to work.
  • gasoline prices
Our own government will not let us drill for oil on 85% of our shorelines!! Thank you tree huggers.
  • Boneheads!
C'mon people. Drive small cars! Charge people based on what gas mileage they get! Well why don't we burn them at the stake while we're at it... OPEC contorls the oil market through production limits. As demand or global unease occures, traders bid up the price in the futures markets. The futures markets are efficient and no one can control them for more than a few days at best. Our dependance on OPEC is the real problem with gas prices... IF you got 100 mpg OPEC can make gas $20 a gallon by limiting production, nothing to stop them. All other talk is irrelevant, we are dependant on unfriendly market cartels who hate us and control our energy costs. We need energy independance, not punish eachother, ya boneheads!
  • Gasoline
American waste more gas than anywhere in the world. Low milage cars prervail, yet we whine. The solution is in our hands,. Get a high milage car. Obvious!!!
  • The oil increase scam
By the way I do not believe we are consuming a lot more gas then the past few years. I think its the oil traders pumping up the price because they can. Would not doubt that arabs are pushing the price up through our commodity system. I for one drive much less then I used to. I am not the only one. I use the auto that gets the most MPG for the marjority of my optional trips. I think everyone is doing this. I in no way believe it is a supply and demand issue.
The public is getting fed a bunch of baloney on this.
  • A solution to our fuel problem.
Here is what I suggest we do to help stem fuel consumption.

At the pump we should have 2 setups. One pump is for cars that get 20+ MPG these people would get a discount on their gas say 1.50/gallon.

For the under 20 MPG autos they have another pump that charged 2.50/gallon.

That way all you gas guzzeling people can still drive your big trucks to the store for milk.

Perhaps this can be in the form of a tax break/tax increase once a year. That way the pumps don't need to change. It would go by the type of car you drive via auto registration and mileage you drove.

I would also use the extra money that the government received as an incentive for the high MPG drivers. That way the (taxes for gas) would not go in a bottomless pit. Many people want to tax things only never to see where that extra money goes. Simple solution. People will drive less and less their hogs.
  • new car no.--a gas saving device
clark average person canot avord anew car help us get a 50% gas savings device
  • RE: RE: Smaller cars are dangerous!
Actually, even if everyone drove smaller cars, they would still be more unsafe than if everyone drove big cars. Simple physics. I tiny flimsy car still weighs enough to completely destroy another similar sized small flimsy car. The real answer is gasification of coal, we have enough to last a long time. We should have givt. backing of loans to build the plants.
  • Smaller cars are LESS economical
While smaller cars require less gas than larger cars, there are sacrifices that come with smaller cars too. I prefer a larger car that is roomer and more comfortable with larger trunk space for traveling with the family. Smaller cars don't allow for as much comfort when traveling and may cost MORE by having to rent a van or fly when traveling.
  • RE: Smaller cars are dangerous!
The smaller cars aren't the problem. The huge SUV's are the danger to the small cars. If everyone got some sense and didn't have to drive 4X4 to keep up with the Jones we would all be safer with the secondary benefit of saving money!
  • Smaller cars are dangerous!
I'd rather pay for more gas for a larger vehicle that die in an aluminum can for the sake of saving a little money.

This week's poll
The high cost of jet fuel has a lot of people staying at home this summer instead of traveling. Is there a "staycation" in your immediate future?
Yes, I just can't afford a plane ticket and/or hotel room right now.
No, I've saved up all year just to get away for a bit.
Maybe, I have to wait and see how my finances pan out.
