Apr 03, 2008 -- Budgeting annually better than budgeting monthly

Budgeting is a topic that's front and center again for many Americans. Many people think of budgeting like being in prison, but Clark thinks it's freeing. Budgeting lets you reduce your financial insecurity and gain control back. There are great, free budgeting tools online like Mint.com and Wesabe.com.

A Journal of Consumer Research study shows that budgeting annually is better than doing it monthly. That's because there are expenses that pop up over the course of a year that you can't account for on a monthly budget. Data shows that people are far more accurate when they budget annually vs. monthly.

Clark doesn't usually carry any debt, but he still uses budgeting tools to see what happened with his money over the course of a year. Christa, meanwhile, likes to track her finances using a spiral notebook and some online monitoring. Others like to go back to basics using the envelope method. There's no one right answer, but you have to find what works best for you. Do you have a system? Are you doing anything at all to monitor your money? Give it a try.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Another vote for Mvelopes
I agree with the poster who recommends Mvelopes. We have been using it for years and it is helping us to achieve our goals. It has account aggregation featutes, free integrated bill pay, and best of all it is based on the envelope spending method. I'm a little surprised that Clark hasn't tried/talked about Mvelopes. I would like to get his impressions.
  • Dave Ramsey method
what do you think of Dave Ramsey's philosophy? Is it credible in your opinion?
  • Budgeting Made Easy(ier)
I think most books and software go about budgeting all wrong. They make you start with your paycheck, say how much you want to spend on rent, insurance, groceries, gas, and 30 other categories until you see what savings is left over at the end.

    Too much work.

Most people only have 2-3 "problem" areas they need to watch. Mint.com links to all your banks and credit cards, downloads your transactions every night, and auto-categorizes all your transactions. Set a budget up once on restaurants, shopping or wherever your "problem" area is, and Mint.com will email you if you ever exceed it. Easy and pretty painless.

We took a class called Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey and it has helped up make and stick to a monthly budget, pay off over $4000 in debt, and accumulate savings all in one year. Still have a ways to go but his way has really made a difference in our lives. You can go to his website and plug in your zip code to find where in your community classes are being held. His website lso has a ton of info.

The first time you try to write out a budget it won't work. You have to keep working on it and don't give up. Sometimes it takes several months to get it right, but it's worth it. Can't remember who said "If you don't tell your money where to go, you'll wonder where it went."

I can't find anything that works for me, I would like to know an easy way to keep up.
  • Budgeting
Near the end of the year, we create an annual budget for the upcoming year using a spreadsheet, with the details for each month on its own worksheet. Once the spreadsheet is created, it is easy to update as necessary.

I think doing it annually would make it too easy to get off track - you could be too far off the mark to get back on. I do it monthly and use Quicken.
