Apr 01, 2008 -- Credit cards and college students don't mix
College kids are bombarded with an average of 4 phone calls and 5 mailings every month to get them hooked on credit cards, according to a new PIRG study. There's a feeding frenzy because teens are the most profitable of all customers for the banks that issue credit cards. It's unreal to Clark that university presidents and alumni groups are co-conspirators with the banks in trying to demolish the credit standing of our youth. Some cash-hungry universities even make deals with banks to provide them with personal student information and on-campus access to students.
The consequences of this are severe. Clark's senior producer, Kim, ran up $17K of lifestyle debt at college by the time she was 24. She didn't get it all paid off until she was 31. Meanwhile, Citibank and other lenders are being sued in the state of Ohio for handing out coupons for free sandwiches to students. But the catch was students had to apply for a credit card before the coupons could be redeemed. You as a parent have to guide your teens and teach them about the dangers of debt. This should not be a onetime talk; it needs to be an ongoing educational process. Get your own finances in order so you can teach by example.

Teens & Credit Cards
I think college students should be allowed to use credit cards only if - they have a well to do family who can guarantee to pay the bill and as long as the credit limit is $500.
This is just to exposed students to the credit market and teach them how to use credit card wisely.

No I am trying to purchase a home and they tell me I cannot because I do not have a credit score...Help What can I do?
101 plus ways to build credit, but which is the best?
I'm in college, but luckly i have no debt. I'm getting to the point where having no credit is not good at all. i don't know the best credit card to get. Gas Card? Visa? Student? Retail card?
help....
college students and credit card debt
You make a very good point about credit card misuse for college students. However, do you have any suggestions for good choices of cards for students who will use them responsibly I'd like to get my daughter away from her bank debit card and develop a responsible credit history
I loved it
College students should be smart enough to handle their own spending. I was a student at Ohio State where they were handing out those coupons for sandwiches. I signed up for the card, got a sub, then got rid of the card the day i got it in the mail. Ive had a card for 6 years now, am 24, and have never overspent on it or made a late payment. If you're smart enough to attend college in order to get a good job, you should be smart enough to not buy ten thousand dollars worth of furniture and posters that you know you can't afford.
Credit card for college students
Isn't it a good idea for a college student / teen to have a credit card to build up a credit rating? Should it be limited to a certain dollar amount? Are there better charge cards for a young person to have?
College credit card debt
When I was an undergrad I was sent a credit card that I never applied for with a $5000 credit limit. I had NO job and NO credit to speak of yet they sent it to me! At the same time my older brother was working full time making 45K a year (this was 1987 or so ) and was turned down by his bank for a credit card! He didn't have bad credit he just had no credit history. He finally got one by appealing further up the chain of command at the bank with a credit limit of $1000. Meanwhile I was buying beer and designer jeans on mine ! I was also 30 yrs old by the time I paid it off! My parents have perfect credit but never once had this conversation with me regarding the use of credit cards! I have a child headed off to college next year and we have been having this conversation ever since she got her first birthday money in her hot little hand! Thanks for the great service you provide for those of us that failed "personal finance 101 " back in college!
This was an issue 10 years ago, too.
I actually did a paper on this exact subject my senior year of College 10 years ago.The Student Center received income from the Credit Card Vendors by charging them a daily fee to market in the Student Area.I had many friends including myself that signed up for credit cards just for a FREE T-Shirt. Everyone thought it was great in my freshman year.Did you know that Student Organizations are enticed by Credit Card companies to recruit applicants as a fund raiser for their organization?Student groups can receive a flat fee for each applicant they receive. The positive outcome of my paper was that I was able to pass a resolution via our Student Government banning Credit Card Solicitors on our campus.
Debt
I was a college student who was offered a credit card. The problem is that my mother paid it off and she has the canceled checks to prove it but no one will take this in consideration. All I hear is pay the money, but it was already paid. Now my bank account has been froze for a debt that was paid in 1999.
