Mar 27, 2008 -- Metro growth driven by low taxes, affordable housing

There's new data from the census bureau on the fastest growing metro areas. Dallas is the top city and added 160K+ people in a year; Other cities include Atlanta (No. 2); Phoenix (No. 3); Houston (No. 4); Riverside, CA (No. 5); Charlotte, N.C. (No. 6); Chicago (No. 7); Austin (No. 8); Las Vegas (No. 9); and San Antonio (No. 10). Clark finds it very telling that 5 of top 10 cities are all located in places with no state income tax. Texas, in fact, has 4 of those cities. The Lone Star State offers affordable housing, flexible labor laws and low taxes all around. Weather is also a big factor in growth; Chicago is the only cold-weather town on the list!

The bottom line is that if you tax too heavily, you run the risk of making people flee. High-tax states provide for their citizens, but at what cost? High taxes harm long-term economic growth. Clark predicts that you'll see Congressional seats evaporate from high-tax states and migrate to low-tax one. Yet it's so odd that representatives from low-tax states get to Washington and start spending money like they don't remember where they've come from. Must be something in the water on Capitol Hill!

  • Housing in Texas
    Greetings all,
I want to tell you all how great a job you are all doing!Having said that once and a while a bit more information is needed !My ex-wife moved to Texas about 6 years ago( we are good friends , hold no grudges and talk frequently)she purchased a small home there north of Dallas . Every- thing you spoke of the other day is true everything there is cheaper...unfortunetly the trades people are highly un-trained low skill level and very little inspection or very poor inspection(a lot of good ol boy stuff). My ex's home started to heave ,walls were cracking foundation was cracking...ultimatly what was discovered was the original plumber instead of using a $5.00 plastic fitting bowed the plastic soil pipe to its final location ! Of coarse this split at the glue joint letting waste water leak out swelling the ground, all of the home there are slab -on grade! The only way to repair this required excavation through the living room floor...not cheap. The insurance companys reply to a request for some compensation was " Due to the soil conditions, shoddy workmanship, and lack of inspection" typical in this area we are unable to provide compensation. This type of construction is typical there( and home inspectors seem to be home inspectors if they say so) .I believe in time things will change since more Northerners are moving there and are used to and or demand better construction ,but it will take time. If someone cares to contact me please due so.
