Mar 26, 2008 -- Consumer confidence at lowest point since 1973
CLARKONOMICS: Americans of all education and income levels are feeling increasingly negative about the economy. The Conference Board finds consumer pessimism is the worst it's been since 1973. What is significant about that year? It marked the first energy crisis our country faced. Clark remembers being a freshman at a Washington, D.C.-area university in 1973. He had no car and took the bus everywhere. That was definitely the year not to have a car; people had to sit in unreal gas lines as the government tried to control the price of gas and the supply suddenly evaporated.
Today we're in the third energy crisis and paying all-time high gas prices, adjusted for inflation. We're also paying the largest chunk of our budgets ever for food, energy and medical care, according to a Merrill Lynch survey. People often want Clark to forecast the future, which is impossible. Things could get worse before they get better. How you respond to negativity is what matters. When the going gets tough, you have to get your own financial house in order. That's the only thing you have any control over at all. Clark predicts there will be a greater call for volunteerism to help out those who have been hit by an economic train-wreck. But be sure to keep your own finances on the track. You may have to cut down on eating out; use coupons at the store; buy store brands; or not fall for the latest clothing trends.
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.
I just started selling Avon about a month ago. Everyone asks me, "why would I want to sell Avon during a tough financial time for Americans?".
This is my answer:
In very tight times, people tend to go back to products that they grew up with and trust. Kinda like comfort a foods. Remember the best selling cookbooks in the 1970's re-marketing the cookbooks of the 1930's depression era? I do.
Avon is one of those product lines.
gas prices
there is a higher demand in the world today. we have plenty of resources in the us to explore. this is a manufac tured crisis, brought on by th extreme envioronmental movement. ther'ye telling us that we can't drill for oil here and there because we will damage the envioronment. this is idiotic!!!!!
A Number of Industries Are performing - Why Not Say Something Positive About The Economy?
Clark,
Wake up and start bringing balance to your little talks - help educate people and stop trying to scare them! Somr industries performing very well are: Energy: Questar, BJ Services, Exelon, Sunoco, etc.; Retail: Amazon, Avon Products, Starbucks; Employment: Robert Half, etc.; Technology: HP, Apple, Gilead Sciences, Verizon, etc.
Many companies (who employ many people doing very well). The world is not just based on sub-prime - yes banking is hurting, automotive and housing have slowed, but they are not dead and will begin to come back in the Fall of 2008.
You Qualify As Part Of Drive By Media Program To Ruin The Economy
Clark,
I was very, very disappointed in one of your shows last week where you were going "Over The Top" about how hard times are coming just as the major networks are doing. If you keep preaching this Dooms Day presentation it will support the collapse of consumer confidence just as the "Big Three Media" do every night on TV.
You need to provide much more balance in your economic discussions - there are many inbdustries that are doing very well right now such as; healthcare, aerospace and major consulting companies. The current economy is based on a "Global Economy" - not just US and unemployment is runninbg less than 5%.
Your biased "Negative Talk" will help those that do not read or think (that is a bunch of people in our country today) to accept your proposition that they should quit spending and pull back when the sky is realy not falling as you profess.
In closing, it has always been my observation that if you keep talking about a situation (good or bad) it drives you to focus in the direction you push and the good or bad becomes a reality. You need to take your responsibility very serious.
I was one of your supporters/listerners - No More!
Cofidence????????????????????????????
I remember "73" it seamed that the money in the United States just rotted. Pay off the Vietnam war with cheaper dollars. History must be repeating itself, for it seams like all the wheels are letting it happen again because of high fuel prices, same as before. If we had a huge national effort to use alternate fuels like alcohol, start drilling for oil off the coast and in ANWAR while taking care of the environmental questions while transitions to alcohol based fuels would send a clear message to all of the oil rich nations that they might have to eat there oil for we just might not have a use for it anymore. Pass the Fair tax, and term limits for the gangsters in public office elected and appointed might help. Meanwhile the great United States will continue in this death spiral of a even lower standard of living in the future for our Grandchildren and a heavy debt load to boot.
