Mar 26, 2008 -- States champion toy safety proposals

It's a very odd time in Washington, D.C., right now with the Democratic elected officials skewing too far left of most Democratic voters; and the Republican elected official leaning too far right for most GOP voters. Independent voters, meanwhile, are completely disenfranchised from both parties' elected leaders. There's a huge gulf, and it's almost like nobody is speaking the same language anymore! While there's paralysis on the federal level, the states have become the new center of action. Just look at healthcare, the airline industry or the credit reporting arena and you'll see states taking action, not the feds.

The latest example is toy safety. The feds haven't been able to get their act together on this simple issue. So the states have stepped in again. Toy makers are going berserk over a bill in Washington state that would set strict standards for lead and cadmium in toys. There are similar initiatives being considered in about a dozen other states. And, picture this: Toy manufacturers and retailers are even considering a boycott of Washington state to get the state to back down. Who wants to be grinch who stole Christmas in Washington state?!

The big picture here is that our federal government should not be paralyzed because the parties can't get along. We've got a country to run here. McCain and Obama both have spoken about opening dialogue among all elected officials. After all, Newt Gingrich talks to Hillary Clinton! Crazier things could happen!

What others are saying

  • Actually GOP is too far left
    (1) Elected Republicans are too far left according to most of the Republicans I know. (I'm independant).
    (2) This is NORMAL for primary season here in the good old USA!
    (3) Diana, wake up and read your history book circa 1994, if the Dems *wanted* to do more they would be - but they'd rather blame the outgoing president. And why not, they've even got the Republicans doing it :-)
    (4) Anyone want to watch the debate with me tonight? Should be interesting.

Diana has it right - the Dems don't have enough of a majority to get anything done - quit blaming them! I have to disagree with Dawn about 'too much big govt.' - 50 state with 50 different laws is chaos. Finally, Evelyn I am totally with you on China - we should all be label lookers. Buy America first, anyone but China second and China last! Clark, I love you, but we part ways on this subject, with your Chinese glasses and foreign cars, etc...
  • Federal Gov't.
    Clark,
How unfair of you to criticize the Democrats. We DO NOT have enough Democrats to overcome a fillibuster. Anyway, the White House Administration runs the FTC and Republicans care more about big business than consumers. They don't even care about our children. Democrats wants to increase the budget for the FTC and the current Chairperson says she doesn't want it. The whole agency is totally inept. Please quit blaming Democrats and put the blame on the person in charge. GEORGE W. BUSH!
  • U.S. Jobs
We little voters/consumers are the engine that drives the U.S. economy. Flex you might. Contact you senator/representative and tell them you want no tax breaks to go to companies that ship jobs overseas. Then ask your family and friends to do the same.
  • China
I am so sick of trying to purchase goods from our own United States of America! There are so many qualified workers who can give us fabric, electronics, clothing, shelving and many more consumer goods, and they are out of work. What happened to our ability to sustain ourselves. We supplied the world with food for so many years and now we are in debt to other countries. I want to be able to shop for goods produced right here in our own United States of America. Let's do something to make that happen again. Even calling customer service is a pain because we have to speak with people we can't understand and who don't even know what they are talking about - they are looking at a book for direction. Please!!!!
  • States Rights
Isn't it a good thing that states are having to take things over? There's too much big govt. for me....
  • Safe toys
It's hard to imagine a toy manufacturer wanting the public to know that it's out there crusading for the right to manufacture toys that are toxic! Who'd want to buy such toys? I definitely want to know the names of the boycotting toymakers. I abolutely do not want to buy their toys.
  • WA State Toy Standards
While I applaud the thought behind this bill I am a lifelong WA resident and I fear Chris G and her cronies will cave to the Toy Industry and this will not pass. Just another election year play by the Dems. Yes, who are the manufacturers? I wish to boycott them.
  • State vs. Federal regulations
The less Federal regulation, the better, in my opinion. Let the Feds establish basic safety and health standards, as in OSHA, Food & Drug, etc,. and then let the states set any higher standards the voters desire.
  • Which Manufacturers
I would be very interested to know which manufacturers and retailers are considering a boycott so we may excercise our right to boycott them as well.
  • it's nice to do good things sometimes...
As a resident of Washington state, I seldom agree with the predominately Democrat legislature. But as a father of young children, I'm glad to see them putting their foot down on something that is potentially poisoning kids and that should not be a problem to begin with. These standards should have been in place long ago, and anyone who thinks otherwise, even for money saving purposes, needs to look my kids in the eye and tell them they don't care if they die. I know that sounds extreme, but that is the true issue here.
  • Action is better than words
I'm glad to see that the states are acting to protect citizens. I was disappointed however that the airline passenger's bill of rights was struck down as a federal right, not a state right. This seemed very odd to me.
  • America will fall
The democrats don't want anything but their way, and republicans are smart enough not to give into dem's crazy ideas...
