Car repossessions at highest level since the '90s

USA Today reports that car repossessions are headed to the highest level they've been since the '90s. In addition, people are stretching out their loans way beyond the generally safe 42-month mark. A longer loan means that you're usually going to be upside down in your vehicle. This year, 1.6 million cars will be repossessed. Clark recently spoke with a man who does repossessions. These people have a very tough job, but they are just the messenger, not the message itself. It's not the lender in the fancy suit that does the dirty work of repossession.

  • A recent seemingly unjust auto repo
My "child's fathers" truck just got repossessed and I am just wondering what kind of recourse does he have? He made a payment of $325, 5 weeks ago. Then $250 the very next week;$250 the next week, $400 yesterday, the same day of which they got the truck anyway, and they want $525 again this friday. He only has a year and 5 months left to pay on the loan. The truck was purchased November of '05 and he wasn't even 30 days behind after making the 2nd payment of $250 which they never cashed. Now they have $650 of uncashed money orders!!! He fell behind 30 days last friday and they picked up the truck the very next business day!!!
  • Repossession on a Lease Car
When your lease car is repossessed. What can the party do to get their car back? Will it show up on my credit report?

This week's poll
The high cost of jet fuel has a lot of people staying at home this summer instead of traveling. Is there a "staycation" in your immediate future?
Yes, I just can't afford a plane ticket and/or hotel room right now.
No, I've saved up all year just to get away for a bit.
Maybe, I have to wait and see how my finances pan out.
