Mar 03, 2008 -- Digital TV conversion still baffles some

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding the upcoming February 2009 switch from analog to digital broadcasts in the TV world.

Here's the scoop: If you are among the 88% of people who get TV via cable or satellite, it is irrelevant to you that analog TV signals are going away next year. However, if you are one of the 12% who uses rabbit ears, listen up: Your rabbit ears will no longer work as they did come February 2009. You can keep your old TV, but you'll need to get a converter box.

The government is offering each American two $40 vouchers to help subsidize the purchase of the boxes. Please note the vouchers are only good for 90 days.

Dish Network, meanwhile, is offering free converter boxes to people who have the vouchers. Shipping and handling fees of $8.95 may apply.

PIRG recently sent secret shoppers out to electronics stores in about a dozen states seeking info about the digital TV switch. More than 80% of the time they were given false info by sales associates, who then tried to sell them an expensive multi-function box that would have been useless to them. Almost half of the time they also got wrong info about the time table for the conversion.

Stats from other organizations show that about 4 in 10 Americans haven't heard a word about the coming switch. Clark encourages everyone to help out elderly relatives who may still be getting TV via rabbit ears.

what's this?

What others are saying

  • not free
Dish Network charges $59.95 per box plus shipping, minus the $40.00 coupon. $28.95 is NOT FREE!!! RIP OFF!!! Come on Clark, get your info right.
  • "free" DTV converter box (w/gov't coupon)
At the DTVpal site I went to for the "free" converter box I found that the final price after the government ($40.00)coupon came to $28.95. I can buy it locally without paying shipping for $22.00. Why should I order it online and pay more? I was prepared to pay the $8.95 shipping but $20.00 and free have a totally different meanings to me.
  • Dish TV now charges $19.98 plus shipping
    no more FREE!!

Each converter now costs $19.98, so two converters and shipping cost $57.88 with two $40 coupons.
  • Does Dish Network have free converter boxes?
Clark is your information correct or not? If so? How do we get them? Thanks?
  • Analog Passthrough
There's a list of converter boxes at www.dtv2009.gov. The ones with analog passthrough have asterisks by them. But it should be possible to get analog signal with other boxes by using a splitter, a switchbox, and a couple of extra coax cables.
  • which box?
Which DTV converter box will also allow analog signals to go through?
  • Voucher Expires Too Soon
My vouchers expire June 30, but Dish Network is not going to start selling converter boxes until the end of June. Why are the vouchers expiring so soon?
  • which antenna to use with converter box
i found this web site and it was helpful. "antennaweb.org"
  • converter boxes
According to this link, Dish Network will begin offering the boxes in the summer.

(Scroll to bottom of the page and see the fourth question in the FAQs)
  • Dish Network has no converter boxes!
Dish Network is NOT providing converter boxes with the $40.00 voucher.
  • Dish Network, Free converter box with voucher.
Hi. You may want to update this information. I talked with folks at Dish Network and they would be HAPPY to install a Dish at my house...and charge me ? for the monthly fee, but the do NOT have anything to do with the coverter boxes for all of us that want to say with our old TV sets and the converter boxes that will make them continue to work. You might also like to know that there seems to be a shortage of the boxes, I have been trying to get one for over two weeks and every store on the list that came with the vouchers has been out and not sure when they will get more. The way it is going the 90 days will be up before the boxes show up in enought numbers for everyone with a voucher to get one. Is this part of "encouraging" us to get cable or dish? Thanks for all that you do to help us. Lois Neuman

This week's poll
Should apartment complexes be allowed to completely ban smoking -- from the entire property, not just the apartments?
Absolutely, second-hand smoke is dangerous.
No way, that's too totalitarian.
I'm not sure.

Would you pay extra to live in a non-smoking apartment complex?
Yes.
No.
