Feb 13, 2008 -- Natural gas oversupply means lower prices

CLARKONOMICS: The story on energy has been ugly for a while now. Every extra dollar you spend at the pump is a dollar that you don't have for your own life, plus it goes to foreign enemies who may want to harm our country. But here's some good news: Natural gas, which is 97 percent domestically produced, is in oversupply. Just under 6 in 10 people heat their homes with it, including Clark. He also runs his car on the stuff, which emits minimal pollution compared to electricity, oil and other types of power.

Clark regularly tracks the price trends in oil and natural gas -- and the latter picture looks great. We had an affordable winter for heating with gas while people who heat their homes with oil have been hurting.

Don't expect n.g. prices to completely collapse; demand will continue because so many power providers can switch to burning gas to produce electricity. You will, however, see a lot of spin-off benefits for your wallet. Clark's home energy bills have been very reasonable. When he fills his car with n.g., it's so much cheaper than gasoline because the former doesn't have to be refined like oil. With oil, there are so many markups along the way from the ground to the pump. The "crack spread" refers to the markup that refineries puts on their finished product. That's before they ship it to gas stations for another markup! With natural gas, it's like a direct sale from the ground into your tank.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • City of Buford
    Clark,

What type of legislative change would be needed to allow more gas companies to compete in the north Gwinnett area? The city of buford has a monopoly and their rates are outrageous. How can we get these so called "deregulated areas" changed? Their has to be a law against this rule. With the economy as bad as it is, the city of Buford has not tried to help its customers, and most of us do not even live near the city of buford. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!
  • Natural Gas AGL base charge
Is the AGL base charge of $26.95 normal for all providers? Also added to my monthly bill is a service charge from Walton EMC Nat. Gas of $5.75.
  • Stream Energy
Stream Energy awesome. Their rates were the cheapest in March at $.86 per therm. Their customer service is incredible! I was also able to help a friend by being their customer and they can help me with my service. Find someone who works with Stream Energy and sign up.
  • CITY OF BUFORD NATURAL GAS MONOPOLY
MONOPOLY. HOW COME I CAN ONLY USE CITY OF BUFORD NATURAL GAS. I DON'T EVEN LIVE IN BUFORD, I LIVE IN HOSCHTON. IN ADDITION TO THE $300 DEPOSIT WHICH IS OUTRAGEOUS I JUST GOT MY BILL FROM 1/7 -2/9, IT DOUBLED FROM LAST MONTH WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF DAYS. WE ARE VERY DILIGENT W/ THE GAS AND THIS MAKES NO SENSE. IT SEEMS THAT DECEMBER WAS NEARLY AS COLD AS JANUARY SO I DON'T SEE HOW IT COULD HAVE DOUBLED!!!! THE FACT THAT I CAN'T CHOOSE WHO I GET MY GAS FROM MEANS I HAVE TO BEND OVER A TAKE IT. I THOUGH MONOPOLIES WERE ILLEGAL IN AMERICA.
  • unpredicatable Natural gas billing rates
How can anyone estimate thir natural gas bill. Once I comitted to a fixed therm rate my meter usage is factored (upwards this period), first by by the BTU factor which is assessed at 1.03 per cubic foot of gas consumed. What does this mean? That there is 1.03% more energy in each cubic foot of gas. (Over the past 10 years it has never been below 1.02.) Then the Atlanta gas light company raises the rate that they charge for the use of their pipes. Their rate went up over 29% between my last period and this period. Who else gets to jack therir rates up this amount without notice or explanation? My house is cold as it is and despite efforts to reduce my consumption and expense these brutes suck my money from me like leeches - without explanation.

And requests and complaints to the PSC seem like they fall on deaf years.
  • Natural gas new scam
On January 1, I changed gas providers from GA. Natural Gas to Gas South . On or about January 19, I received a bill from Gas South. This bill was for the previous months AGL pass through charge, tax, and ZERO therms of gas use. In addition, I was billed a $5.95 customer service charge despite not even being a customer of theirs. (Note: On my final bill from Ga Natural Gas, I was also charged a these Charges). Upon calling Gas South, they would not remove even the Customer Service Charge despite the fact that I was not a customer of theirs for the billing cycle. In the end, I will end up paying 7 of these Charges for my 6 month term contract with them.

In addition, I know of at least 2 other examples of people having the exact same charging scheme done to them by not only Gas South, Scanna and Ga. Natural Gas, Deregulation STINKS...!
  • City of Buford gas
I looked up rates today and they range from .89 to 1.20. My bill just came today and I figured out my therm rate is 1.48!!!! No choice to change here. How can we change that? or at least get Buford gas to offer better competitive rates when they are a monopoly?
  • Gas South offer
I just received an offer from Gas South for $.95/therm for 12 months fixed using promo code 2405. I enrolled online at www.gas-south.com and I'm getting a $25 visa gift card. Plus they are reimbursing me $50 for my contract cancellation.
  • Stream Energy
I have been very staisfied with Stream Energy's low rates.
  • walton emc natural gas price
I just checked today and they are offering six months @ .97/ therm. Is a six months contract a good idea?
  • Ga Natural Gas prices
10/13/08 -I just lowered my rate with GNG (been a customer for 2 years)from 1.49/therm to fixed 12 mo .99/therm and lowered my monthly svc charge from 5.95 to 3.99!!
  • Scana has .999 also
As a current Scana customer, I called them this morning and they also have the .999 for 12 months or .99 for 6 months. I locked in for 12 months.
  • go with Georgia Natural Gas
the phone number you need to call is 866-665-9464 and the special rate plan you need to say is "12 month fixed 2 price plan. This is from a postcard mailer.
  • go with Georgia Natural Gas
For the past 3 months i have asked my current vendor MXEnergy to simply continue our current locked rate, that we are loyal customer for years now, but each time I asked they said no. So I am dropping MXEnergy and going with Georgia Natural Gas. 0.999 per therm.
  • Natural Gas Prices/Companies
I am currently with Gas South. I have received offers from Georgia Natural Gas and Scana with fixed and variable rate promotions. The best 12 mo. fixed rate was with Georgia Natural Gas, $0.999 per therm for 12 mo. Their customer service fee per month varied from $3.99 to $11.99 depending on your credit. Scana offered $1.159 per therm, $5.95 mo. service charge. I called Gas South to see if they would match Georgia Natural Gas. I received a 1.000 per therm. offer (vs. 0.999)for 12 mo. fixed and my same $5.95 customer service fee and a $25.00 credit to my account. The $25.00 credit was to offset the difference between the $3.99 Georgia Natural Gas customer fee and the $5.95 Gas South customer fee. F.Y.I. - I was currently under the variable rate plan with Gas South. On my last bill dated Sept. 2008, I paid 1.7500 per therm.

  • Natural Gas Prices
Usually on the 5th of every month you can find the latest gas prices at http://www.psc.state.ga.us/gas/pricecard.asp. This allows you to do an apples to apples comparison. One problem that I see is that in the apples to apples comparison they include fees and charges that you may not pay if your credit is good. So keep that in mind.
  • natural gas prices
Please Clark, where do I look to find the best natural gas prices for my home. You advised us last month to wait until September when new prices would be posted. You predicted prices would be lower than what our company was offering in August. So I waited. Now what? My mother is nagging me for an answer.
You're the best. I hope you run for mayor.

  • Natural Gas
Does any one on this board know where to get the best price on Natural Gas this month?
  • Compressed Natural Gas
    where do you buy Cng
  • Long term fixed price for Na. Gas
My Daughter - in Michigan -received word from the local nat. Gas supplier -(Home heating) that she can sign onto a fixed price for Nat. Gas for a five year period.
My first impression is to do it HOWEVER if there is an over supply that might not be good. what does Clark think?
  • Natural Gas
I have been researching both Compressed natural gas (CNG) and Propane (LPG) as possible alternatives to gasoline. I am confused as to whether either of these is more cost effective that gasoline. Different variable have to be taken into account, such as the fuel efficiency of each source. One gallon of LPG/CNG does not necessarily give the same energy output as one gallon of gasoline. Also, if I recall correctly, a "gallon" of either alternative is either in a gaseous form or cooled liquid form; making volume comparisons difficult.
  • Natural Gas
If Natural gas supply is so plentiful why does the price go up every month. Did they repeal the law of supply and demand.
