Feb 12, 2008 -- Maximum Earnings checking account pays 6% APY

Recent news reports have trumpeted how savers are getting their clocks cleaned as CD and online savings rates continue to drop. So many people use the giant monster mega-banks for the sake of convenience and they keep getting larger all the time. But small community banks and credit unions have grown in number as people seek banking with a personal touch. Some smaller banks and credit unions now offer a new oddball checking account that pays up to 6 percent interest APY. They can afford to pay out such a handsome return because the account is, in essence, subsidized by merchants.

Usually called the Maximum Earnings (ME) account, this account can take deposits up to $25K. Stipulations include that you must do direct deposit and at least 10 signature-based debit transactions each month. That's where the retailers come in. Merchants pay exorbitant fees whenever you run a debit transaction as a credit card and sign for it. So the bank, in essence, rips off the merchant and then passes along a part of the bounty to you. This thing could go on for a while until retailers can break the Visa and MasterCard cartel. SmallEnoughToCare.com is one specific website Clark has found that offers the ME account.

What others are saying

  • got to be better than my bank
I'm in the process of firing my bank for false advertising, and, in MY opinion, for stealing fees from my account that were advertised to be free. At this point, I'd go to just about ANY bank, but if this one is legit with 6% interest...why not kill two birds with one checking account?
  • ME Account
You do not need to visit a local branch. I've had ME Account for almost a year now and opened it from Oregon. Fair amount of hoops to jump through but well worth the effort. I'm still getting almost 3% interest (Feb 20, 2009), which is about as high as I've found. Customer service is excellent and quick to respond.
  • SMALLENOUGHTOCARE--not
Maybe the 2 individuals I wrote to don't care, or maybe they don't like my state? but I think they are discriminating by not answering my emails so I can open an account. It appears to be at least a case of false advertising. Maybe they only respond if you call? Surely a violation of the ADA.
  • Excellent Customer Service
I opened my ME account recently (from out of state). The set up was extensive (as I did mine just prior to the new web site going online), but I appreciate the security measures they have taken. I've had a number of questions for them, and I can say they are the quickest of any financial institution to respond to my questions. I have contacted them via phone, e-mail, and chat session. I got connected to a customer service rep w/in seconds. The new web site is the most user-friendly bank site I've ever used, and the chat session was quick. Everyone I've spoken to so far has been extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.
The requirements for getting the 6% APY are really not that out of line. I'm doing nearly all of those things are my other banks already. These other places are giving me anywhere from 0% (bank) - .25% (credit union).
I am looking forward to a long business relationship with Southern Community Bank and Trust. They have thus far demonstrated that they really are "small enough to care". Now let's just hope that their 6% continues for a long time!
  • one catch to ME account
I've looked for a way to open this type of account on-line. It looks like you actually have to go to a local branch. Unfortunately, unless you live in NC or Wisconsin, this is probably not a viable option for most of us...
  • Interest checking
Here is another bank offering 6% checking. 10 debit transactions needed and 1 auto deposit OR 1 auto draft each month.

This is a bank in my hometown.
