Feb 08, 2008 -- Pingo presents cheap international calling options

A listener recently gave Clark a tip about Pingo.com, a website that offers a virtual calling card for ultra-cheap international calling. Please note that Clark has not personally tried this service yet. He's just passing along the information for you to make your own decision. Pingo is not a free service; you have to pay $12 to sign up and are immediately credited with $5 in calling time. So the net initial cost is $7. Some of the cheap rates advertised on the Pingo website include 3 cents/minute (Mexico) and 2 cents/minute (Russia). Clark plans to try this service when he travels to Italy and Switzerland next month. He'll keep you posted!

One caveat: Some users have reported complaints about Pingo. View the company's Better Business Bureau file.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Better the Pingo
Try localphone.com Have batter INT L rates then Pingo. Haven't tried yet as i don't call INT L
  • Sneaky, Untrustworthy Pingo
Pingo sneaks in their fees after they have your money. If you make a deposit, your money will slowly disappear.
They could have an acceptable (not great) service, but they are not to be trusted.
  • Pingo scam, don't fall into this trap.
Pingo charges $1.00 per month maintenance fee. This means by the time you want to use your credit to make a call you may be out of luck. This little detail is not described anywhere. So much for " no hidden fees"!

On top of this, the phone connections I have made using Pingo were horribly bad.

    Pingo: Forget it!
  • Pingo
When Pingo works, it is fine. However, it often does not work and customer service is non-existent.
  • Pingo
I've tried using pingo to call the UK over the past few weeks and it sounds like I'm using two cans and a string. I do not recommend using Pingo at all.
  • Problems with Pingo
I had been using Pingo and loving it for the competitive rates but then all of a sudden my local access # did not work and you can't get a live person on the phone to help. I emailed them and got an immediate response to call the 888 # provided and then got a recording which told me nothing about the problem I was having so beware because while the rates are good the customer service is lacking.
