Jan 28, 2008 -- Cell phone companies revive The Cram

There's something brewing right now that Clark considers akin to a national scandal. The cell phone companies are in cahoots with rip-off artists and they're stealing your money. Here's the background: Do you recall back in the landline days when people were falling victim to "The Cram"? Phone companies would bill them for fake charges attributed to a "marketing" company. These bogus fees would pop up on a page of unregulated charges on a monthly bill. The phone companies would get a cut of the action when they teamed up with these 3rd party aggregators who initiated the charges. Many people would pay year after year without questioning because they were so confused by their bills.

Now this same garbage is popping up with cell phones. The cell carriers are doing courtesy billing for 3rd party crooks that push a variety of messaging services. And of course they're getting a cut of the money once again. People are getting burned in 2 ways, actually, because cell companies are also raising the cost of text messaging. This is a virtually free transaction for them, yet they're raising rates to as high as 20 cents/text message. People are being billed for messaging services they never signed up for. For example, Clark is getting spam text messages ads. The cell carriers love this -- especially if you're not on an unlimited texting plan -- because every spam message is more money for them. If the history of "The Cram" is any indication, the FCC probably won't get involved for several more years. So you must take the responsibility of reviewing your cellular statement page by page every month. Many people just get their bill charged to their credit card every month and never see a statement. Don't be one of them! Get a paper statement and scrutinize it. This is war. They think they can get away with stealing your money, but they can only do so if you allow it.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Cramming incidents added to.
Also wish to ask each of you here who have been swindled....PLEASE, contact the Federal Communications Commission and your state's Attorney General's office and tell him/her what is going on with your telephone bills.

PLEASE do not let this continue happening. These fools need to be getting three square meals a day and free laundry service in a federal penitentiary. I would also suggest contacting your local F.B.I. They already know about this and don't let them tell you that they don't! They made arrests in New York City a couple years ago in association with Verizon and the Gambino family. After all, who perpetrates most identity theft? The Gambinos, the Genovese family and a whole host of illegal Mexicans. Verizon's management team IS involved in this up to their crooked eye balls. Make no mistake about that!
  • Cramming incidents
This has my attention again. I have been getting charged by Verizon for "Directory Assistance" calls. This year and in 2008, charges came on 09/19. In 2008 I was able to prove solidly that I was working in a Verizon facility when 9 calls were billed to my phone. This is a laughable issue. Just today I received a response from Verizon on the issue. A day late and a dollar short as always. I filed charges against Verizon with the F.C.C.

I'm tired of the airheads who do this to every one. This IS criminal, it IS NOPT an accident.

My next issue with them will be this: After 2008's incidents, the technical department told me I could enlist a blocking service for directory assistance for another $6.00 a month. Well....I've paid it since October of 2008 and now I discover that it's for blocking long distance access. I already have no long distance access. I'll use a calling card when necessary. These people just plain swindle every one they can.

I've seen appeals on the internet coming from the Attorney Generals of New York State and Florida State asking every other Attorney who notices to contact them about billing fraud issues involving Verizon telephone company. These people have defrauded their customers out of at least 200 million dollars over a 7 year stretch and continue swindling us.

They've also allowed managers to get by with computer tampering, equipment theft and more. I've sent the F.C.C. my own testimony of illegal occurrences when I worked fro the old "General Telephone." The Cosa Nostra owns the I.B.E.W. who in turn work for the phone companies. Let's face a fact here, the Mob knows no ethics what so ever. Verizon has too many stupid, unethical, opportunistic morons on board.
  • Cell phone scam download charges
The unfortunate fact is the rich get richer, again, by ripping off everyone, likely including their mother. The cell company nor the 3rd parties take ANY responsibilty. I feel I am screwed x3. The cell company, the 3rd party and now the government for letting all this stuff continue. I am tired of all the BS.
  • Verizon bogus charges
I have also had a lot of problems with Verizon recently with bogus messaging charges and I never had the messaging service turned on and they tried to turn it off several times now. Should I send a letter to our states attorney general in?
  • Premium text message rip off
I'm definately interested in a class action suit. To have Verizon charge 9.99 per text that I didn't authorize and then tell me I have no recourse - this is theft. How does one go about starting a class action suit?
  • Verizon
Verizon has been doing the same thing to me.Just by opening the text message Verizon told me that I was signed up for ''JOKE OF THE DAY'' and 2 or 3 other services that totaled $39.98 on my last verizon bill. What a scam
  • Verizon Scam
I had the same miserable experience with a $19.98 bogus charge on my Verizon bill. Their reps told me it was for premium texting from two different providers. They were unwilling to reverse the charges and yet were unable to provide valid contact information for either company. I have absolutely no avenue for recourse and when I deleted the $19.98 bill from my payment, Verizon charged me a $5 late fee with TAXES on top of that! I have letters of complaint with the State Attorney's office, the FCC and Verizon. What a horrible scam.
  • Cramming and other unauthorized fraudulent charges
Perhaps Clark will help the world by providing a class action suit on behalf of all affected users.
  • Verizon
Verizon billed me for 9.99 for premium texting with a company called Predicto. I never authorized it and have never heard of them. Verizon refuses to take any responsibility for what they are putting on their bills. They say I have to contact Predicto who I have never heard of. I have had premium texting blocked on my phone but they will not remove the charge.
  • phones to sign on someone else
family member saying he makes 1,000.00wk all he asks 299.00 up front sign u up. then u are a member and receive checks daily. I don't belive. trying to get other family members in
  • Nickles and Dimes
AT&T Wireless has billed me for five cent and fifteen cent "PayPerUse" Internet Xpress charges on three separate bill since January 2008. When called and confronted they continue to claim that the messages were originated from my cell phone which is a Samsung Model 707A. No such services were ever used on the phone and no one but me has access to the phone.

Are others being ripped off like this? If so how do you stop them? I have had several very long phone conversations with AT&T reps. The charges continue to re-appear month after month even though my account has blocks on text messaging and on internet services.

With several million customers using AT&T wireless how many million nickels and dimes are being stolen?
  • Charges on AT&T Wireless
If you have a Teenager with a Cellphone, be sure to check you bill. If they do some things like MusicID, they get put on the bill in a recurring manner and you actually have to call the wireless company to get them turned off. I had $43.96 in recurring charges on my family bill. THey are happy to cancel and prorate, but not to refund.
  • Unauthorized charges on Alltel bill.
Hi, I am so angry! I got two lines with Alltel in Sept. 07. In Oct they started charging me $9.99 a month for something called Ringaza. I have no idea what it is and never ordered it. Now in March 2008 that added $9.99 for something called Triva Alert and another $9.99 for Game Alert. They agreed as a "one time courtesy" to remove the charges from my March bill, but refuse to remove the $9.99 a month from Oct. through January for Ringaza. I have had it with them. I have spent numerous hours trying to get this corrected. They have me a number for Ringaza, but no one ever comes to the phone. It's eternal hold. I know this is a scam, but I don't know how to get my money back. Any help would sure be appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Sheri
