Jan 07, 2008 -- Used cars will be a steal in 2008

Car prices are headed into a free fall. Records show that sales were anemic in 2007 -- the lowest they've been in 9 years. Now comes word that '08 sales are expected to be even worse! So the opportunity for car buyers right now is tremendous. Car dealerships are in complete turmoil because there are simply too many of them in the United States. Manufacturers, meanwhile, are trying to guess how much they should slow production. But they won't be able to dial back quickly enough. The Financial Times reports that the best opportunities in '08 will be in used vehicles, not new vehicles. There's a huge surplus of used vehicles because of repossessions, trade-ins or leases that have ended.

While Clark loves used cars, the only danger is that you'll buy someone else's trouble. So do it right from the start: Get the vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic -- even if it's been "inspected" at a dealership such as CarMax. Always beware that you buy as is when you buy a used car. In fact, salespeople in some states may be allowed to lie to you about the past history of a vehicle. So which dealerships are trustworthy? CarMax is one company that's beloved by Clark. They researched what people hated about the industry and eliminated it from the buying process. In Europe, a man who heard about Car Max opened a clone. Now it's the fastest growing dealership chain over there. You can't go wrong when you treat people right and make everything simple, honest and clear.

What others are saying

  • Prospective Carmax Customer
I am in the market for purchasing a used car from Carmax. It seems that the people with the negative opinions of this company do not hesitate to "shout it from the rooftops". However, people who have had positive experiences seem to rarely comment about them. I personally know people who have worked @ Carmax and purchased from them. I have recieved positive feedback from them regarding the quailty of the cars, customer service, and purchase transaction. To me, it seems that some people are expecting a brand new car @ a used car price. In my RESEARCH, I've found that others (who have also done their research) realize that Carmax cars are slightly more that your regular ABC used car dealer. They realize that Carmax has cut out the "game" of car buying and offers more than your average used car dealer. Some conveniences are worth a little extra. It's just business. My advice: get your car checked BEFORE you buy it AND do your research.

** @ John: I do not doubt that if it were an economical option for someone, they would purchase a new car over used... despite the immediate value depreciation**

You get what you pay for
  • new cars > used cars
just buy new cars ... problem solved
  • CARMAX SUCKING
    CHECK THEIR PRICES!
    THOUSANDS MORE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE!
    NOT HUNDREDS,THOUSANDS!

You cannot have a vehicle inspected by your own mechanic before purchasing a car from CarMax. You either have to bring your own mechanic with you and have him look at it on the lot, or purchase it with the 5 day money back guarantee and then take it to the mechanic. If your mechanic tells you there are issues that CarMax missed, CarMax will address those issues. If he tells you not to buy the car, you can return it. The only catch is if you paid cash or wrote a check for all or part of the down payment-it takes weeks to get your money back. You can avoid this by financing the whole thing and then, if your car checks out, redoing the paperwork with something down or pay off the balance with a check. Although all CarMax cars go through a certified inspection, sometimes things get "missed", which I am sure is the same with any dealership. I would recommend an extended warranty, but check the manufacturer first and see what they would charge, because CarMax makes a lot of money on their warranties. If you are going to finance, so it with a credit union and take their extended warranty. If you really get a lemon, CarMax will take the car back in the interest of good customer service even after several weeks if it has been back in the shop for the same issue several times and they can't resolve it and get you another vehicle. There is a Corporate Consumer number you can call also if you have a complaint about how you are treated, and in my experience, Corporate takes these complaints seriously. If you wonder why I know so much about CarMax, I am a CarMax retiree after 8 years in sales.
  • car max has issues
My soninlaw bought 2 cars from car max, both had issues.
  • Your recommendation of CarMax is off!
I recently followed your advice to try CarMax when I was in search of a used car. It was the worst car buying experience of my life! My son and I documented the literal dozens of lies our saleman gave us in an effort to sell us a car. We finally ordered a car from Nashville paying $200 to have it shipped. Would you believe they LOST it? It took them 2 days to "find" it and told us more lies about the incident before I finally pressured them into admitting it was on their lot the entire time! The manager refused my request for another salesman. He wouldn't even listen to me. They "claimed" their mechanice checked out the vehicle on 3 different occasions. The driver's door was so loose it sounded like it would fall off. The stereo did not work. The rear tires are messed up. I wrote to the corporate office with a day to day journal of how we were abused by their people. No response after over 2 months. You need to rethink your opinion of CarMax. I will never return.
