Jan 02, 2008 -- AT&T delivers on naked DSL deal

AT&T has finally made good on their promise to offer naked DSL. For those of you who are unfamiliar, naked DSL is a term originally coined by Qwest to describe having high-speed Internet without a landline. AT&T was required to offer naked DSL as part of their agreement to buy BellSouth. Naked DSL typically appeals to younger generations like his college-age daughter or his 23-year-old producer Joel. For years, the monopoly phone companies resisted giving people the chance to have high-speed Internet without a telephone line. But technology has a way of making things inconvenient for monopolies. Clark still has a landline at home that his wife refuses to give up. Even after finding the best deal, they still throw away $360/year -- even though they only use it about 2 minutes/month.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Naked DSL
I've had naked DSL for almost a year now, and I love it. Although AT&T didn't advertise it, I just happened across it by reading their ENTIRE website, and the "fine print", and lucked across it. I immediately inquired about it, and figured out how I could use it with my Magicjack. Everything works perfect, and I learned how to fax using my Magicjack and my naked DSL....though I'm finding it stressful not being able to fax in very, very long distance places, but that's fine, I generally work around that by emailing my friends with fax machines and landlines and letting them fax for me whenever needed. I don't miss having a landline....for what?....I have my cell phone. It's soooo much cheaper with naked DSL, and Clark, the appeal is not only to the younger generation. I am a baby-boomer, and I have it.
  • landline horror
Clark, I FEEEEL your pain. My wife, too, refuses to give up the landline. We have two cell phones, the internet, and satellite tv...and the silly $65/month landline to go with it all. We keep it, she says, in case 1) there's an emergency and 2) our cell phones magically don't work! The planets could align, after all! $400 a year, for false security. Just shoot me...

  • ATT - $10 DSL
The $10 deal is available at the ATT website if you're in the "right" service area (enter your phone number into the site and it'll tell you whether or not the number is in the right service area). You'll have to subscribe to ATT's phone service and be a "new" DSL customer (they define "new" as not having DSL service from ATT or Bellsouth within the last 12 months). The least expensive phone plan listed as of today is about $18 plus several other fees & charges. I figure when it's all said and done, you'll spend about $35-$40/month... so much for the $10 deal. Here's the link (which is subject to change, LOL): http://www.bellsouth.com/consumer/inetsrvcs/index.html. Comcast and ATT are determined to keep us close to $40 minimum for access to the internet. I'll surely be happy to see the new technology and competition when it finally gets here!
  • Naked DSL
The line to the house was down when I ordered AT&T naked DSL. They performed wonderfully. Ran a new line to the house THE NEXT DAY and provisioned DSL the same day. The DSL modem and software came within 3 business days and everything worked great- 6 kbps for only $35.00 a month. Still needed a home line and went with MagicJack which is simply AMAZING - home number & unlimited local and long distance for less than $1.70 a month. So for less than a POTS line I have both.
  • ATT
ATT is still not available anyplace I try to get it. I am looking for the $10 deal that was promised.
  • Landline phones
I have Verizon. Are they required to provide Naked DSL?
