Dec 11, 2007 -- Halt the growth of ID theft with a credit freeze

The latest figures show that ID theft continues to grow at an alarming pace. The feds report that 8.5 million people had their identity stolen last year. But other private industry reports put that number between 12-15 million last year. ID theft can range from a minor aggravation to a full-on tragedy. In the latter category, Clark has heard numerous stories over the years of ID theft taking place within families. There are instances where a father will steal the ID of a son, or a mother of a daughter.

So what can you do about ID theft? Try freezing your credit file. Credit freezes are now available in all 50 states from all 3 credit-reporting bureaus. See our credit freeze guide if you're having trouble navigating the often-confusing application process. Credit freezes shut down ID thieves cold. A "perk" is that you also shut down your ability to make an impulse purchase with a new line of credit! You'll pay a nominal fee to do a credit freeze or thaw. But the cost will be nothing compared to the hassle you could have if you leave yourself unprotected. A cautionary tale comes to us from Britain, where the government recently lost the data files of 25 million people in one fell swoop. Now criminals have all the info they need to wreak havoc. The British prime minister is understandably facing a firestorm of protest.

What others are saying

  • Identity theft more than just financial
CREDIT FREEZE is not a guaranteed protection against Identity Theft!!!
The credit freeze is rarely even enforced or considered by pre-approved credit offers and so not a guarantee against becoming a victim.
I am certified as an Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist and have more knowledge in this area than the average person. I am extremely concerned about the view point of America regarding identity theft. I just want to let you know that the Identity Theft problem is very significant and getting much worse too. The criminals are getting even more clever with the methods used to steal another person’s identity. The trust of a consumer must be more careful in daily activities because of the use of personal information is scary. The incidents of bank tellers, government employees, waiters and waitresses using skimmer devices for credit cards, and even law enforcement being accused and eventually convicted has gone up significantly. I seriously would suggest reconsidering the view of having a form of protection against identity theft. The service must be complete and provide more than just a monitoring service. A service that just monitors activity of a financial nature and expects it to stop identity theft is like having a smoke alarm and expecting it to stop a fire!!
Identity theft involves more than just financial information. Driver License, Social Security, Character/Criminal, and medical identity theft also exists.

Credit freezes ONLY prevent some financial identity theft but leave you exposed and subjected to the other forms without protection.
Awareness is key and monitoring is important but this is only the start……not the end.
A true source of protection (an Identity Theft Shield) is needed with a means of providing restoration services if become a victim.
  • CREDIT FREEZE !
NOT exactly sure what info Clark is broadcasting about the Credit Freeze on air, BUT as of 15 NOV 2008, for TEXAS residents, this is what I found.

TRANS UNION. You can sign-up online for the FREEZE online at Clark's linked site and there seems to be NO CHARGE even without a specific incident of ID theft.

EXPERIAN. Allows online sign-up at Clark's link BUT without ID theft charge is $10.83 per person.

EQUIFAX. Has online sign-up from Clark's link, BUT without ID theft after filling out application page was told to MAIL specific documents into Atlanta for actual setup of FREEZE.

Little disappointed by this though Clark said it could ALL be accomplished online ? Also, thought that there was a lowering of cost to zero ?

QUESTION. Should married couples using different surnames both sign-up ?
