Nov 19, 2007 -- Get unlimited calling for $40/year with magicJack

Clark's gotten a couple of tips from his listeners about a new product called magicJack. This product offers unlimited local and domestic long-distance calling via your Internet connection. The cost is $40 for the first year and about $20 for subsequent years. The way it works is very simple. You plug your phone into the magicJack and then plug magicJack into your computer's USB port. It takes about a minute to load up the first time, but once it assigns you a phone number you're on your way. Clark's very happy with the service so far, but about a third of people he calls through magicJack report poor sound quality. If you're cheap and want to be a pioneer, you can buy this now. And if the company goes bust, you've lost $40 bucks -- not the hundreds some people (including Clark himself) lost on SunRocket.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Magic jack to foreign countries
We bought Magic Jack at a retail outlet for $40, which buys the device and the 1 year of service. We had a very difficult time getiing it to work, and as I suspected, the problem turned out to be conflicts with some software IN OUR COMPUTER. It took 3 sessions of about 1.5 hr each time with the magic jack online chat help to find the problem and fix it. I must say the online help service was very professional. They stayed with me and were very polite and helpful, and finally located the problem. Now the device works every time perfectly. We have high speed internet (which I think is critical to the quality) and every call is crystal clear. The best part is that my wife is African and she needs to stay in touch with family and friends at home. She calls to Africa and the calls are the best qualtiy she has ever heard! Better than with our traditional land line (which we dumped). She buys minutes from Magic Jack, which are about 40% cheaper than the most economical minutes she could ever find anywhere else. Overall, I have to say we are very pleased with this product and recommend it highly. If you are having problems, it is likely to be with your computer internet connection or the configuration of the software on your computer. Contact thier chat help and be patient, it just might give you better quality calling for a lot less $$$.

I've had mine for two days now, I have Vista no problems since I went on their website and did the update.
So far so good - I got a local area code no problem. Maybe they have fixed the issue. My area code is metro Atlanta 770. I'm impressed so far, will check back later.

I ordered 1 MAGICJACK received 2. Billed credit card for 2 &$79.85) the exact dy. ordered and not yet received.Terrible time finding out how and where to return the extra.Returned it but they charged my credit card $55.29 Then credited $59.90 & $4.19. Why??? It still leaves them owing me money. I get on site and get several people and then they either hang up or get disconnected. This a.m. tried to get a chat person but no way. As to the one I kept sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, certainly not what THEY SAY on their site. Also they are deceiving in what they say about the way they charge your credit card. Anybody that can help me get my money?????
  • MagicJack is terrific
I have been using MagicJack for 6 months now and love it even though I had an out of state area code for some time. Just got my area code so I am set. I have had no problems with the connection, only trouble is I have to remove it when restarting my computer and then plug back in the USB connector once the computer restarts. With this I now have a permanent home phone line and for just $20 a year for unlimited calls.
  • MagicJack is great
True, when I first received my MagicJack there was not a local area code for me. I picked another one and although it would be long distance for others to call me I was able to make calls and save minutes on my cell phone.
As of last week there is a local number available for me and I was able to switch at no fee. They allow one chance at no cost.
A problem I did run into was that I could not call my MagicJack number with a Verizon or Sprint cell phone. It was strange because I could call it with a land line and with Cingular cell phones.
I contacted live support and it was resolved.

B+ There are two high speed Internet options at my home base. One is wireless, one is direct wired. Both work well. The wired one works better. The wired connection is also a higher speed. I've also used it at the airport with my laptop and everywhere and anywhere that I get a wifi connection. It's never failed although there have been a few garbled connections when the signal is weak.
No, there aren't area codes for every location but in todays world when calling plans allow calls to all area codes for the same price, an LA or NEW YORK City area code is not such a bad thing. I live in North Dakota and have a NYC phone number. If area code matters that much to you and you can't wait for your's to be added. Pay for the alternative!
  • Magic Jack
I've had mine since 2-08 and still no usable area codes. Tech chat is polite but no help. Company phone no. at the BBB site is no good. Is there a REAL phone number for these people? I wanna TALK to a CS person!!
  • Magic Jack
I've been using it for about 2 months. On the whole it works very well, considering I call my mother in Canada every day. Can be a real money saver....... from an ex Vonage customer.
