Nov 09, 2007 -- Clark's shaving, eyeglasses cheapness rankles some

Clark's cheapness has set off a couple of recent firestorms. Syndicated financial writer Greg Karp recently wrote about Clark's use of a single 17-cent razor for a year. Last March, Clark graduated to his second razor. But spending 34 cents on blades for two years is pretty good, don't you think? Yet many people have expressed that they think this is cheapness without a purpose because his razors are so cheap to begin with. In a way, Clark agrees -- but he'd definitely be saving a lot over time if his blade of choice was an expensive one. Other people are upset with Clark over the Zenni Optical issue. For those of you who don't know, Zenni provides deeply discounted prescription eyeglasses starting at $8. Clark himself wears progressive lenses from Zenni that cost him $41. But some people wonder how they can be any good if they're so cheap. Clark's friend Jim Strickland, an investigative reporter for WSB-TV, recently did a story about eyeglasses where he compared Zennis and a number other more expensive brands. The Zennis had perfect prescriptions versus the glasses that were filled at well-known optometry chain stores. The message here is that buying cheap glasses does not automatically mean you'll get bad quality. Consumer Reports recently revealed the three best places to have your eyeglasses prescription filled: At an independent practice where the optometrist has his or her own dispensing operation; at a Costco location; and at the For Eyes Optical discount chain.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • eyebuydirect.com is a lot more fun!
People, had a great experience with eyebuydirect.com and now they hold my prescription eyeglass loyalty. To be honest, there are few online retailers out there which I have had such pleasurable experiences with. I don't know about Zenni, tried them a couple of times and it seems like a lot of people have been having some issues with their customer service and quality.
  • 2 plastic frames from EyeBuyDirect.com
eyebuydirect.com delivered two superior frames; total order $49, within 6 days, prescription was 100% accurate. love also the case and cloth it comes with. thanks Clark.
  • wow
Using a car for business promotion is a good idea.wedding invitations it can be very inexpensive with the use of promotional bumper stickers and magnets.bridesmaids dresses People will see your logo when the car is parked or moving.
  • Zenni glasses are okay
I got some Zenni plastic 10 dollar glasses last year, they worked fine as a back up pair, but the paint started peeling before a year was up...A little scary because these glasses are from Hong Kong and who knows whats in the paint.(.i.e. lead).:)
  • shaving
I change razor blades on my birthday each year. However the latesr change was necessary due a faulty connection between the blade and the handle.
  • Don't do it!
I know someone who tested the lead content of his frame that he ordered on line and found it to be dangerously high! Lead testing kits can be purchased at Lowes and Home Depot. There is a reason why they are cheap!
  • Zenni
Now have 3 pair, Progressive Titanium, a back up pair with my regular prescription and a pair of prescription sun glasses. got all three for less than $120. They fit and I can see. The one pair of progressives would have been $360 at my local shop.
  • Zenni Optical
The order took 3 weeks to receive. I called 2 times and was told that the information on their website was incorrect and that it would take longer than indicated. When we finally received them, they were fine. They are for my daughter and the one problem is you do have to go somewhere to have them adjusted for length over the ears.
  • Zenni
I heard Clark and decided to give them a shot. Was very clear that the order would take a long time to arrive.

I LOVE my pair from Zenni and agree with those stating that the expensive pair is in the draw.

I have a severe high power prescription and were progressives. I find that the Zenni's are fine.

I showed them recently to my cousin who is an Option and he felt that they were good frames and quality lens and he explained that the price is cheap because of the overseas.

He also said that no matter what the name on the frame, that all frames are made in either China or other parts of Asia. Zenni's frames are the same that you buy in the brick and mortar store just without the name added.

Zenni is very clear that it will be a least a month before things are shipped and for mine prescription it is about 6 weeks. If you want faster pay more, for me I have just ordered 2 more pairs.
  • Zenni Optical
I purchased a pair of eyeglasses over a year ago and have been well pleased with them. I have a special request on my order and they filled it as requested, glasses came within two weeks. Guess with Clark endorsing them, business is very good and now leading to delays in shipping.
  • Zenni finally delivers after threatening to dispute. .
My glasses with progressive lenses were ordered 12-28-08. they did not arrive until 2-13-09. In between, at different times I emailed service@zennioptical.com and sales@zennioptical.com. Both email went unanswered. I tried calling but the nonhuman answering service delivered me to a message box that was full and would not accept new messages.
Finally, at wits end, on 2-9-09, I sent one last polite email to both addresses documenting all of my attempts to contact them. Indicating that a response with a delivery date was required within 48 hours or I would be forced dispute the charge to my credit card. Twenty minutes later, I received a reply form the service@zen...address saying that my order was held up in customs and that they had remade my order and shipped it three days earlier on the 6th. The truth is my order was postmarked in California on the 10th.
On a positive note, my prescription was perfect and the optician I took the glasses to for adjusting was impressed with the quality.
  • Zenni no-customer service
Ordered my glasses mid January. Immediately charged to my credit card. No glasses yet. Have emailed the customer service department without a response. Have tried multiple times to contact them via phone with no luck there either. Unless I am blown away by the glasses IF they ever show up,,I will not do business with this company again. Clark should do another show about Zenni and warn his listeners that their service is HORRIBLE.
  • Hope my glasses prove better than their service!
I ordered my new glasses Jan. 9, 2009 and although I am still without them a month later I am dissatisfied with Zenni's service. They are exceptional FAST when it comes to charging my credit card but really slow when it comes to getting back to you on an order. Their telephone# listed in their confirmation email is no longer in service so then I called their 800 number. After 3 days of calling and no one ever answering or emptying their message box so that I could leave a message as they had directed, I wrote them an email and told them if they did not respond in 24 hours I was canceling my order. I finally heard from them on Feb. 7, 2009 (48 hours later) telling me that because of the Chinese New Year they were backlogged and that my eyeglasses would be shipped via the HongKong Post. IF only I had followed my gut feelings and not decided to take a chance on CHEAP I wouldn't be going through this right now. Yes, the glasses are cheaper than I would have paid at Costco or anywhere else but is all this hassle worth it? Actually it is a pretty expensive lesson ($68.00) I won't venture to do again. It will be interesting to see if I ever get my glasses and if so will I be disappointed like so many other are stating here on this blog. No Clark, I won't be tooting my horn about Zenni's or you anytime soon
  • glasses finally came in...but can't see with them!
I finally received my glasses the other day-- ordered them 12/23 and after about 6 weeks of waiting, they showed up....the only problem is that the left lense is completely unfocused. They obviously got the PD incorrect...go figure...now I can only imagine what I have in store as far as trying to return them.......supposedly you can get 50% back, so bottom line, it is a relatively inexpensive lesson learned....I will be going to my optometrist this week to order new glasses.......
  • Zenni Optical
Best Value ever! Make your metric measurements of the frames/lenses. I use progressive lenses and thru Zenni the lenses are $29 and thru my local discount eye glass store they are $200. I bought titanium frames with progressive lenses and the clip on shades including shipping for $61. Took a week.My last pair thru ... was over $300. Thanks Clark!
  • Credit Card Orders
I paid for my glasses via my Bank of America visa...and still have not received the glasses (as indicated below). I talked to a BOA rep this AM and I have 120 days from the date of purchase to file a complaint with BOA to have the charges contested. The bank has to give the company 30 days to rectify the situation before they reverse the charge to my account. I am giving Zenni another few weeks before contacting BOA again.
If you paid by CC, you should check with the CC company on their policy for filing a complaint.
  • Zenni Optical
I ordered my glasses on line on the Dec. 26th, it is now Jan. 27th and when I finally got ahold of the company they just say they are back logged. I don't imagine I will order from them again. You should stop advertising for them I feel as if I am ripped off. There is no definite aswer they cant commit to any date they will be sent. This is not right.
  • Non-delivery & no answers
    Clark,
You really struck out with Zenni Optical; have you even READ their reviews? They have an average customer satisfaction of only 65%!
I myself have had nothing but trouble with customer service. When I first placed the order, I had a question. I tried to call on Friday, January 9, after 9 am Pacific Time (their time) but their answering machine picked up all day, stating they were “closed for the holiday.” WHAT holiday??? Now, I haven’t received my easy-to-fill, single-vision, no-bells-and-whistles glasses by the expected due date. When I called to request a tracking number per their instructions, I couldn’t even get an answer on where they were; “the computers are down.” For two whole days now.
I’m not holding my breath. Hopefully, Chase Visa will get me my money back. What a waste of time and effort.
  • Love zenni
I love my glasses from Zenni, one regular pair and one pair of sunglasses. Granted, my rx is simple but I'm thrilled with the product and price.
  • I am a licensed optician, and I have checked prescription lenses coming back from Zenni optical. They prescription is hardly exactly on point. The anti-reflective coating also starts coming off after a couple of months making the lenses worthless. Ok so maybe you can guess at the pupillary distance which can draw your eyes inward or outwards if you are off, but how can you guess on a progressive lens you if don't have the frame on? Its just not possible to get the progressive in the right spot. The same frame can sit higher or lower on different people. Its also takes several months in most cases to get the glasses back that our coming from China.
  • Update: Zenni-Non Delivery!
After much patience, I finally got through to a rep(you have to call early and wait!). The rep told me they were going to remake my glasses because the original have not been released from Customs and were given conflicting information on the release date. They told me to expect my glasses in less than two weeks. OK that was on Dec 5th. One week later, I did get a tracking number for the USPS website. Checking the website:

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on December 12, 2008 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

This information has not changed since the 12th, almost one week. This indicates the Post Office was notified, but has not received any package.
I did receive a reply to an email this morning, telling me to contact them in five business days if I do not receive my order.
THREE MONTHS and the Only thing I have is a bunch of empty promises and emptier pockets.
I would stay away from this company. It seems like I spun the wheel and got all WHAMMYs.
  • Zenni-Non Delivery!
I ordered a pair from them on 0ct 15th 2008 for my elderly father. As of today I have not received them.
I was informed on the 27th of October that my order was shipped from China via email. On November 7th, I was told about a customs hold was delaying my order. I received an email response stating my order was stalled in customs and should be released within a week to ten days. The email also stated the following:
“…All of our shipments are made 1st class, USPS. When the mailing label is created with the US Postal Service software, a tracking number is generated, and automatically emailed to you at the address you entered on the order form….” I never received a tracking number. A week later, I called Zenni Optical. After great amount of wait time, I was told by a rep the order has been released and I should expect delivery in 3 to 5 days. After a week of no merchandise, I called again only to get a recorded message on stating that there are no reps available and to leave a voice message. This was impossible because the voice mail box was full. After sending numerous of emails, I did receive this response “…There are lots of orders been delayed due to the custom hold, and after the release we are now working extra hours to expedite the delivery. And please be assured that you can receive your order around Thanks Giving Days…” Thanksgiving day has come and gone and still no glasses. Because I have never received a tracking number, I tend to believe my order has not even been sent. As of today, I have no glasses! I had an invoice of $100.00. The lack of communication and the non delivery of goods have left a queasy feeling in my gut. Rip Off? I don’t know, but if it sounds like a duck…. I am beginning to regret not going to a brick and mortar store. I may have paid more but at least I can talk to the people face to face.
  • Zenni Glasses
I just received my first pair from Zenni and the prescription was right on! My DR. when giving me my prescription was really negative about it and said Good Luck! Well I was getting tired of spending hundreds of dollars on eye glasses, and now have found an outlet to good good glasses at a really reasonable price. I Love them and am going to order another pair or two.. My cost was less then 30.00 w/ bifocals.
  • Zenni Optical
I received my $20 glasses in the mail 12 days after my order. One of the nosepads had broken off, and according to the website, I can get a replacement. The prescription appears to be right, but I did have to bend the frame to get a good fit on my head. My wife liked the style. Will try to report back on how the nosepad replacement goes...
  • PD
I had concerns about the accuracy of my PD measurement. I had measured my husband's and my own while looking in the mirror. I was walking by the optical center at Wal Mart and asked if they would measure it for us. He did it right on the spot free of charge. It turned out I was off 1mm on my husband's PD and was dead on with my own measurement. It's not as hard as it seems.
  • eyeglass reglaze i.e. new lenses
If you are having trouble getting your PD and you don't want a hassel with your doctor, send an old pair of glasses to www.selectspecs.com,for re glazing, they can determine youd PD from your old glasses. Your PD never changes, once you have it, you have it for life! and your doctor will never be the wiser. ha ha!
  • Great glasses deal
Perfect experience with Zenni Thanks Clark for the inside track on Zenni. ME an my whole family love our new glasses. I work in a school and I have spread the word about you and Zenni. The parents that did not know about it and where shocked to see the money saveing deal's from Zenni. To make a long story short I am seeing less tape on glasses at my Elem. School than I was. THANKS
  • Progressives from Zenni
After hearing Clark recommend Zenni, I took my Sam's Rx and shipped it off. A very nice Titanium frame with progressive lenses cost about $68 which absolutely thrilled me.
The final product was a bit less thrilling. The reading segment of the lens was a sliver at the bottom that I could only bring into my field of vision by grabbing the lenses and moving them up on my face. I asked the gal at Sam's to check them out and her instrument couldn't even find the reading segment! So, I sent them back to Zenni who insists they're properly made but will refund 1/2 of my purchase price if I really don't want them.
I've heard others who are happy with their Zennis but I'd be reluctant to ever order or recommend them to someone whose friendship I valued.
  • Zenni Optical & PD
Perfect experience w/Zenni. Purchased corrective lenses for my daughter which arrived promptly and exactly to her liking from what she had ordered online.

Unfortunately my optician, optometrist and ophthalmologist would not release my PD and now I can't take advantage of the cheaper prices. Is this legal? I WILL contact the licensing board and take other measures as well, but this is ridiculous!
  • Zenni's
I just got two pairs of glasses from Zenni. They arrived within 10 days and the prescriptions are spot on. I ordered the extra thin lenses and they email me that I didn't need these and they were crediting my accoutn $37. I have been paying an extra $70 for the ultra thin lenses at the brick and morter store for years because according to them the lenses would be really thick without the upgrade. Well, guess what the regular Zenni lenses were thinner than the more expenses lenses from the brick and morter store.
  • Tim
If your optician or optomotrist will not give you the PD you should file a complaint with your state's licensing board. Medcial records are yours, not the doctor's. I would also recommend you find a new eye doctor.
  • Zenni Optical
I took 2 months to get my 3 pair of glasses. Customer service was horrible. Most times I couldn't get to a human on the phone. When I did, 2 or 3 times the person was extremely rude and full of excuses about the glasses being in their lab in China.

When they arrived, I was disappointed with the quality. Lenses were very thick, transitions lenses didn't go clear or dark, just stayed medium. One pair had a lense popped out when I opened the envelope. The cheapest pair of the 3 are the most satisfactory.

Zenni is very slow, very rude and very low quality, but I suppose I got what I paid for. Cheap.
  • Replacement lenses
Is there a Zenni type business that replaces the lenses in your present frames.
  • glasses
my optician will not give me all the prescription inf i need to get glasses else where. namely the pupillary distance measurement. I a prescription I thought was complete but when I tried to buy a back up pair some where else i could not complet the transaction for lack of the pd measure.
My Doctors office refused to give it to me, therefore locking me into buying glasses at outrageous prices at their office only.
  • Zennies
What is the web site to learn about zennies?
  • Zenni Optical
    Clark
I heard your broadcast about Zenni Optical 2 days before my eye exam.

My new glasses with new frames would have cost me over $800, while my Zenni's cost me around $100.

At that rate, I could have replaced the Zenni's numerous times.

I think they are great and have recommended Zenni. to many of my friends and family members.

    Thanks for the heads up.
  • on my previous post.
FYI, pupillary distance- PD. Most optometrists will not list this on your prescription. It is yours, ask for it. Using Zenni Optical, you need to know what sizing in MM's. Measure your current eyeware and make the choice depending upon what you want. So easy to do. Take advantage of the savings.
  • Zenni Optical
One night I happened to turn to your program on my FM dial. Heard mention of eyewear starting at $8. I was a bit wary. I went to there website, did some research and though I would try them out. I received three pairs of different styles within 10 days at a total delivered cost of $56. They are amazing. I can now change my eyeware as I would my socks. Excellent quality, fashion appropriate. I have previously spent $2-300 dollars for a pair of glasses. My most expensive pair was under $15 and they are the most fashionable and stylish I have ever owned. Thanks for the tip. Saved me tons of money and I will order from them again to have styles that fit my mood. I am telling everyone I can about Zenni Optical and your show. Thanks again!
  • Zenni Optical
I spent $498.00 on glasses at a popular brick and motar place. I got better glasses from Zenni with more optios, for $89.00. They are great. The $498.00 are sitting in my glove compartment, haven't worn them since I got my Zennies.
  • Cheap Glasses Better for Your Health?
I am ordering glasses from Zenni right now. It has been 12 years since I have gotten new glasses or lenses. That's right - 12! That last pair was VERY expensive and did NOT hold up well right from the start. My very fragile glasses have been repaired with parts from other old glasses MANY times. (I wear contacts otherwise I would have been in trouble long ago.) Point is: cheap glasses are actually better for people's heath. Why? The whole reason I neglected my eye heath was cost. I have VERY poor eyesight and just my lenses start at $160 without frames! If one $50 pair from Zenni lasts me a year - (and I feel confident it will) I am ahead of the game! My husband's glasses are held together with rubber tubing so he gets a new pair too! New pair for him and 2 pairs for me (1 backup) means these wreatched things can go in the trash, and my eyes will thank me!
  • Zenni Optical
When I told my Eye doctor about ordering on line Progressive lens the concern came up about the PD, and the height of the progressive lens (Bi-focal). How did you deal with these different issues?
Note my eye doctor did seem to have a problem with ordering reading glasses.
    Thanks in advance.

  • ZENNI
Clark it seems that there are many many many complaints all over the web about zenni. I hope you reconsider you endorsement of this horrible company. Sometimes cheaper is not better or safe for that matter.
  • Great Affordable Glasses!
My husband learned about Zenni Optical from your show and I have to tell you, they are awesome! I got my first pair from them today! They are light-weight, anti-glare, scratch coated, half rim style with UV protection, and they came with a polarized sunglass Clip-on for $21.85 including shipping. It was incredible. They came today, 2 weeks after I ordered and I LOVE THESE glasses! Even more I love the price! Great Find Clark Howard!
  • zennioptical
All I know is that within 3 months of buying these glasses, they have chipped on both sides - this has never happened to me before in 20+ years. Customer service does not care but I will try corporate headquarters.
