Oct 23, 2007 -- Clark gets his long-coveted natural gas vehicle

Last winter, Clark first started talking about natural-gas vehicles (NGV). He loves them because they don't pollute the air and they use domestically produced fuel. His wife encouraged him to get one, so he searched on the Internet and a found used 2007 Honda Civic GX. Clark admits that this could either be a really dumb purchase or a really smart one. Honda is making about 400,000 of these cars per year, but they're only for sale in California and New York. The cost is about $25,000 for an NGV versus about $17,500 for a standard Civic. One of Clark's challenges in having an NGV is finding a place to fill it up with specially compressed natural gas. There are a lot of filling stations on the West Coast and on the Eastern seaboard down through Richmond, Virginia. But in the Atlanta area there's only one single station in a more than 200 mile radius! Luckily that station is about seven miles from Clark's home. Clark believes that as a nation we need to start thinking outside of the box about our energy needs. Relying on foreign energy suppliers who want to harm us can only weaken our nation. Clark's Honda GX is his answer to this dilemma. What's yours?

What others are saying

  • Civic GX
They only make about a thousand (not 400,000) per year. Honda says they are bumping up production to 1500-2000 for the 2009 model year. They are great cars. My fuel cost per mile is 2-3¢ in mine. CNGUtah dot com has a lot of helpful advice and links and a lot of them for sale.
  • NGV fueling stations in North Atlanta?
I heard College Park is getting a NGVC fueling station. I would like to buy a NGV but its the same old problem.

When are they going to put NGV fueling stations in the North Atlanta area? Who operates them in the Atl area?
  • CNG
CNG is a fossil fuels and will continue to add CO2 to the atmosphere. The BIG OIL ads on TV say that it costs 40% less than gas but what they don't tell you is that if America starts using it to a large extent then supplies will be challenged at prices will rise.
We have the technology to produce ethanol from cellulose. This is a renewable fuel, American made and will not add more CO2 to the atmosphere. We desperately need to stop the billions of dollars leaving our borders to purchase fossil fuels and cellulosic ethanol is the answer.
  • CNG Storage
A high school acquaintance of mine had several oil and natural gas wells here in southwest Oklahoma. He decided that if he got some high pressure oxygen storage bottles, he could fuel his car and pickup truck with this free fuel. No one knows exactly what happened, but a bottle exploded and there was hardly enough left of him to bury. I don't know if the bottle was pressure tested
at 5 year interval (as required for oxygen storage) or not. It is also unknown how much pressure he was putting into the bottle. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME, KIDS.
  • Natural Gas Auto - Honda Civic
Looking online, I found CNGOutfitters.com and there is a location in Roswell,GA and another in Athens,GA and still another in Chattanooga,TN to get fuel. This is encouraging, however, Honda only makes this car for California and New York distribution. I have contacts in NY and plan to purchase one.
  • Natural Gas Vehicle
CNG must be compressed to 2,000 to 3,000 psi. My garage Sears air compressor struggles to compress air to 100psi. So a LOT of pressure is required! The Phill unit at $3,000 to $4,000 does this in the home for you. It takes 4 hours to compress 100 miles worth of CNG.
  • Natural Gas Vehicle
My source article was written in June'08 when gasoline was $4.00 per gallon. Natural gas was $.85 per gallon gasoline equivalent in Utah, and as high as $2.25 per G.G.E. in other states.
  • e-fuel
I believe that compressed natural gas offers the best interim measure against the high cost of fuel.
Problem is the auto makers aren't interested, because of so few NG filling stations. The natural gas providers aren't interested because
there are so few CNG cars.
  • natural gas civic
how much does the civic cost too fill up nad how many miles on a tank of fuel do you get
  • Honda GX filling station
Clark, you need to look into the PHILL home filling station that you install in your garage. About 4K and uses the natural gas line that comes into your home.
  • a gassy way to go
NG is a great way to get around, I wish it were more common(I bet you do too). For some reason the popular misconception is that everclear aka ethanol os a great alternative fuel, but it's going to raise the price of food. NG is plentiful (isn't that the same as methane?)There's so of that coming out of DC we could run our cars for free forever!
