Aug 31, 2007 -- The best and worst credit cards in America

Have you ever wondered about the best credit card in the country? The October issue of Consumer Reports turned its attention to a survey of this all-important industry. The single best card to have in your wallet is USAA Federal Savings Bank of San Antonio's MasterCard. This card is exclusively for members of the military, their families and in some cases certain retirees. This little piece of plastic was singled out because of its reasonable interest rates and cash back earnings. USAA also delivers the best focus on customers and problem resolution, according to the report. But what about a good card for those of us who aren't in the military? A card issued by Navy Federal Credit Union came in second, while cards issues by credit unions in general took third place. Credit unions offer their cardholders good problem resolution and better interest rates than a typical bank-issued card. Overall, the only big issuers who got decent scores were American Express and Discover. The other major companies, meanwhile, were in the toilet. Providian was named the single worst card issuer. Following right behind at the bottom were Capital One, Bank of America's MBNA division and JP Morgan Chase.

  • Care Credit by GE
Someone mentioned CareCredit. They offered you zero percent with "Deferred" interest but if you dont pay it off in 18 months, they charge you 24 percent back to the orginal date of purchase. Saw that in the fine print and need to pay them $1200 by 2/2/10 to avoid this. Sorry for the people that this happens to.
  • Ditto Ditto Chase Sucks!
The card in question was originally opened with Washington Mutual. Loved doing business with them. However, when they went under it became a Chase Card. After Chase stripped my card of all its benefits for no reason, I decided to stop using the card except a couple times a year just to keep the account open, to prevent a closed account from hurting my credit score.

Well just got a letter today saying the card hasn't been used for "an extended period" and is now closed. That's it, no warning, no friendly reminder to use the card or it will be closed, nothing. It's only been five months since I last used the card. I called and tried to have the account reopened and of course the service rep said no. I told her how terrible a company Chase is and how I would never do business with them again. She didn't seem phased at all. This must happen on an hourly basis at Chase.

Bottom line Chase sucks! Please boycott them at all costs. Let's put the bums out of business! I miss WAMU!
  • credit card
are there any credit cards out there that don't charge to transfer a balance and that offer 0% interest rates for 12 mos? i need to find one fast!!
  • Ditto Chase Card Sucks
After years of being a loyal JPMorganChase customer at a fairly low fixed credit card rate, Chase unilaterally changed the terms to a variable rate that more than doubled. After threatening them in writing that I would default if they didn't change it back and close all accounts I had with them & tell all my friends in my small community; they did indeed changed it back and I have been desparately trying to pay it off as quickly as I can($10,000 left). Now just last week, I hear their CEO just ran off with 29 Billion dollars in bonus' after I helped bail this bank out (TARP $); I'm seriously considering writing Chase and demanding a 0% interest rate on this customer closed credit card, until I get this debt paid off. I will suggest that they get it from their CEO and charge this account off as my BAIL OUT.
  • Citi Bank Credit Cards TERRIBLE
After years of being a loyal customer, and never being late with a payment, paying more in most cases, we received a letter this week from Citi stating our interest is going up to 29.99% effective 11/30/09. I just got off the phone with customer service, called to ask the why. The rep said it was a bank decision and there was nothing she could do. I told her that's a great way to lose customers and my cancelation letter will be forthcoming. That is NOT the way to treat customers who are honest and pay their bills. I'm telling everyone one I can to drop these jerks.
  • USAA is great. Bank of America BADDD
I am in full agreement that USAA is great service and great rates. Bank of America has nearly two times the rate of my USAA account, and aren't budging on rates. I'm going to pay it off and move entirely to USAA for everything. Already set up a checking and savings, auto loan, mortgage, and am getting started on their tax deferred annuity products. Bank of America is paying the cost by losing my business. They won't realize how much they lost in aggregate by all the folks like me leaving them for better service and rates with USAA
  • Chase Cards Suck
My Chase card more than doubled my minimum payment! I payed 140 last month, and this month its over 300 due! I called them and they did nothing. I canceled my card, and told them I would never do business with them again. They seemed unphased.
  • Capital One Scam
Went to use capital one points to pay for air travel, they have these point ranges, a way for them to pay back a lower amonuts than advertised. For example had a $1,350 air fare, had 91,400 points. The way they advertise you would think I would get $914 off that ticket, problaem is its only at 50% so I only get back $457. I'll pay off this month and stop using the card. Just another scam, stay away from Capital One.
  • simmons first platinum 7.9% fixed rate card
i've never made a late payment on a credit card. i applied for and recieved a simmons first 7.9% platinum fixed rate card. about 30 days after receiving it they sent a credit disclosure downgrading the card to a 7.25%
    VARIABLE rate card.
  • Chase doesn't investigate fraud attempts
I applied for a Chase Rewards MC, and I got the card in the mail a week later. When I called to activate the card, they re-routed me to the fraud department. The representative said there had been an attempt to use my credit card number in an online purchase, but since the card hadn't been activated yet the purchase attempt was rejected. Here are the problems/issues I had with this incident:

#1. The attempt to use my card had been made 5 days before it arrived in the mail. Chase NEVER called me about the fraud attempt, but only mentioned it to me when I called them to activate my card.

#2. They acted like it was no big deal since the fraud attempt had failed, and seemed annoyed that I asked for a new account number.

#3. I did get a new account number but I'm actually afraid to activate the new card. I'll probably close the account, but ironically it could end up hurting my credit score to close the account.

#4. This fraud attempt happened After they gave me an account, but Before I ever got the card, so how did they get my account number?

#5. Chase did NOTHING to investigate this. At first they said they would, but every time I called back there was no record in the system that indicated they were checking into this. Now there's not even a record in their system that the problem existed in the first place.

#6. If this is how they handle fraud and/or fraud attempts, can I trust them to properly deal with any future fraud attempt on my account? (easy answer: NO!)
  • Walmart Credit Card
My Walmart credit card I purchased a TV. I paid it off. That interest rate was 23%. I called to have it lowered after paying it off, and was denied. Also I have a SB1 federal credit card, and its 12%. What do I do with the Walmart credit card at 23%. This is so sad. I have a 700 credit scored, but they noticed a bankruptcy I'm sure. However, they see I did pay them off. What must I do please?
  • Capital One
Been using my Capital One credit card for past 2 years WAS very happy with them until my interest rate went from 5.99% to 15.99%! I have never made a late payment; never gone over my credit limit and always paid more than the miniumum payment. I called, talked to the "special desk" (I think they are special because they have a list of excuses about how many ways that they don't care about you as a customer). I was advised I was not the only one they raised the interest on...they did it to over 11 million of their customers!!! WOW, I better go buy some Capital One stock. Am currently surchasing for a new credit card and am being diligent at trying to pay off my balance and being rid of ALL credit card companies!!
  • American Express cut limit without explanation or telling me
Amex cut my credit limit from $15K down to $3K without telling me this month citing Experian as a reason. I reviewed my credit history on Experian immediately, but there are no derogatory items or lates, and a credit score above 700 as it should be. Never a late payment or over the limit, always paid more than minimum. After doing more investigation online and talking to another friend who used Amex for business for the past 6 years, the same thing happened to him recently rendering his Amex useless as a business tool and putting him in a bad predicament. I will be closing my Amex account shortly due to this egregious Corporate behavior to good customers in good standing. I would love for Clark to spread the word about this as it is becoming more widespread (as revealed in my searches online) and could truly hurt a lot of honest Americans without any warning.
  • Navy Federal open only to Military, Retiriess and DOD employees
I just called the Navy Federal Credit Union. You can only get membership if you are currently in the military, retired from the military or are a DOD employee/civilian contractor.
  • Citi Bank CC interest hike in one month
Had Citi cards for many years. Within several months the rate went from 7.99 to 11.99 to 25.99%. I am very angry now. They even raised my limit at the same time...all the way to 25K.
  • Chase had 3.99% for the life of the loan
Chase had 3.99% for the life of the loan and they stuck with it and have never changed the rate. I'm still with them and careful to never use that card.
  • GM Flex card was good until the rate expired !!
My GM Flex card was good until rate expired !! I had 0% for 12 months !! They were going to raise my rate to 14%.
Not me !! Goodbye GM. Hello Wells Fargo
  • Wells fargo offering 5/9% 3% balance transfer
Wells Fargo is offering 5.9% for 12 mo. and a 3% balance transfer but the max fee is $99 !!!
  • Farm Bureau Bank
I have alway been happy with my FBB VISA. Great service, and a straight forward 1% cash back. Tried a few others which offered x% on certain purchases and thier numbers never seemed to track with mine. Not sure what the rate is on my card, but if you don't carry a balance who cares :)
  • Credit Cards - Product for a Price
I see a few "we need to regulate these evil companies!"

Actually, these companies are delivering quite an amazing service, and if you pay off your debt you owe them, there is no interest and often no annual fee. That's pretty amazing.

Those who borrow money and get into debt and can't pay these cards off - these companies know how many will go bankrupt, drop out of their payments altogether, etc... That costs them a ton of money and their rates reflect what it costs to cover all these losses - massive losses - not to mention theft - huge!

Oh, and they are also in the business to make money, that's what they are there to do.

Instead of regulation, just take your business elsewhere, or don't borrow money you don't have. Now that is advice I believe would subscribe to completely!

Buyer beware - it's really that simple.
  • Advanta
I have an Advanta card that I transfered a balance to. Made the mistake of using the card as well. The purchases rate went from 7.99% to 20.99% over night with no late payments.
I guess I will let them keep the transfer balance at the 0% interest until it runs the term and then I gone.
I see alot of similar comments reguarding there behavior. Hope they go the way of the economy, DOWN
  • Advanta Credit Cards Rip-Off!
Advanta Credit Cards lured me in with great teaser rates, thenwithout telling me slowly increase their interest rates to over 36%!
I am a small business owner and was not late or over limit, they just stiick it to you hoping you never question the rate increases.
Thay have recently gone into my personal checking account and withdrawn electronic funds without my authorization or approval!
    These people should be ashamed.
  • CareCredit
Has there been any complaints about Care Credit? Somehow my one year deferred interest was cut to six months and now I have a hefty interest amount. I have paid regular/on time payments since 07/2008. Now they're charging me 21.98% interest. What can I do?
  • Credit Card Interest
Denise if you Don't Carry A Balance, It Doesn't Matter What The Interest Rate Is. Chase Pays Me To Use My Card. (5% on Gas etc.)
  • Capital One
I also am going to close my Capital One account - I have never made a late payment and they jacked my interest rate 11%!! When contacted they could give no specific reason for the hike other than "the economic situation" and would not negotiate. The banks have entirely too much power. We, the consumers on the other hand, have absolutely no recourse other than to close our accounts - which does not seem to make any difference to them. We drastically need some legislation to reign these sharks in!
  • Credit Card Ratings
In rating credit cards, Consumer Report apparently gave Discover a "decent score" however I want to make it known that they are one of the companies that just lowered their customers' credit limits "across the board" and are telling customers it was a "business decision." I have had their card for years, have always paind my bill on time and without any notice found out when I received my last statement that my credit limit had been lowered. This has a negative impact on your credit score because it decreases the percent of the credit you are using. When called, the company just said it was "across the board" and a "business decision." They certainly do not deserve a "decent" rating...
  • American Express life insurance - bad 4 me
I have had it for years. They cganged the name to River source last year but all letters come from Amer Exp. I just recieved a letter stating the pmt of $29 they invoice me for every month did not cover the amt due. I had to pay $89.92 in 1 month to catch up or my policy may lapse. As I am now 66 and have med prob. I cannot get ins anywhere else so I have to pay it. I sent the pmt regestered return recp. so I they cant say they didnt get it. 92 cents would take 8 months to add up to $89. I think they are not only trying to reduce credit card debt, they are also trying to cut payouts elsewhere. That, or the have very shaky bookeeping methods. I would not recomend American Express to anyone. This is not the first bad experiance I had with them, but it is the last.
  • Capital One wants to make a deal?!?
Received notice today that interest on our Capital One account (balance of which we pay in full each month) is going from 9.9% to 17.9%. After much time on hold and speaking to a supervisor, it was suggested that we shop around, find a better rate, then come back to them and they would "match" it so that we could stay with Capital One.

I told them, "Nope. Whoever offers that better rate, gets the business." No way am I going to play that game.
  • Capital One
Capital seems to be the hot topic on this forum. They are also jacking up my rate by 6%. I called them and complained as I have never made a late payment, nor have I went over my credit limit. I am now in search of a card with a better rate so that I can close my Capital One account. I too am another customer that they have lost!
  • Credit Cards
Available credit is sweet! Credit balances not so much. I have great credit and need a card with GOOD cash back offers. Dont sent me anything with a yearly fee; that is a rip off. You are charging me interest; I am not paying you to charge me.

    Thanks,
  • Providian
The worst rip off is Providian. I have had a card with them for years, and suddenly, due to the economy, they raised my interest rate to 30%! I have always paid on time and more than the minimum, yet they just arbitrarily jacked my rate up with no regard for my payment record. The banks are out of control and are making it almost impossible for consumers with good payment histories to continue to pay things off! Something needs to be done. It's criminal.
  • Capital One
I was at 5% interest, paid usually at least double what was due, (trying to make it go away) and now because I have a low balance have charged only a few times this year to buy my sons books for college. They are raising my rate to 15.9%... They have lost me to. Back to the credit union I go. Apparently the only customers they want are maxed out minimum payment people, until they default. with no job
  • Capital One 4.99% fixed NO HASSLE
Yeah no hassle alright. I have been with them for 8 years and have 2 MMI's and one CD. They just raised my rate to 13.9% with no negotiation. They just lost another good customer.
  • Capital One
Anytime you want to make a payment, it takes them about a week and half to clear the money from your account. What kind of place doesn't want their money right away?
  • Capital One 9.9% locked for life B>S>
Opened account 12 years ago said 9.9% locked for life.I have no late payments and an excelent credit rating. I just got notice that they are raising my rates to 17.9% variable due to the "economic environment". No other explaination and no negotiation. They just lost me as a customer.
  • Capital One former customer
I tried that old trick, calling Capital One to say a competitor offered a lower annual interest rate, could they improve theirs for me? Capital One said it was "out of the question" and, BTW, Capital One is planning to jack up everybody's interest rate to 17% soon, they said. Luckily, I was not bluffing, Discover offered me 3.99% to get a card and transfer my balance. Which I did after ending my call with Capital One
  • Capital One belongs at the bottom
Seven months ago the offered me %0 for six months and 7.9% after that. I have no late payments and an excelent credit rating. I just got notice that they are raising my rates to 17.9% variable due to the "economic environment". No other explaination and no negotiation. They just lost me as a customer.
  • Midwest Express Card by Juniper
Don't EVER get a card by Juniper and Midwest Express. Their HORRIBLE customer service time and time again was enough for me to put their card in the shreader.
  • Advanta is a predatory, bilking slime monster
I have been using an Advanta Platinum MasterCard for my personal business for many years now, and have a flawless payment history with them.

Back in May I came down with a sudden case of divorce and moved across country. While my household income no longer includes my adulterous husband’s income, I am gainfully self-employed, making enough income to cover my expenses and remain current on all of my debts.

I recently received notice from Advanta that the interest rate on my account has suddenly jumped to 32.59%. When I called customer service, I was told the rate increased because I was determined to be “at risk for default”, even though I have never been late for or missed any payments in my entire history with Advanta, or my other creditors, and I still have an excellent credit score.

If I had missed or even been delinquent on any of my payments, I might have understood this policy. But I find this pre-emptive attack by Advanta to be predatory and blatant usury. And bilking a newly single mom who is recovering from a divorce is just plain cold, insensitive cruelty. I will be paying off my Advanta card and closing the account ASAP.
  • Advanta MC card
I too have been ripped off by Advanta. This last statement the rate is at 27.18% with cash advances at 37.18%. These people need to go away. I have never made a payment less than $1000, always on time, and have a decent credit history. Is there any recourse here, I have stopped using it and need to get them out of my life. I, embarrassingly owe $16k.
  • American Express finally sticks it to me!
I just spent 63 minutes on the phone with American Express (most of the time on hold) trying to get someone to explain why 1) they lowered my credit limit and 2) why they raised my interest rate by 3%.

I was told that my credit limit was being decreased because I wasn't making large enough payments. For the past five months, my minimum payments totaled $829 while my payments totaled $1200. The customer service rep I spoke with, Kimone, informed me that the amount I paid was not enough to prevent my credit limit from being lowered. When I asked how much was enough to keep it from being decreased, she told me she didn't know but that "the customer is supposed to know to pay more." I fail to see the logic.

After having the second customer service rep, Darnell, keep me on hold for over 30 minutes in order to verify that American Express was raising my interest rate, he then transferred me to the third rep, Shanaine, who when asked why my interest rate was being raised replied "it's hard to say." World class customer service!

I must say I have been an American Express card holder for over 6 years and have NEVER had one problem. It's sad that they have decided to make the "little guy" pay for other's financial mistakes. I plan on taking out a personal loan and paying off this account (the same as I did with Discover - at a much lower interest rate).
  • Unjust closing of Account
I feel they were unjust because I had NO plans to avoid exceeding the limit.
  • advanta
we have 955 credit...payed Advanta one late (3 days) and rate jumped to 26.31. Closed the account!
  • Starwood Amex is great
I agree the Starwood Amex is a great deal for hotel points and miles. It is the best miles credit card out there. Learned about it at http://www.milecards.com/
  • USAA Rocks!
I have to say that without a doubt, not only is the USAA MasterCard the best credit card deal out there - the incredible customer service USAA staff provides across all of their products is absolutely second to none! Along with a credit card account, we moved our checking/savings accounts to USAA (after 10+ years with BofA), and have our cars insured through USAA. If they begin writing new homeowners policies in FL in the future, they'll probably gain that business as well. Customer service does count!
  • Best Credit Card
Trying to find out which one of American Express' credit cards are the best for earning airline travel rewards. Is it the Sky Miles or the Blue Card
  • Advanta....what a rip-off!
My husband and I HAD an Advanta Platinum BusinessCard until today! Our interest rate has suddenly jumped from 7.99 to 25.08, and we have excellent credit. When we asked them to explain why this happened, they can only say that the decision was based on several factors and won't tell us why. We had to pay a $189.79 fee to our other credit card company to get a balance transfer done, but I will never do business with Advanta again. BEWARE...they obviously are having serious problems.
  • Best points credit card
I am looking for a credit card with 5 points per dollar spent. Do you know of any. Thanks for all your great info and help
  • Advanta MC tripled rate for no reason
Advanta Small Bus Master Card raised my rate from 7.9% to 24.9% and would not tell me why? My Credit score is above 700 & no missed payments. I would steer clear of them.
  • American Express
I pay my balance each month and want to earn hotel points.
American Express has a Starwood Hotels card that seems like a good deal.
  • Best Credit Card
What is the best credit card for airline miles if you pay off the balance each month? I do know Chase's Priority Club Visa offers no annual fee and you get hotel stays.
  • roth ira
how do i get started at 52
  • Credit card interest
While trying to have mail sent to Fla. during the winter months I missed my credit card payment. I was having my family send my mail. I owed a little over $200.00 on a Chase card. Ocfcourse I got hit with a late fee and now they have raised my interest rate to allmost 30%. Now I got my GM card and they too have raised my interest rate to almost 30% Is there anything I can do?

Ofcourse I paid the $200.00 balance and asked to have my interest rate lowered and they told me nope, nothing else was available and I told them to close the card then. What can I do? I don't care about the Chase card now, although I did have a large amount of credit because it was a business card that I had for years. Any suggestions?
  • Credit cards
    Clark,
My husband and I have a credit card from our local credit union. I want my own credit card, can I get a seperate one from the same credit union just in my name. I would use if for my business travel expenses only and pay off monthly. My husband charges his gasoline on our joint card and pays off every month also. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
