Aug 24, 2007 -- Phone companies charging fees to not use long distance

Do you need yet another reason to dump the three monopoly phone companies -- Verizon, AT&T and Qwest -- and their outdated landlines? Well, here it is: Verizon is playing dirty pool by getting into the AT&T game of charging customers a fee for long distance even if you don't use long distance. The Verizon fee is a couple of bucks a month, but AT&T had been charging people between three and five dollars to not use long distance! So unless you absolutely need a landline, why not liberate yourself? Here's the problem the phone companies are facing: They fought very hard to be able to sell long distance, but then people started using their cell phones, pre-paid cards, the Internet and/or cable phone companies to make their long distance calls. In fact, the cable companies usually offer unlimited long distance. So now the monopoly phone companies are fighting a losing battle.

Clark advises anyone who has older parents to go through their phone bill and see if you can save them money by enrolling them in Lifeline, which is a much more affordable tariff-rated service that seniors can get. Also be aware that if your parents have been in same residence since the early '80s, they may be paying a lease for telephones they had back then. Those fees could cumulatively amount to thousands of dollars, so be on the lookout on your folks' behalf. Finally, one last tip for saving money when it comes to your landline: If you pay for an unlisted number, why not just change it to a listed number and make up the name in the listing? Clark doesn't care if you call yourself Abraham Lincoln, the point is just to stop paying extra and unnecessary fees!

    I got to looking at my phone bill after reading your scam alert on your website and i get charged each month $7.95 a month for long distant and i also get charged for local to . I have Verizon and i think they area very very poor phone company as far as i am concerned . If it wasn't for having to have them so i can use th einternet because i live in a rural area and it cost so much to get wireless here that almost all the people have dial up in this town . I do have a cell phone and have had for about 12 years now i use it always for my long distant calls . Keep up the good work. P.S I have lived in this house 32 Years and have had them every since they came about.

    Excuse me Clark but why are you suggesting people look at their parents phone bills who are seniors. Don't you think we can handle our own bills. I am 69 and still work full time and I help my children, they don't help me. I would like to know how I go about getting the lower rate phone service you mentioned on your show last week. What is the website I need to look on your the phone # to call? I don't see anything on my phone bill about Lifeline or tariff-rated service. Thank you.

    I requested this discount from AT&T in Georgia. I was told it was a flat $13.95 discount for senior citizens. What they didn't mention was that you must be on one of 7 public assistance programs. I didn't learn this until they sent out the paperwork.

    3. Temporary aid to Needy families
    4. Federal public housing/section *
    5. Supplemental security income
    6. Food stamps
    7. Senior citizen low income discount plan offered by the local gas or power company
  • Dumping AT&T in favour of another phone company
    I am having problem with AT&T, can you suggest another phone company I can use instead of AT&T
    I have a blood clot and need a landline for emergency, such as calling the Hospital Emergency Department.
